Friedman says he thinks Trotz may want to transition into being a GM. Says one thing he heard since last summer that Trotz may have a plan that starts with coaching then transitions into the gm role. He says its more complex than a regular coaching hire.
Hard no from me.

Maybe Dubas could hire Trotz as an assistant GM.. Lord knows we have enough of them.
If Trotz is smart, he'd reject an offer like that unless there's much more in writing under the hood so to speak. He's got to have control to be effective I'd think - no half measures.

I don’t really know if I trust a guy who wants that dual portfolio in 2022. Barely worked in the Pat Quinn era 2 decades ago.

Duel portfolio might work for Trotz so that the GM can make sure the coach has the players he needs and wants.

You should always hire the GM first so he can pick his own coach.

Babs and Dubas were like fire and water and so would Trotz and Dubas also. IMO

He didn't have the stone to fire Babcock either. Shanny did it last time, he can do it again.
I heard on the Fan590 this morning that Trotz previously made it known to teams around the league that he was not interested in coming back until December at the earliest.

My concern with Trotz direction is we’re looking at a celebrity, available coach, basically name hunting without thinking about the program.

If we are transitioning to a St. Louis Blues type program with a deeper balanced team, two way approach I don’t mind a Trotz led GM with a hand selected coach.

Dubas doesn’t seem to work well with others than his own rookie people. It’s clear there’s an issue there.

Even if Trotz was willing to come here, I'm not sure if his style is suitable to the players on our roster. We would need a roster overhaul in the off season before his impact could be measured.

You start Trotz as coach to evaluate the organization.
He can put a team identity into place and give everyone a chance to be part of that.

Then he can move to GM.

Trotz has a proven track record of success. I'm good with that. Who cares how much he costs.

Best case scenario he succeeds in lifting the team right away. Worst case, he gets half a season to see these guys up close and can make his recos about who to move out and in during the off-season.

If he does for us what he did for the Capitals and the Islanders, then he can be the GM too, why not.

Too early.

But sign me up all day long, every day of the week. You’ll never convince me in a million years he isn’t an upgrade, and that’s the only thing that should matter. Lucky he’s out there potentially.
He is also looking to be a GM in the next couple years. So kills two birds with one hire.
He could do both as there are enough assistance GM on the Leafs to keep the ship running. It may even save Shannys Job

He really is the perfect remedy, given our two headed best buddy scenario.

Duthie: With Sheldon Keefe on the hot seat, Barry Trotz's name comes up a lot in Toronto but Barry Trotz's name comes up a lot anywhere where a coach is on the hot seat... when are we likely to see Barry Trotz behind a bench again, Pierre?

Pierre LeBrun: Right, James, his name should come up, he's Barry Trotz, and he's going to be in demand when he's ready. This goes back to an interview I did with Barry Trotz last month where he said that he "wasn't quite ready yet" to put his name in the NHL hat. He still has some things to take care of in his personal life and my understanding is, coming in to today, that that is still the case and that he's not ready to come back to NHL life until probably December at the earliest so that's still a bit of a ways away. He will want to come back, just not right now so keep that in mind. In the meantime, speaking of Leaf coaches, they're still paying a former coach in Mike Babcock $5.8 million this season, the last year of that eight-year deal going back to 2015 they're paying him through June 30. I bring this up because if the Leafs do decide to make a coaching change at some point, consider that they're still paying Babcock, Sheldon Keefe makes just under $2 million, so that would be $7.8 million dollars that they'd be paying former coaches if they make a change, not to mention the salary of a new coach.

So we know MLSE has deep pockets, but it's something to consider.

Trotz was not fired by 3 teams. He walked from the Caps after winning the cup and not sure if he was simply not resigned by Nashville. Lou fired him because he feared losing Lane Lambert (sound familiar??).

Some fans on this board claim, Lou is a fool and the only good thing he did on the Island was to hire Trotz. The Isles success was all Trotz. Now that he is available, he sucks.

Yup. Has to be the Pat Quinn deal. Imagine Trotz with a Dubas roster? lol Dubas builds his teams like he's still building a Jr team.
