you think? He wasn’t even top 3 on the team?

He got caught going for a skate. But man I thought sandin. Dermott and biega were way worse
They were way way way way worse .. it looked like we had 2 NHL D men on ice .. and a rook in Lily trying to cover up for 3 AHLers

The Leafs talent evaluators and powers that be don’t really draft or prioritize for these bottom 6 and defensive defensemen roles.

On draft day we always hear the mantra of BPA and stashing unique and high upside skill which sounds clever and is fine. But the downside to that calculation is while we have Sandin, Niemela, Liljegren, Hollowell, Loponen, Kokkonen, Koster, Miller etc. we skew heavy towards trying to find the next Torey Krug but we don’t have a Zdeno Chara to protect him.
So true

I mean isnt't that why you play young players? Get this kid a solid 40-50 games and then make a preliminary evaluation.

He has already shown he can play and that bomb on his first goal shows he has an NHL shot. The question for me is how high his ceiling is.

Right now he should be playing third pairing to get his legs but I see top 4 eventually.

Oh i don't disagree. I just don't see why / how Holl is a better option right now than Lilly.

Liljegren got exposed by Parise but didn't have any mistakes worth discussing after that.

I wasn't impressed by Sandin tonight. He would have got smashed by a playoff team. Islanders were trash.

the irony of this LOL. Liljegren was getting smashed & tossed like a rag doll the entire second period

Had the weird. Bouncing puck. Still kind of feel he got stuck mentally rather than bad bounce. Played well beyond that

His reads weren’t 100% last night, but pretty solid.
Just seems like he has a bit of a black cloud over him sometimes, where if it can go wrong it will.
Also, nice to see him get a bit chippy in the third period. He’s jacked, I wouldn’t mind seeing him add a bit more of that.

Vast majority of rookie D go through that. I don’t think he’ll take that next step until next year. Problem is many people seem to ignore he’s a rookie while giving Dermott, a 5 year vet, a longer leash. Dermott has been making those mistakes for 5 years in the NHL. Never understood the fan club he had going on here for the longest time. Guys the epitome of mediocre.

Every time he got hit he made the play and the puck got out. Don’t care if he’s on the seat of his pants if he makes the play.

The isles had a few minutes where they decided to chase hits, and they basically didn’t touch the puck that entire time.

Agree it’s a pretty normal learning curve.
Timeline seems reasonable about top 4 expectations too, which makes me happy he’s getting reps in that role now.
TD has shown flashes, but yeah, seems to leave you wanting.
I wonder if he’s a candidate for a deal for a similar C; someone who’s underwhelmed but the book isn’t closed yet.
