I don’t think you’re wrong. I just trust Dermott the least of all our defensemen. Rocks for brains, jittery, slight, and doesn’t bring anything offensively. He’s Jake Gardiner but worse in every aspect (Jake was at least a very good player for awhile).

for sure Dermott doesn’t think. Just blindly throws the puck away in the defensive zone. At least Liljegren tries to make a play. Doesn’t always work but you can see his intent. Dermott just does whatever whenever. But Dermott is stronger on his feet against opponents. It’s a shame cause Dermott has all the tools idk why he can’t figure it our

Perhaps one day but they aren't there yet.
It is really interesting how fans can forget Sandin DIRECTLY cost us 2 games against Habs in series and game 1 was worst due to his complete lack of foot speed .. but last night both were completely useless defensively and Dermy was our best defender BY FAR

There are definitely some interesting interpretations of what happens on the ice around here.
Makes for some entertaining reading.

Dermott is disappointing in the sense he should be a solid top 4 by now but he is no way the worse defender on the team.

agreed, I’ve said it in the Dermott thread. Dermott needs a fresh start somewhere else. He’ll grow and flourish. A spot like Anaheim would be good for him. Especially if they move on from certain players

Holl is BY FAR worst player we have on team defense .. he tries hard but he just does not have da raw god given skills .. when he plays a simple defensive positioning game he can play in a 6/7 role though .. you are right on Dermy after 5 years he should be able to play 2nd pair consistently when required .. too bad cause kid has all da skills - speed, shot and hands .. but he is lacking in learnings for sure and he still is processing game by doing calcs and he hesitates all da time .. it should be coming natural by now

Not sure how you can watch Dermott play and think he’s not our worst defender? Makes as many mistakes as our Swedes but at least the Swedes contribute something the other way. Dermott roams the ice with pebbles in a tin can rattling about for brains. Great skater yet somehow gets walked at least once a game. Tries to be physical but no impact. Sandin can at least lay someone out and presents a shooting threat. I can feel Dermott’s stress when I watch him play hockey and that’s not good.

I'm not sure what Liljegren did to make Hayes and even Jeff so mad at him. Bunkis has now resorted to taking shots at the Liljegren supporters on his show.

i think these people are still clinging to the completely unfounded idea that we offered him to LA and they weren’t interested. Like a) it’s even true and b) even if it were that it means absolutely anything. Lil is young and inexperienced and is going to make mistakes as most anyone in his situation does, but these people are constantly looking for reasons to doubt or talk poorly about him and it’s so tiresome. I think they are under the misguided impression poking everyone hole they possibly can in his game makes them sound smart, when really they just come across like asshats

Had a very rough defensive game together with Sandin last night but they are kids .. good learnings for both .. they struggle against SPEED .. nothing new here .. same old same old

He did? I watched that game as well and I didn’t have that take away at all. In fact Liljegren was on the ice for 4 of our goals and just 1 jersey goal. +3 on the night. Played a couple solid pk minutes and had an assist as well. I thought he played pretty well tbh

He gave up 3 2 on 1's in 1st period but Dermy bailed him out twice and of course one found back of net

lol, does that negate the fact that he got completely burned on the Andreas Johnsson goal? Or the fact that he turned the puck over in front of the net with no one even in his vicinity? I swear some of you act like we don't watch the game and just pick on him to pick on him. This has been consistent with Liljegren all year, he makes some good plays but he gets beat a LOT. the "he's just a rookie" thing isn't going to be able to be used forever. Yes a lot of young dmen make mistakes, but he makes them quite often.

If he pans out into a top 4 d then sick, that's better for us. But let's be honest, if he has to play top 4 minutes for us in the playoffs this year we are screwed.

I have given up trying to understand these media people. The fact that Noodles, who takes shots on anything Leafs related regularly, doesn't criticize Liljegren tells us the problem is with the other guys like Hayes, Jeff, and Bunkis.
For example, yesterday Noodles said "I don't think both young guys should play in a playoff series together" thats completely fair and reasonable. Jeff then says "can you even play Liljegren 5-7 minutes a game". Like come on.

With Liljegren's flub yesterday, looking forward to Hayes ripping him today.

But he is a rookie. This is his first year in the league. Definition of a rookie. Save that dig at least till next year. You're going to need some ammo next year too.

I guess by your logic Severson doesn't even belong in the NHL the way he played that 2 on 1. Are you on the Sandin thread pointing out every one of his mistakes?

Sandin was great last night, arguably our best D. Lilj struggled

No one on our defense played DEFENSE .. except Dermy who was ok .. Sandin is an offensive rover not a D man
Dermy is struggling. Guy can't handle pressure and gets confused by forechecks. Last night wasn't his worst effort, but it's a constant issue along with lack of partner support, constantly putting them under needless pressure.

haha I won’t need to save ammo because it’s probably going to be the same result. Turn over, poor defensive coverage, leads to goal. But “he’s still young, he’s a top 4 elite defenseman”. We’re in win now, I don’t doubt he will be a regular nhl’er but we’re talking about contributions to the team now and I’m not seeing how he makes us significantly better going into the playoffs this year

Lilly struggled in the 1st, but was good afterwards.
Dermott is a major problem though. Move him to a top 4 role, and it was a disaster. Play him in a 3rd pairing role and still struggles. It's funny Liljegren has played his best hockey with everyone but Dermott.

Sandin was high profile in the transition game and manning the point, handling the puck and some of the skill items but was still a bit of a scramble in his own end. The big test is when a heavy grind team targets him on the forecheck, which wasn’t necessarily an issue vs Jersey.
