If we evaluate on one game, the whole team should have been traded 5 years ago. He wasn't even the worst from them.

Oh, he was, and by a long shot. I am still waiting for him to bring some sort of positive impact to a game. I might have blinked and missed it. He got manhandled all over the defensive zone... that is more my concern. If you cannot compete physically, you are probably playing in the wrong league.

Sandin, Dermott and Biega were all far, far worse. Lilly did not play well though, no denying it.

Disagree, he was the worst of the foursome imo. Physically incapable of competing... no qualms with his passing and offence... but when push came to shove, he was litereally on his ass.

Your eye test needs some work. You should also familiarize yourself with advanced stats.

No he wasn't.
Maybe try watching majority of his games this season where he has been good. Don't let emotions get the better of you.

Set up for failure tonight playing without adult supervision.

He and Sandin really shouldn't be paired together all night long if there's a heavy forecheck put on them. They don't execute quickly enough with the puck with simple zone outs and they're both running around unable to seal the boards or eat a puck or pin a guy reliably. Liljegren wasn't good but Sandin can be sub-NHL when he's playing below his own goal line.

Really failed a big test against the Rangers. Didn't step up.

Calm down.
So if he played well, does that mean stud guaranteed.

This game should put to rest the notion that we can run either of those guys in the top 4 in the playoffs. Liljegren is 22. He hasn’t even played a full season in the league. His time will come but for now, Sheldon Keefe has been proven right and he shouldn’t get a look in the top 4 of a healthy lineup

The entire bottom four were bad. There's no need to single out Liljegren. That play where he tried to skate it out and it ended up in our net shortly after was undoubtedly awful, but his teammates where also awful and had their own brain cramps.

I think there will be more tests and development time but putting two young guys together shouldn't be play especially when compromised early and often in a game. Why didn't each of them get put beside Brodie and Rielly?

My friend, I have not missed a Leaf game in years. He has had some good ones... playing 3rd pairing against weaker opponents. This was a big opportunity to take a step... the results speak for themselves.

Yea, they can only take you so far. This guy was so physically outmatched it was embarassing man... eye test > fancy stats. I hope he plays well on Saturday to get back on a positive trend.

This was clearly a test... he failed. There will be more... but he is not aceing anything yet from what I have watched.
I think him and Sandin have shown that they are good against third pairing competition. They very clearly did not handle tonight well though and unfortunately for the team Dermott and Biega were also just as bad if not worse.

Thats a better post. Your other posts were acting like he should be off hockey all together. Your right he isn't ready for top 4 mins but can play in a 3rd pair role. Thats not a bad thing.

That would have probably been the better route to take this game, although there’s an argument to be made that Morgan Rielly is a much better player when paired with Brodie, and they probably did not want to compromise on that

Lilly has played some really good games. Tonight wasn't one of those games.

He's young and needs the experience to get better and more consistent.

With that being said, his giveaways were beer league quality and I'm sure he knows it.

He also needs to figure out how to handle the physicality.

I agree, though it's a problem if we need to have a babysitter for our best defenseman instead of having him help out the kids.

True he failed but even if he was amazing, he still isn't ready. He could be fantastic on Saturday and I would still say the same.
Fact is, you shouldn't overract on one game.

I don’t care if people call me a hater, but I’ve been saying this about his game for the past few months. He is not that solid defensively. He makes a shit ton of mistakes and today they caught up with him. That being said, he isn’t complete shit, but I also just don’t see that top 4 upside with him. He’s a bottom pairing guy who can push into the top 4 depending on match ups. Just not strong enough defensively to be a guy that is gonna be relied upon to play against top forwards in my opinion.

Yup. Nobody from the bottom 4 was good. Thats all we should say. What Lilly has shown is he can play 3rd pair minutes with secondary PK time. Thats good enough right now.

Agreed. The bottom 4 were bad... but more in their inability to not handle the physicality and the speed of the opponent... mind you, not sure they got a lot of help from their forwards and goalie. I mean, they cannot own this on their own... I don't mean to insinuate that.

That would be you reading into my comments. I never said that, ever... in any post... Sounds like you were projecting your own thoughts into my comments?

Really it was a bad effort from most of the team defensively. The bottom 4 D were undeniably atrocious with their coverage and the Matthews line had a rough night in their own end. Throw in a bad performance from Campbell and it was pretty well destined to be a disaster.

I mean... how can we argue with that. Spot on.
