This model doesn't really account for cap space though so it's kind of meaningless IMO. McDavid probably should be at 25-30M according to that model but I think the key is that Liljegren is clearly playing at a high level and it would be a mistake if he is on the bench for even a single playoff game.

The Leafs should look to sign him to a 7-8 year deal.

Our best defence includes Liljegren.
Ideally
Rielly-Brodie
McCabe-Liljegren
Gio-Holl(sub Schenn and Gustavsson in on occasion)
You can adjust based on matchups and situations. If you don't trust Liljegren late in games when holding a lead, then run Brodie, McCabe, Gio and Holl. If you need more offense, you play Liljegren and Rielly. With these 6, you have flexibility to shelter Liljegren too and don't even have to play him on PK if you don't want too.
Keefe just should stop complicating this.

So I can't be the only one who is frustrated and baffled by how bad Lily is with the puck in his own end. His ability to make a first pass might be worse than Holl. Either passing right to the opponent's stick, or wiffing on the puck is an occurrence every single game. I don't recall this happening last year, and would love to see that stop. He needs to be buried in the 3rd pair with sheltered minutes until that changes.

This situation sucks. We were this close to having a really good and effective right side D with Brodie, Liljegren, and the acquisition of Schenn. Two steady rarely make mistake defensemen who can move the puck and a bruiser who can lay the body, protect the front of the net, and give you reliable bottom pairing minutes.

Instead, Liljegren has joined Holl on the “this player is likely to f*** up” list and the confidence he’s built up all season has been shattered in a matter of weeks. All because Keefe just can’t not have Justin Holl in the lineup and chose to scratch the better (back then anyway) of the two defensemen to give his boy a chance to find chemistry and a spot amidst the new acquisitions.

So congrats Keefe. You get to play your son in the playoffs and neither the fans or media will chastise you for it. It took you having to break a young promising defenseman in the middle of a good season but hey, small price to pay.

And yes yes Liljegren should get a majority of the blame and take responsibility for his own poor play, but let’s not act like the coaching staff after the TDL showed any confidence in him or put him in a position to succeed. Frankly it seems like an unforced error to cut down a young player playing like a veteran top 4 defenseman instead of nurturing that talent but what do I know?

C’est la vie. Maybe next year he’ll be a full timer and lock for the playoffs.

Not worried. Kid will still be our best D by next year or two. He was our best D along with Gio earlier in the season but slumps happen especially if you lose confidence when you are young.

People penciling him outside the top 6 for playoffs are lost. In lilly we trust

I see his whiffing on pucks being the result of using a stick that is too long. It helps with poke checks and all around defensive play...but it also causes him problems when the puck is too close to his body when he handles it. Simple fix really...get a bit of a shorter stick.

I am now convinced that if we keep Keefe, we will lose Liljegren. Forget about his development stagnating, I can easily see Liljegren and Timmins fail because Keefe doesn't know how to develop players.

If Keefe and Holl stay after this season, I don't see either Liljegren or Timmins being given any meaningful opportunity. Makes me wonder about Knies too, to be honest.

Liljegren is getting opportunities but currently failing, I think he will be a great player, but right now he is not seizing his opportunities right now.

If you want to blame anyone, blame Dubas for giving Keefe too many NHL players.

Either he'll be moved to get him away from Keefe, or Keefe will be fired because playoffs.

I congratulate you on consistently contradicting your own screen name, but your lack of ability to see what's right in front of your face alternates between annoying and hilarious.

Clearly Keefe treats players differently. Liljegren is still a young player, who no doubts remembers being sat early in the playoffs last year, and not drawing in again. Add to it that while defensive players have been sat, but Keefe thinks is smart to go public when Liljegren sits to say he isn't playing well, and you don't think that eats at and erodes a young players confidence? Come on.

When was the last time Holl was publicly criticized by Keefe for not playing well, and how many times has Holl been sat compared to Liljegren? You know, Holl the UFA, who was too precious to expose in the Expansion Draft and got exploited in the Playoffs the past 2 years? Too valuable of a piece for our Team to upset of course.

How about these meaningless games we are throwing to play 11-7. Why hasn't Timmins been able to draw into even 1 game? Another kid who looks to factor into our plans as early as next season, but he's done for the year.

Make no mistake, we win despite Keefe, not because of him, and he is not a good coach for the development of our young players. I want the Leafs to win, but long-term we are better off the minute he is fired.

Ya, obviously he treats people differently... people are not all the same. Holl was critiqued a few weeks ago if I am not mistaken. Timmins is like #9 on the depth chart. So much wrong with this post.

I think there are a combination of factors here.

I'm assuming he is/was very close with Sandin and Engval, and that he's missing them both.

Those guys get moved out, now suddenly Lily is questioning his own job security. Combine that with adding in even more competition with Schenn and Gustafsson and Lily really starts to second guess his status.

Then genius Keefe decides to play lineup blender and ensures that a young Lily not only plays with someone different every shift, but that his minutes are drastically reduced- to the point he even sits out games.

The cherry on the top is Keefe publically criticizing him. That is not the way I would have handled a young up-and-coming defenseman.

Keefe is f***ing up his development. No reason any of our surplus D players, that Dubas brought in, needed to displace Lilj. He was one of best D for the first half of the season. Keefe's hack job with the lines has completely gone to Lilj's head at this point.

Keefe is the main culprit. A kid whose struggled with confidence before was playing great hockey, and the coach decides to criticize him for no reason whatsoever, and now he's making errors that he was almost never making before.
It might be too late to salvage Liljegren this season. Maybe next year with a new coach depending on what happens in the playoffs.

So I am now seeing everyone say Liljegren is mentally weak... isn't even happy that it doesn't look like he will be playing in the playoffs? Mentally weak D in the playoffs doesn't sound good to me.

Yes because the rest of our team has shown they are strong mentally. I don't think we need to talk about the playoffs history.
