The first defense provides little offense aside from Rielly

Klingberg we sacrificed defensive play for transition and in zone offense. We havent had a good #2D who can give 50 pts since Gardiner in 2018

We need/needed to upgrade on McCabe to drop him to pair 3

Rielly - Brodie
XXX - Klingberg
McCabe - Lilijgren
Gio

We need to get that 2nd pairing LHD/RHD who is able to give us 25-30 pts while being a strong in zone defensive player with some physicality
Yeah, I definitely get the idea behind the Klingberg addition, I just don't like it in practice. He's an upgrade over Rielly on PP1, but only a slight upgrade. At ES, I think he's just too weak defensively to play on the 2nd pairing, even with a strong partner. 2nd pairing dmen need to play lots of tough minutes, Klingberg is a legit trainwreck defensively, he needs to be heavily insulated and given the softest minutes possible at ES.

Would rather give up some offence to have 3 pairs of dmen that we can trust at ES. I think Liljegren is the better ES dman, by a wide margin too. Obviously not as good offensively, but Lily can still move the puck pretty well, and he's SOOOOOOOOOO much better defensively.

We need a mix I think.

Klingberg while trash defensively does have higher offensive capabilities than Lilijgren

Having lilijgren is fine though, he is on pair 2 or 3 depending on matchup/situation

We could use a 2019 Muzzin right now. #2D which lets Brodie be #3

And then Kling/Lil/McC as the 4-6 in any order.

Don't think there is anyone really available who could fill that role at the moment. Vegas has a couple of guys who could be that type of player but they are likely not on the table after their cup run and continued dominance so far early into the year.

Ekholm may be the guy if the Oilers look to sell off at the deadline. Would keep an eye on him

Having prime / good Muzzin would have solved a lot last year

Rielly-Schenn
Muzzin-Brodie as your top 4 is awesome

Since I'm always rooting for Timmy, I'll give this thread a bump.

I think Liljegren had looked solid since coming back from injury. He has 5 points in his last 5 games. The team has won 1 game and lost 4 while being outscored 23-16. Lily has been +2 over that span.

He's thrown a few hits, he's been blocking shots, and be hasn't been giving the puck away. It looks like he's gaining confidence, and that's been very important with him throughout his development.

He controls gaps well and usually has good body positioning. He's getting stronger on the boards and in front of the net. Hopefully now he continues to tap into that offensive game that has been dormant for a few years. I really expect him to continue progressing throughout the season and I look forward to witnessing it.

Another solid game. Played 22 mins just under Rielly. He's played well since coming back with a couple mishaps here and there, but last 3 or 4 he's been terrific. Back to form now.
Interesting how Keefe is using him. He's starting in the O zone a lot but also getting quite a few in the D zone too.

I thought this game was his best of the season. Solid defensively, made the right pinches, good board work, and continues to show a great shot hitting one of the many posts Leafs hit.

Lilly is a player we developed that had some injuries but the last few yrs we have witnessed how “solid” of a defenceman he can be.

When we had injuries last yr Lilly stepped up and filled a big role and played 20 mins a game.

Sure he has somethings to improve on and his skating isn’t great but he is a top four defenseman

We are lucky to have him and never understood why we would want to trade him

If we can get a 8 year 4-5 Million deal done we should probably go for it!
Ewww.

Still don’t see a reliable top 4 on a good D, to me he’s plateaued, needs to find another level of consistency and effectiveness. Has been better last couple games, but I’m still not sold on how fast he processes the game.

Not to sure 8 yrs would be the play with Liljegren. I think a 5 year term would be the max I'd gamble on him with a LTC 12 team. I think if there were some indications of him being a dominant type of Dman than yeah 8 yrs for sure.

I like him and can see him being a really excellent #5 or a very reliable #4, I don't think they're ever going to get any kind of offence out of him unfortunately. I can see him turning into a complete stay at home type who has a great first pass.

Your plan it to sign 4 or 5 D in the off season because without Lily the D is Rielly and a bunch of Meh.

^ This. His analytics don't support those positive numbers this year. He is noticeably worse than the last 2 seasons. even though his oz starts are up. Hits are down and TkA as well.

The last 2 years were much bigger samples so I have faith he gets back to that level after a healthy stretch. Lets see what the next 30 games can bring.

i remember being so happy he slipped to #17 so we could grab him- wasn't he touted as a top 3 pick but had his draft year season cut short from injuries/mono or something? Just like how Rielly slipped to #5 because of an injury.

I remember people being mad we traded Sandin over Lilly lol

You need to adjust your expectations. 4M is not top 4 money anymore. Bottom end top 4.

His CF numbers are mediocre but his xGF numbers are very good, second lowest xGA/60 to only Benoit and an xGF% of 56%. Also has the lowest 5v5 GA/60 on the team. Seems to be doing something right

Lilly is having a very good season. According to Dom's model at The Athletic he's having the highest positive impact of our defensemen, and is projected to finish the season the same way, alongside Rielly.

I don't know what that means in terms of a future contract. A lot will hinge on the playoffs and how much trust Sheldon puts into him. A bridge deal would see him on the cap cheap for at least a couple of years, but if the Leafs make a gamble they could have an effective top 4 right shot defenseman at a high value contract for four years or more, effectively replacing close to what Brodie's cap is and his minutes.

Wow so I guess I’m not crazy for wanting to get ahead of this contract and sign him for 8 years 5 mill thanks for letting me see this
