As someone who had all but given up on Liljegren, I am happy to hear so much positivity about his pre-season performance. He played well when I saw him (haven't watched all of the preseason), and I'd be thrilled if he can make the team.

IMO it's pretty close to fish or cut-bait time with all three of Liljegren, Sandin, and Travis Dermott. Especially Dermott. Might need to just trade whoever can't make the squad, rather than have them stagnate.

Remember that only 2 defensemen in the 2017 draft have established themselves as more than #6 dmen for good teams - Makar and Heiskenen. And Makar is near a year older than Timmy.

Ferraro played top-4 last year for a very bad sharks team, and is older than Timmy too.

Jokhiraju, Valimaki, Hague have all played some games but are still in the borderline #6/7 dman category and have yet to establish themselves as full-time starting NHLers. Valimaki and Hague are also older than Lilly, while Jokhiarju has bounced between two very bad teams.

Part of the forward problem IMO has been the sporatic puck movement skill of the defense. The forwards tend to over-commit defensively to help get the puck out and it slows things down.

very interesting. I don’t know how one could read this as anything other than sandin, liljegren and brooks will be in the nhl this year.

I have no idea how that’ll work cap wise though unless a trade is in the works, but I’m all for it.

I'm betting that if on the Marlies or Leafs, Brooks will wear 77, Lilligren 37 and Sandin 38.

Dermott is going to be bouncing between left and right side depending on who’s in the line up. I see them subbing Liljegren and Sandin in and out to start the season.

what happened? Keefer was saying mix/match vets with rooks. i like muzzy and lily to start year. I don't like our bottom guys right now but i think you will see minutes drop for Holl/Dermy/Sandin. i was hoping we would find a breakthrough D from below but i guess not. Team is much weaker without Bogo and everyone will see it shortly.

At one point you were pretty high on Dermy. Are you still? I mean, this really has to be the year he steps forward, to be much more than he's been.
 
Speaking about numbers, I'd love to see Liljegren and Sandin pick their numbers if they're planning on keeping them in the NHL.

Any 30's number (besides 34 now) is just a goalie number for me. I get 7 is retired and 8 is Muzzin's, but do they really want 37 and 38? Trash.

Yeah it's odd. Doesn't make sense to give up his number if he's going to the AHL. From the cap stuff I saw, it's tough to fit him in because of his bonuses so maybe they have to make a trade. I was able to by removing Engvall but it looks like Brooks is also making the team so that might complicate it again.

He has raw skating skills and he has da fight in him .. but he did not step forward last year like I expected .. he got to play with Bogo and quite frankly he should have learned more .. in playoffs he disappointed when Muzzy went down our defense weakened .. always remember this is pro defense and kids take a long long time to develop and learn and it is not linear for sure .. I don't think he is done but I do think he did not progress enough .. and Sandin is still way too slow to play for us although I like his strength on body and puck and his smarts .. to me Lily looks better right now and I would give him a shot with our best defender Muzzy to see what he 's got

I'd like to see Lil get a real shot ...Holl has looked horrid this preseason, and he always fades in the 2nd half (worn down i guess)
last night, he should have been a leader on the ice, and he was a liability

Holl is not that good .. i am telling you guys he is a 6th/7th on most NHL teams .. people get blinded because he is big and can skate which are 2 important characteristics for sure .. anyone will look better with Muzzy .. Lily maybe too but so far he looks solid

I worry about him because when he’s been away from Muzzin he has not looked good.

I think we're going to see a package deal a la Grabner before the season starts. We have 5+ NHL bodies too many even with a stacked Marlies roster.

Liljegren has been fantastic in preseason, how much more breakout are we looking for here?
