Feel like pulling my hair out listening to Hayes and o rag on this extension. They’re comparing him to bogo or EJ when he’s going to fill the Byram or girard role.
They should be posting here. Form an opinion prior to seeing a sample size large enough for it to be an educated one and then stick to it regardless of what the results on the ice show.
They'd fit right in.

20 years... Maybe I'm out of touch hahaha
Maybe I am trapped in the past but until dubas I don't recall a single vet playing here and taking a solid haircut in salary. Do you?
they didn't have to take a haircut before the cap era and we we've been crap until we tanked and drafted AM so there really was no reason for a vet to come here to chase a cup for cheap until recently

To be fair, I'd hate playing in a place where not playing up to fan expectations meant that you got harrassed. Of course, part of this list could also be the start of "the worst players to ever play for Toronto" list...

And we all know why Healy hates the Leafs; he can claim it was "lack of respect" all he wants, but the truth is he thought he should be handed the GM job in 2008 with no prior experience just because, and he's hated the Leafs for refusing ever since.

Nolan's departure from Toronto was most definitely NOT on friendly terms...
Agreed that fans can be a bit hard but I think any of the big six teams have the same rabid fan base and would venture to say some are worse like the Bruins.
Pre dubas I ca not recall players raving about our world class organization. I recall lots of "great to play for such a storied franchise" or "the greatest fans in hockey" or other comments nothing pointing to how wellthe organization is run.

The Sundin era begs to differ

I brought up Gardiner because he's a great skater but routinely got beat by 4th liners to the outside. I said that because getting beat to the outside isn't a skating issue, it's a hockey IQ issue which isn't a weakness for Sandin.
And I replied by saying Gardiner was never really considered to be a good Dman. Thus, using a bad Dman as an example is really not the best choice.

Listen, as of now, Sandin's weaknesses are his skating and size. Something that will be really hard to overcome. I think TJ is great but just could not help to think that if it was Reilly, Muz, Lub, Gio and even Lilly in his place, they could have stopped Paul when he drove to the net and scored the winning goal in Game 7 bc Paul took advantage of TJ's lack of size.

take a better look at Sundins era , we didn't qualify for the playoffs once the cap started in 05/06

I don't recall but it wouldn't surprise me. Was it because his career was over or because this was a bad place to play?
Those days they had all kids of vets join the team.

It is like that for any cities with great fans and passionate about their teams.

Personally, players just need to focus on winning instead of finding excuses. Last year, Mack gone piss about have not accomplish and won anything in the league and this year he is Cup Champs. Have we seen any Leafs players during their post series presser stating anything like they are mad and piss about have not winning anything? All I kept hearing were, we just couldn't score as we were doing everything right, we were close and the margin of errors is so small....I have not heard anyone stating, we need to be better, much better bc we have not won anything and coming close means nothing......

Fine with that. Both he and the team know that the salary cap is likely to skyrocket in a couple years once the players "pay back" the owners for the, so it makes sense for him to take a low AAV two year contract.

You started with the comparison. All I mentioned was Sandin's speed is a problem for him and the Leafs and I have not even started with his size and how he often got manhandled in front of the net.

For some reason, they really don't like Lilly. I don't understand that one bit.

They have shown time and time again that they know very little about hockey. Not much unlike the people who practically parrot them on here.

They just get paid a lot of money to talk about it.

Odog is good at intermissions and panels during games.

Why listen then?

I think Dubas was fair with him. I think he was respectful, I think he told him what the team could do, what they thought he was worth, and where they thought he would fit. I think as a player, he respected Dubas for being upfront and not being insulting with an offer. I think Dubas building a team that finished with franchise records had an impact on Gio's decision to take less to sign with a team he thought could win some rounds.

Similarly, Lou's negotiation tactics of being insulting left bad tastes in the mouths of several core players that Dubas had to repair relationships with. For example, Marner was hurt Lou didn't view him as a franchise piece and cost him millions in bonuses he hit after refusing to give them. It resulted in Marner wanting to take every penny, after being told "it's a business" from Lou after being bent over.

So I think Dubas learned from that, and negotiates from a position of 'this is what we can do, this is what we can offer you aside from money' and it has worked well for him. Like everything, it was not in a vacuum. I would trust Dubas to re-negotiate the cores contracts again. He's learned a lot and managed to find ways to get players to take less.

Hope not, would be the biggest mistake the franchise has made in some time. But I am sure you will be happy to hire more Burkes and Nonis types to overpay David Clarksons in the name of grit
I doubt many of us want to hire more Burke’s or Nonis but how about the type of GM’s that built the cup winners and recent past winners.

2013 with Kessel and we were a bubble team for years before and after but never able to get a good star to come help us get over the top. If we could have got a player to waive a nmc and agree to come play here with Phil, who knows what could have happened.
My point stands

We were a bubble team for most of the time. We were all screaming for a tank but Burke and no is kept wasting picks and grabbing crap who would then leave right after.

Dark days for sure. I think that's a big reason why people getting impatient now. They see the vast potential here that's being wasted.

Like who? Name someone available
We cannot name someone because we as fans have no way of knowing who is available but your post implies that we want a Burke or Nonis type and that is mostly untrue.
it Is a very weak argument when a poster throws out the worst possible names and then asks……..who would you pick. Again just because we are not privy to who might be a good replacement doesn’t mean that we don’t know that changes need to be made.

I get the impatience but if we look realistically at the cup winners, Mac and landeskog have been together for 9 years to get to this point and even tb Stamkos and kucherov took a similar amount of time, but yes, I'm impatient too.

Lil is a year older

2021-22
======================================
Timothy Liljegren .. D ... 61 games 5 goals 18 assists 23 points
Rasmus Sandin ...... D .. 51 games 5 goals 11 assists 16 points

I see them as similar although Liljegren did start the 1st 2 games of the playoffs, but Sandin might have been hurt,

I expect both are a part of this years plan and playing regularly in the group of 6, so I'm expecting Rasmus to get a similar type bridge deal of a couple years in a similar range .

Both Lily and Sandin are solid. But Lily has more poise playing D and breakouts. Lily also has a canon for a point shot.

Liljegren compares with Travis Dermott in terms of where they were coming out of ELC than any Gardiner comparison. The hope here is he keeps progressing and out performs the $1.4 million at some point during the contract as he keeps improving. Not like Dermott who just flatlined.

IMO I think we screwed up with Dermott. Dermott was drafted to be the puck move after Rielly

we ran with these top 4s and Dermott didn't really get a chance IMO

Rielly Hainsey
Gardiner Polak

then

Rielly Ceci
Muzzin Holl/Barrie

then

Rielly Brodie
Muzzin Holl

then

Rielly Lybushkin
Muzzin Brodie

I still think Dermott is going to be a decent D-man. With the nucks and Boudreau I think he fairs better
