He does process pretty well... most of the time.. until he boxes himself into a panic move. His skating isn't good enough for sure though... I think we owe him one more year, or part of a year, to see what he can do for us, and I hate giving up on D too soon. Maybe then consider a move... perhaps someone will be looking to move a heavier D, with better skating, and defense, where we could afford to give up the offense. Probably a Right hander, seeing as we are short of those.

His straight-line speed needs work, but it is hardly bad enough to keep him from the NHL as an effective two-way defenseman. It is not like guys are blowing past him on the rush; he loses foot races, and even then it is usually against guys who beat a lot of defensemen in foot races.

The rest of his skating (agility especially) is very good, his offensive IQ is arguably top 4 level right now, and his defensive IQ is also good but I think he needs more time to translate what he is thinking to action (which he needed another half season in the AHL).

He is a full time NHL player right now, and within a season or two, should be top 4 caliber too.

Oh, that one example of a guy, who didn't improve his speed, when you have no idea what his training was?

Please.

I've coached track and field for 30 years, and studied speed mechanics and training. You can absolutely improve speed, jumping etc, on anybody. Everyone has their natural range of performance capabilities though..
Okay. So can Sandin improves enough of his speed where he is no longer an liability on the ice with his footspeed where he constantly getting outskated by opposing 4th liners?

Great player and I'm glad he's back, but I wish it was a longer deal. This was a prime chance to lock up a quality defender to a relatively cheap deal

If things are like last season, then Dubas has locked in our 2nd pairing on defense for 1.4 + 800k for 2 more seasons. Unreal.
I know it's Dubas so the bar is set ankle high and i think Lilly has potential for future growth but what did you expect a 23 year old bottom pairing D who has played less than 80 games and was in and out of the lineup to sign for ?

I've already answered this. You have to know what speed training he's had, to know... if he's had none, or little, yes, he can improve.. but to what degree varies from person to person. We are dealing with pretty small margins of improvement needed though. If he's already trained his max, then no... but we don't know what training he does, to really know to what degree he can improve.

It's not the speed, as much as using explosive power the first few steps for acceleration... (which incidentally, would help top speed some too)... But acceleration improves positioning, which is ultra critical in defending.

The point of my post was he got Gio who was rumored to get 3-4 million and Lilly, who the main boards have said was an offersheet target ~4M both for 2M combined. It's great value for our defense. That's my point.

Good amount and happy to have him locked in for a step higher than one season.

Gio gave a us break because he wanted to come home and finish his career here , it had nothing to do with Dubie's prowess in negotiating contracts.

Lilly's deal was fair for both sides considering he is 23 , played less than 80 games , plays on the bottom line and was in and out of the lineup all season/playoffs.

So when he gets a player to take less, it's because they wanted to. When a player takes more, it's not because they wanted to it's on Dubas.

Or we can accept it takes two to make a deal, and Gio and Lilly both knew they are not Matthews or Marner?

beat out by Lyubushkin and couldn’t even play him in the playoffs regularly.

You believe Dubas negotiated Giordano down to 800k?

enjoy Dubie while you can since this will be his last season

I don't like to say it is acceleration because I do not think he has much of an issue getting moving in short bursts. If he has to go from stop to start in his own end, I don't think he has much of an issue getting going.

It is the straight-line part that sucks, like the Byron goal, and I guess it is true that it is more of his acceleration than his top speed (because it is rare to see a defenseman really get up to top speed unless they are going end-to-end).

That is at least more correctable than most things. Rather that than a guy who doesn't have the processing ability. You can fix skating. You can't fix processing ability.

Now sign a blueliner who is nasty & hard to play against.
Honestly, I'm fine with Lyubushkin not coming back. He was a defenseman who hit people hard but didn't have the "Nasty" or "Mean streak" the leafs need.

Gubrandson, Luke Schenn, Chiarot, etc....are the type of defenseman the leafs need.

I think Dubas was fair with him. I think he was respectful, I think he told him what the team could do, what they thought he was worth, and where they thought he would fit. I think as a player, he respected Dubas for being upfront and not being insulting with an offer. I think Dubas building a team that finished with franchise records had an impact on Gio's decision to take less to sign with a team he thought could win some rounds.

Similarly, Lou's negotiation tactics of being insulting left bad tastes in the mouths of several core players that Dubas had to repair relationships with. For example, Marner was hurt Lou didn't view him as a franchise piece and cost him millions in bonuses he hit after refusing to give them. It resulted in Marner wanting to take every penny, after being told "it's a business" from Lou after being bent over.

So I think Dubas learned from that, and negotiates from a position of 'this is what we can do, this is what we can offer you aside from money' and it has worked well for him. Like everything, it was not in a vacuum. I would trust Dubas to re-negotiate the cores contracts again. He's learned a lot and managed to find ways to get players to take less.

yea that's it . lol

Hope not, would be the biggest mistake the franchise has made in some time. But I am sure you will be happy to hire more Burkes and Nonis types to overpay David Clarksons in the name of grit
