Bryan Hayes is reading Liljegren the riot act on Overdrive this afternoon saying he’s running out of chances to prove himself as the 7th D. Just want to reiterate how out of date these talking points and how solid he looks in camp. So much bad information out there.

I wonder if the media guys get together and script the guys they like and don’t. There is unanimous questioning of Lily and praising of Sandin on overdrive as well as most of the TSN platforms.

I don’t see that crazy of a distinction in their play and if anything Lily has an edge in preseason performance and certainly over Dermott.

He's been slagging Liljegren since day 1. It's like he is using a poorly written scouting report from 2016 for his analysis and refuses to update it. A lot of what he says is wildly inaccurate (in general, but especially about Liljegren).

EDIT: I don't see where they mentioned him though. They mentioned Sandin and, for whatever reason, think he can play a top 4 role this year if Holl is not playing top 4, but that is it.

Reality is.. Liljegren has been good this camp, but he may become a casualty to being waiver exempt. Regardless, if he starts with the Marlies vs. Leafs he'll likely be up in short order. Generally, I do think we need to monitor our Mikheyev/Engvall situation closely as the funds free up can help support more roster flexibility.

I think we'll lose Adam Brooks to the waiver wire. He was waived last year as an unproven commodity, but he's shown glimpses of being an effective 3-4th liner.

Not even. It's just that Hayes has 20/20 vision.

Stick to your eye test .. Leafs have a hard on for Sandin cause Dubie wants to see his #1 pick up with big club .. to be fair to Dubie this is life in pro hockey everywhere .. but Sandin like or not fanboys has a MAJOR speed deficiency and it will show up again and again this season much like it did against Habs (which was a big part in why we lost) .. right now unless he lengthens his stride he is not an NHL defender pure and simple

that’s a big exaggeration, but yeah he needs to get quicker to reach his potential

Him getting smarter will probably be a bigger boost than his straight line speed, feels like he's been trying to do too much with the puck ever since this pressure was put on him to be a top offensive guy. The stride becomes a glaring issue when he's putting himself in positions to get caught flat footed on a blueline turnover every 2nd shift.

Interesting, because I saw one clip where O Dog was slagging Lil, basically “when is this guy going to make the jump” and it was Hayes that pointed out his age for context, he just started here early.

As an aside, I just can’t forget the attacks by many posters here, when people dared suggest Lil would take some seasoning in his game before he was ready. The nonsensical #freelil crowd that was arguing he was ready 3 years ago, while simultaneously jumping on anyone saying it was normal for a D man to need time, not an indictment, just reality, well I hope you’ve learned something. It was nauseating, yet here we sit going into year five from his draft.

He’s ready.

Honestly, I can't stand Overdrive so I rarely, if ever, watch it. I am going more based on history and Hayes has had a consistent agenda against Liljegren. I listened to the clip from October 6th and they didn't even mention Liljegren so IDK if I am listening to the right clip.

Sure, just a comment on the one time I heard.

I think it was in the 2nd hour.

For whatever reason Hayes had never thought much of Timmy. Which is a weird take because there’s no way he’s watching Marlie games. I think a lot of it has is from the fact they brought him over right away. If liljegren stayed in Sweden his two slide years then came over no one would care he’s not yet in the line up.
Only Timmons and Jokiharju have carved out roles on nhl teams out of d men picked behind him. Joker played on awful Chicago and Buffalo teams and Timmins only has a handful more games on Lil.

So who's left competing for the 5/6 slots
Mennel, Dahlstrom cleared
Kivihalme, Duszak, Hollowell, Kral sent to AHL

Other than Lilje, Sandin, Dermott is there anyone else left in the running?

Hays is a hack. I wouldn’t put any faith in anything he says

With Reilly possibly moving on next summer, there will finally be pressure and the lack of cap to play the younguns and see what we have.

I'm a big fan of Liljegren but even though he's ready to step in and also play well his contact and waiver eligibility are the only things preventing him from being on the opening night roster.

Against the Habs in the playoffs I watched Sandin look completely overmatched and give away game 5 almost singlehandedly, while Dermott did the exact same thing in game 6 OT ... these are 2 transgressions I will not soon forget, and also why I want to see Liljegren get a chance to show what he's got.

Sandin may be the better prospect, more flashy offensively for sure but I also live that he throws the body pretty mean ... I love that.

Dermott? He's a replacement level player and a dime a dozen, he should be the 7th Dman and may clear waivers if it came to that

Reilly Brodie
Muzzin Liljegren (rookie/vet mix)
Sandin Holl (rookie/vet mix)
Dermott

Zero percent chance Dermott would clear waivers.
