Seems reasonable, pretty much what was expected. Those projections of 3 - 4 million a year were a little out of whack.

Folks around here tend to overestimate the bargaining power of non-star RFAS, especially those without arbitration rights. I remember people on the last Mik contract were thinking he was going to get like 3.5 mil too. And clearly his agent wasn't expecting any type of offersheet that could be used to gain leverage with the team.

Short term deal works out for both sides

He does process pretty well... most of the time.. until he boxes himself into a panic move. His skating isn't good enough for sure though... I think we owe him one more year, or part of a year, to see what he can do for us, and I hate giving up on D too soon. Maybe then consider a move... perhaps someone will be looking to move a heavier D, with better skating, and defense, where we could afford to give up the offense. Probably a Right hander, seeing as we are short of those.

We should keep in mind Sandin has 1 year of NHL experience, including playoffs 93 games.

That he's been around so long is due to his European draft.

Used to be expected that it took a couple hundred games for NHL defenders to get comfortable.

I thought dubas only overpaid players…. Huh

It is 100% affordable given he likely wouldn't exceed a number in the high 3s LT.

If you don't take these risks you'll never get an Ellis/Kadri/etc. sweetheart contract and always pay full value. This is the only recent RFA i'm confident enough in to jump the gun.

Anyways, interested to see if Sandin also gets 2yr. Will make for an insanely busy summer dealing with Matthews, Nylander, Liljegren, and Sandin right after Bunting.
He’s probably be looking at Rasmus Andersson in Calgary as a benchmark so I’d guess it would’ve been 25m+ over 6 years so 4+ aav

Lou Lam drafted Liljegren, and Dubas drafted Sandin, so now we know how much RFA money Lil received and curious to see where Ramsus comes in to see which one of the young dmen Leafs value more.

I kind of see them as fairly close in level and contracts should come in similar.

You know what is funny, is all the talk we used to get here about "Barb will make him a better skater."

I do think he processes better than some higher paid players on the defense.
When I started watching him live day-to-day with Marlies I got fooled at start .. his hands and brain are ridiculous .. he can make plays with his hands that make you shake your head .. but as game sped up in 2nd round of playoffs his passes got intercepted, he was a turnover machine and he could not catch Canes farm team on numerous breaks even when he had lead positioning which costs Marlies da series .. bottom line he was slowest Marlie and now slowest Leaf .. and you can't teach speed .. he might become a 3rd pair NHLer with a PP specialty .. i think that is his potential

Well... you can teach some speed... and I have no idea if he's already been maxed out in that area or not. if he is... well you are absolutely right. If he hasn't maxed out training, explosive speed techniques, there is a small amount of hope. But you'd think they'd know the problem, and be attempting to address it.

They are a draft year apart, I don't think they're comparable.
If Sandin gets a 1 year deal, what he gets next year would be.

Sandin should get the same deal I think.

Sandin has only played 14 more games. Maybe he gets 1.5M lol

I don’t know about the speed part as GOAT was around for a few years and his speed didn’t really improve

I like this deal bc it is a fair market deal.
Let’s not start praising Dubas for getting a great deal when it is actually a normal deal if it is from any other teams. It is like praising your kids that they can whip their own asses when they are in their 20s.

Have a feeling the Avs will do this with Byram this summer despite being cap strapped. Same idea but different AAV obv.

Lil is a year older

2021-22
======================================
Timothy Liljegren .. D ... 61 games 5 goals 18 assists 23 points
Rasmus Sandin ...... D .. 51 games 5 goals 11 assists 16 points

I see them as similar although Liljegren did start the 1st 2 games of the playoffs, but Sandin might have been hurt,

I expect both are a part of this years plan and playing regularly in the group of 6, so I'm expecting Rasmus to get a similar type bridge deal of a couple years in a similar range .

Oh, that one example of a guy, who didn't improve his speed, when you have no idea what his training was?

Please.

I've coached track and field for 30 years, and studied speed mechanics and training. You can absolutely improve speed, jumping etc, on anybody. Everyone has their natural range of performance capabilities though..

In 2yrs:

Matthews 26: UFA
Marner 26: $10.9 x 1yrs
Nylander 27: UFA

Knies 22: RFA x 4yrs

Rielly 30: $7.5 x6yrs
Liljegren 25: RFA x2yrs

Sandin 24: RFA x2yrs
Brodie 34: UFA

Muzzin 35: UFA
Niemela 22: RFA x5yrs
