I think HFers are trying a bit too hard to make Liljegren look like some amazing d-men prospect.

I just don't see him turning out to be anything special - he's turning 23, not exactly the youngest. I remember when they traded Durzi and I cursed wishing it was Liljegren instead.
You know that durzi is a year older than Liljegren right? Who has 2 more points in 1 more game, and 9 of those have come on the powerplay. Durzi is also smaller, and a complete train wreck defensively.

Liljegren has shown both very good and bad but that's to be expected with a young player playing their first full NHL season.

He has a little Jake Gardiner disconnected controller where sometimes he overhandles the puck or puts himself in a bad position and makes a questionable play.

I think playing on a second pairing with an experienced vet would be the most I'd expect out of him for this years playoffs and some might even say that's asking too much.

He looks like a player that alot of patience will need to be given towards because the good things he does comes with some wtf moments.

Do people want him to fail or something, all I see is complaining about his play. Hes not perfect but he does some very good stuff, and will only get better. How about we give a couple of seasons in the NHL before we write him off.

Either Liljegren or Sandin will be in the lineup come playoff time, probably not both. It's time for everybody to get their votes in.

If Muzzin is on track to come back before the end of the regular season and they don’t make a big add be prepared for:
Rielly Brodie
Muzzin Holl/Lil
Sandin bush/lil/holl
Probably lil is the 7th to start Dermott probably on way out.

It will most likely be Liljegren.

We have Lyubushkin who we just paid a decent amount to bring in.

Whereas Dermott getting in over Sandin almost certainly won't happen, and Sandin is our 2PP guy. We have other people can do the PK instead of Liljegren (namely Muzzin, Brodie, Lyubushkin, Holl, and maybe even Rielly if one of those guys is in the box).

Although I imagine Liljegren will get more than enough playing time in the playoffs.

If you read the posts properly we're willing to give him his whole career. Just don't want him in the top 4 today.
I have been reading fine, people are a little blind in this forum. People want a rookie defender to be perfect already. He's got everything to be a solid defender, he just looks like a player whos in his head sometimes. The only way to overcome is to keep playing, not being yoyoed in and out of line up. Sandin, Dermott and Holl make way more mistakes and get less than half the hate.

Holl gets crapped on for the smallest of things. People are literally looking for an excuse to crap on him, even though he has been great for most of the season.

Sandin escapes a lot of criticism. Dermott doesn't really do enough to warrant anything, but he has been good when he has played too.

All I can say is Im glad you aren't our GM. Durzi is exactly the kind of player we don't need.

Need or no need - he definitely holds more value than Liljegren. I don't even think Liljegren will be in our starting lineup come playoffs so please stop acting like he addresses our need. It's between him or Sandin - no way both play and our D needs improvement.

I'll have to disagree on holl, he's been terrible most of the season, has played better recently. Either way I want all of them to succeed, some players need more time.

No he doesn't. He is smaller, a lot worse defensively and only has 2 more points in 1 more game despite playing powerplay minutes.

I don't know what you're reading. There's less than 5 people on this board who truly hate him. Most are fine with him on third pair and like his future outlook as a full time top 4. Almost everyone agrees he needs to just play and stop being toyed with. The only disagreement is what pairing he should be on in the playoffs. I don't think he's ready for a core role.

You guys keep yelling at imaginary people

You never really know how a defenseman will keep developing as they mature, so this is just a general comment as we see Liljegren in progress, but generally those panicky types aren't really worth the investment.

I think the media is worse than the forum. I think there are some on the forum who pretty much just parrot what the media is saying. The media are the ones who are completely off on Liljegren, but they have invested heavily in his failure that they will pretty much double down on it now.

Liljegren won't get a core role in the playoffs short of there being injuries. I think the defensive responsibilities will be fairly even with the top 2 pairs (Rielly-Brodie, Muzzin-Holl). Sandin-Lyubushkin are not going to get garbage minutes, but they will get noticeablely less (maybe high teens).

Then those are the people I'm talking about. His breakout passes alone give me a lot of hope for his future. To be good at that, it means you read the play quickly, he's just gotta learn the same defensively.

It’s clear Liljegren is better suited on the third pair for now. Wouldn’t be surprised to see him as the 7th defenceman heading into the playoffs as well.

That's where he should be. 7th d coming on for injuries or relief effort
His body still not ready for night in night out work

Every defenseman in hockey would look better on the 3rd pairing.

Because it's much easier.

Lilly also happened to look good on the top pairing, though.

He’s definitely had moments he’s looked good on the second pair, as well as the first but overall on a larger test he’s definitely more suited on the third pair for now. It’s his first NHL season, there’s nothing wrong with that. He’ll continue to develop and most likely move up in time.

He looked good tonight, I liked him with Sandin. He looked more poised and confident. They still made a few errors as a pairing but I really liked his game tonight. He transitioned out of the defensive zone effortlessly.

Best game for him in a while IMO! I know people will say he looked great on the top pairing, I’m not convinced of that. Eye test for me showed he struggled playing with Rielly, but I think he is going to be a great 2nd pairing guy with Sandin for a long time.
