I don’t disagree with anything after the first sentence, but Liljegren was not bad last night. He had a bad shift that lead to the game winning goal, but that doesn’t undo all the good plays he made. Unfortunately these things are going to happen with a player with so little nhl experience. Part of the growing process

Obviously wasn't his best game of the season, but outside the egregious turnover leading to the goal he was okay. Wasn't worse than Rielly or Muzzin yesterday who looked like complete ass on multiple occasions.

I love your optimism but Robinson was pretty much the toughest D in the League, 6'4" 225 lbs and won 2 Norris and 10 all star appearances in 20 years.
You could make a million dollars easy betting Lily will make 2 all star appearances.

He had two shifts where I'd blame him for goals, so that's bad enough. Imagine if all the d did that in a game.

Anyway I'm not dumping on him he's young, with potential, but just worrying come playoffs.

IMO risky to go with 2 rookie dmen into the playoffs if you seriously want to contend. Lily might have a great future as a Leaf but we need a more riper dman now if we want to take out both Florida teams.

I tend to agree and it is why I have said upgrade the D and let it ride.

no it’s not, why is there always a scape goat for Liljegren’s mistakes. The turnover is what caused the confusion in defensive zone coverage. Everyone was out of place and not in position because Liljegren turned the puck over. It’s a direct correlation. Just because he’s young doesn’t mean he’s exempt from critique. All he had to do was just dump the puck in, everyone who’s tired changes & off we go. But he had a brainfart that led to a 2 on 1 (which Muzzin actually defended pretty well) and then they got hemmed in the zone.

Muzzin's been doing that to every partner this year. It's too bad the turnover sticks out, because Liljegren was solid aside from that. I thought the 2nd period was some of the best he's played all season defensively.

I said the same thing at the beginning of the season. When AM and MM, JT and WN, with MR's help are our best players on the ice at the same time, then we are a team to be reckoned with. Until then...

Lil did a decent job in last nights debacle vs the Habs. He's certainly becoming more comfortable with the puck on his stick. An uptick in his ability to process the game will be an important step in his further development. I say play the guy regularly and monitor his growth. He could be only 10-20 games from hitting another level.

You worry about him getting pushed around in the front of the net and thats a legit concern. Thats normal for a rookie though. I have said I believe he is better suited as a 7d in the playoffs and thats fine.

GSVA updated today and Lilly got his first update in like a month and a half (Dom had him in the pressbox for the last bunch of updates). Lilly had moved up to 0.6 last time, and he keeps going up....

I'll have to check but I'm pretty sure that's the only defense in the league with 6 guys at 1.0 or higher.

It's easy for a player to be sheltered and have good analytics, but Liljegren has actually been good during his stints higher in the lineup too. He's so obviously a quality NHL player, and will only get better

Have never heard Lily mentioned in talks for ROY.

Where are Raymond, Zegras, Swayman, Mercer, Drysdale, Carrier, Jeannot etc. ranked ??

He's much better at a younger age than Stralman was.

I know I've been part of the OG Lilly hype crew but tbh, he doesn't look too far out of place on the top pairing with Rielly so far. Ideally, you want Brodie there still but I think, for the time being, he and Rielly have been the least of our problems defensively. Sandin probably won't ever see top pairing with Rielly ever again but I think he's a good player with Lilly on the 3rd pair. Lalboosh is a solid addition too and I think if he was paired with a more defensive-minded defenseman, they would be quite successful. I think our ideal pairings are.

Brodie - Rielly
Muzzin - Laboosh
Sandin - Lilly
Dermott - Holl
