Dermott looked really good to me last night, definitely should stay in the lineup I think. Sandin should maybe sit and let Lily play with Dermott for a look. I just don’t see what they see in Sandin, lots of skill but can’t skate well enough to be effective imho. Lily skates well and looked good in the preseason, definitely deserves a chance

Come on now, you know its not what Dermott does, its what Liljegren doesnt do that determines their ice time. Don't be so obtuse, nobody would trust that kid against NHL players in a meaningful game. He's got a nice pro career on some European club ahead of him though, so there's that.

Lilly is great defensively, I’d trust him over Dermott at this point.

Dermott has been a big disappointment. He was looking like a solid top 4 option since his Marlies days and just can’t take that next step in the NHL

Wait, what is going on, people think Dermott played terrible last night and needs to come out for Lily?

Dermott was excellent, covered for Sandin’s gaffs and lack of footspeed multiple times last night.

He was struggling handling the puck on his offside so one of he or Sandin has to come out in place of Lilly. I don’t think he was bad, better than Sandin, but his upside is limited at this point that I rather Sandin develop a pairing with Lilly who is a proper RHD. Plus I thought Sandin was excellent offensively and finally gives us a point shot option which we’ve been missing for a long time.

What game were you watching? Sandin had a great game last night and Dermott played well too. Seriously not sure why this fanbase has such a tendency to feel the need to beat down on their own prospects if they happen to like another one more. Then wonder why historically defensemen play better after they leave Toronto lol.

Sandin was great with the puck on his stick, great poise, passing, dangerous shot. But he also had a couple poor turnovers in the defensive end and his skating was overmatched in open ice. He had good support from Dermott and the forwards to eliminate potential chances against because of that.

To be clear I don’t think Sandin was bad, just that he needed Dermott to clean up some issues for him on the defensive side of the puck.

Sandin has has same problem for last 3 years and he has done nothing to improve his stride .. until he does he will continue to get beat in foot races to pucks in his corner and loose pucks .. he needs a fast D partner who can cover up for him .. Dermy made quite a few outstanding defensive plays last night to help out Sandin .. Sandin's has huge hand eye, core strength skills, is creative and a great puck mover .. his only real issue to become an NHL D is his straight line speed .. I truly hope he focuses strictly on lengthening his stride .. otherwise he will be a PP specialist who needs protection on ice

in our zone, and behind our red line, Sandin is a nightmare. in front of the red line, he's quite good. he just isnt strong enough or quick enough (moving the puck) to handle the boardwork in the corners or behind our net when he's pressured.

I think a nightmare is quite an exaggeration. He’s got some kinks defensively that need to iron out, but most young defenders do, and the primary way he’s going to grow is through experience

Ras was excellent in his own end last night, tho.

Like every single dman in hockey, though, there were a couple of times where he was beat down low. It happens.

Both Sandin and Dermott were really good last game. None of them should come out but Dermott probably will to give Liljegren a turn now.

I noticed a few occasions when he picked up a loose puck in the d-zone, passed up the easier path to clear the zone and chose the harder option.

But overall I thought he played pretty well.

Not sure the reasoning behind this one. If it's just to give Liljegren a "turn", let's wait until there's reason to do so.

We apparently like Holl so much we kept him over Seattle's 1C. Doubtful it ever happens, but we can dream.

Nothing against McCann, but being Seattle's 1C is not really an accomplishment. They have the worst center depth in the league right now. Kerfoot would probably be their 1C if he was there right now.

I am not really sure that is his fault though. He has looked better than his role for years now, and has even looked good when he has been given a chance in the top 4, but he is not really given a consistent chance. Part of that is probably there only being so many minutes to go around, but we can afford to give him more than he has been getting under Keefe.

Pick whoever you want either Holl or Sandin but 1 of those 2 need to exit and Lily deserves a chance .. to me I would take out Sandin based strictly on last night on da bad beats where Dermy saved him defensively .. I thought Kampf would be better but he was on wrong side of puck on Habs goal last night after Muzzy got wiped out with a hit and he knew it right away (at least he was aware)

He needs to play games this year though and Holl isn't coming out of the lineup unless he's injured so unfortunately even if they play well we need to rotate guys through that bottom pair.

for me the reason would be it's a back to back tonight

if we have similar options it makes sense to use a fresh guy rather than a tired one. Data is pretty clear that players simply aren't as good playing consecutive nights so I'd like to see him come in for one of the guys on the bottom pair

but we've never really rotated like that as much as I'd like to see

This place is hilarious.

The bottom pair was awesome last night.

I'm sure they will also be awesome when Lilly is in.

We have many awesome defensemen.
I agree. I consider Dermott, Sandin, and Liljegren interchangeable. I’d like to see Lilly tonight but I’m ok with the other two playing another game and we’d be no worse off.

However, those three are not interchangeable with Muzzin, Brodie, or Rielly. We lose one of these guys and there would be a noticeable drop off.
