This is what happens when you don't have pos coach micromanaging your d-game; while giving free reign to trash like holl and gio

Keefe shouldn't even get to coach the ECHL frreakin jackass
He coached lily fine down in the A, it was his love affair with Holl that I think ultimate Blinded him and likely also now cost his job

McCabe who was dreadful these playoffs? Maybe not so bad in the Tampa series, but unplayable in the Florida one.
To be fair they had 3 defenseman that had a brutal Florida series as well as most of the forwards plus Samsonov. I think thats more of a team fail, or at least I would want to see who doesn't bounce back after a coaching change before planning moves. I think the 21 games after the trade where he was +12 are probably a better barometer of what McCabe can be than the 3 game Florida sample.

McCabe had never been in the NHL playoffs before.

He gets traded to a team that only plays in the first round.

He's confused.

The only thing Liljegren needs to hear is to be ready to be someone on this team next year.

Not the next 2-3 years from now, next year. He has the tools and abilities to be on our 2nd pairing.
He needs to avoid the big mistake that hes so prone to

I think he needs confidence from his coach.

It seemed like if he made any mistake, Keefe would sit him for Holl, especially after Keefe figured out Schenn was great. Gripped the stick a bit too tight at times I think out of fear of making that mistake.
He's done it for his entire Leafs career, whether his role was on the line or not.

My assessment of Keefe Hockey is he gets a lot of regular season mileage out of lesser defensemen by enabling them to do more in the east west passing, retreat and regroup and activating along the boards for aggressive pinches. You're letting guys who probably have shorter leashes elsewhere hold the puck longer, make riskier transition plays and that pays off over 82 games.

Problem with this aggressive go-no-go risk to reward ratio into the playoffs is your weaker links can't execute those little extras without getting burned by a very aggressive forecheck. That's why you see these catastrophic breakdowns, odd man rushes and fire drills.

100% this. I love his play personally, but Keefe has clearly never believed in him. He can play unreal for like 30 games straight, has one bad game, Keefe healthy scratches him for a week.

Every NHL player will tell you confidence from your coach is absolutely essential. If Keefe gets the boot, I’ll bet the next coach trusts him way more (it’s truly strange how little Keefe trusts him), and he quickly becomes a pillar of our defence.

McCabe was fine if not good in the TB series. It was only after that series did you hear Keefe saying he thought that he played well but expected more offence from him. Then we got a pinching McCabe who wouldn't hit anymore because the coach probably told him that pinching was more important or something stupid to that effect. He turned McCabe into just another not very good offensive defensemen who wasn't physical. Sound familiar?

It just kills me that they played this stupid High Risk game with our D. It's not like having Holl or McCabe behind the opponents net resulted in tons of chances. What it did do was cause them to be out of position a lot of the times for very little reward. I am sure there is a spread sheet somewhere that said it was the thing to do. That, and no slap shots from the point. That is a no-no around here.

If he becomes a top 4 main stay we look decent on defence. The key this year is getting a top 4 right d for Mo(lmao the key every year)
Rielly-?
McCabe-Lily
Brodie-kling
Gio(rest him down the stretch)
I think you’re underrating Brodie, but overrating McCabe and Klingberg. In terms of dmen I actually feel comfortable relying on in the playoffs, it’s:

Rielly - Brodie
xxx - Liljegren
xxx - xxx

Gio has looked quite good to start the season too, but he IS the oldest player in the league, worried he’ll run out of gas by the playoffs. Klingberg is great offensively, but man, he’s SO bad defensively, don’t trust him 5v5 in the playoffs. Then McCabe is just not particularly good at anything but physicality.

The reason I have Brodie down lower is because he’s one of the only guys I trust to fully babysit Klingberg in our d zone. Brodie is easily our best defensive d. We need a situation where we get a schenn esq player who works with Mo allowing Brodie to solidify our bottom pair or second pair. If lily can do that with mo or work with McCabe great!

Ah fair, I do agree Brodie would be a good Klingberg babysitter, but I think he’s a good Rielly partner too. Although agreed Schenn was a beautiful fit beside Rielly, wish we would’ve kept him!

This defence:

Rielly - Schenn
Cole - Brodie
McCabe - Liljegren
Gio

Would have been very doable in the offseason, and very similar cap-wise to what we currently have:

Rielly - Brodie
McCabe - Liljegren
Gio - Klingberg
Timmins

But would’ve been way, way better (in my opinion, at least).

The first defense provides little offense aside from Rielly

Klingberg we sacrificed defensive play for transition and in zone offense. We havent had a good #2D who can give 50 pts since Gardiner in 2018

We need/needed to upgrade on McCabe to drop him to pair 3

Rielly - Brodie
XXX - Klingberg
McCabe - Lilijgren
Gio

We need to get that 2nd pairing LHD/RHD who is able to give us 25-30 pts while being a strong in zone defensive player with some physicality

We need a 30 year old Gio and 30 year old Bogozian. I hope we also do not need 30 year old Brodie in March.
