You say that like 1.5m is a lot.

It somewhat is though in comparison to what he signed for last season. His competition last season was also respectively more experienced and older than he was (Bogosian/Lehtonen). It would seem strange for him to be on the outside looking in at this early stage when competing with the likes of Menell, Liljegren and Sandin.

Sandin and Liljegren are highly skilled 1st round pick dmen who likely could have been quality fulltime nhlers before now, and both now seem over-ready. I don't think it even says anything bad about Dermott if those two outplay him.

Fair enough. I do expect Sandin and Liljegren to have the higher ceiling and to be better over the long haul. I'm just a bit cautious about having both of them in the lineup right now.

Liljegren has been one of our best defenseman this preseason. He’s looked great
He's looked good for sure, if we wants to stick at the NHL level though he's gotta make decisions quickly and confidently though. I find pretty often when he has the puck he'll look off a pass, hold on to it, and not be able to find a better play and end up making that pass anyways but at that point the receiving player is confused and is already circling back thinking of something different.

He can make a great stretch pass though. He's going to get playing time this year, he's gotta grab the opportunity and really assert himself. I guess how I see it is, when the game is "coming to him" e.g. defending off the rush, he looks good, but when he has chances to assert himself, he's gotta make decisions with authority and confidence... if that makes sense

Call me old fashioned but I do think playing defense is more than just points and we've all seen Barrie defend

He was an embarrassment

I mean, he's clearly an NHL dman. And he didn't look good with Muzzin.

Barrie was horrible here, and seeing his name makes me cringe. One of the worst Dmen I’ve seen on our team

I think trading Holl would be a mistake. Given his 2 million dollar cap hit for this year and next, that’s a steal with what similar defencemen signed for this off-season. He’s a perfect fit on the third pair and on the penalty kill.

Dermott would be the defenceman I would be looking to trade.

To Toronto: Ryan Lindgren
To Rangers: Travis Dermott, Ilya Mikheyev

Or

To Toronto: Marcus Pettersson
To Pittsburgh: Travis Dermott, Ilya Mikheyev

Ritchie - Matthews - Marner
Bunting - Tavares - Nylander
Kerfoot - Kampf - Kase
Spezza - Brooks - Simmonds

Rielly - Brodie
Muzzin - Liljegren
Pettersson - Holl
At the same point as Dermott in his career, Holl was playing for the AHL with a decidedly worse leafs defense.
We have seen the best of Holl. He will be 30 year old in January. He has had one decent year (last one) and was black hole offensively the year before.

If Keefe is smart he runs these pairings:

Rielly Brodie
Muzzin Liljegren
Sandin Holl
Dermott

Kids each play with a vet and Holl gets some easier minutes on the third pairing. If needed Muzzin and Holl on PK. Sandin gets some extra PP time.

Liljegren did everything + more to earn himself a spot to start the year. It's a joke if they don't have him starting game 1.

He's an extremely one dimensional defenseman and not even Muzzin could carry him

That's an extremely nech player

Darnell Nurse seems to pair nicely with him. Well until the playoffs anyway before he started costing the Oilers.

You can't trust him defensively

Top unit PP QB and sheltered bottom pair usage 5v5 is ideal imo

Start asking more of him and trouble is a coming

Sandin has won the PP2 spot, and will at some point challenge for PP1.
He is played awesome this camp, and held on to his pre-camp bottom pairing assignment without question.

He is not IMO in competetition in any way with Lil

I'd like to see both Sandin and Liljegren in our d-core. I think management will opt to play Dermott and one of Sandin/Liljegren - meaning the other returns to the marlies. Lets give Sandin top pairing minutes in the A and see what Lil can do while taking over for Bogo.

There is going to be an injury.
