For a 25 year old, two way physical 60 goal scoring league MVP and rocket winner? Uhhh... Yeah they would. They'd easily get 2 firsts plus a top prospect at a minimum.

Marner himself would return a first + top prospect ++ and even more if we retained (in this scenario we are rebuilding anyways). Trading those two potentially could net us 4 firsts, multiple top prospects, and a pile of other assets.

So like I said, in that hypothetical, it is a massive kick start. Only problem is what if we draft guys like Slafkovsky instead of another Matthews. Hence we we do not want to trade these guys and want to win, it is a rare treat to have them
2 first for Matthews would be a ripoff, to be quite honest.

Trotz would need his own gm and a say in who plays on his leafs team. Once he is coach

^ This exactly. Dubas and Keefe are a package deal, If one goes so does the other. While Trotz is a great coaching option, I don't see any great GM options out there

Keefe system has a time and a place, unfortunately that time has passed.

The issue this year and the stats bear this out, the team is not getting shots from the dirty areas between the dots and the players are cheating too much offensively, this bears out in the eye test. Its the players not executing yes, but its the coach is not holding then accountable. Keefe is weak, you see this in his locker room Ra Ra Ra speeches, you see this in his actions when he takes Bunting off the top line to hold Bunting accountable for his cheating but lets Nylander cherry pick all day ... kinda sends a message that if your a star you can do what ever you want but if you are a lunch pail Larry, you better watch out. We know that Nylander and Tavares defensivly are a hot mess, we've known that for at least a season, so why keep them on the same line only to witness what was perhaps the worst shift in 30 years in Las Vegas, it was a Keystone cop thing.

You can go back and check out my posts after I think it was the 3rd game, I said this team looks like they have never played together before, that is on the coach. The coach controls ice time it's his job to hold them accountable. Anyone remember one of the first practice's in preseason where Keefe lost it really early into the practice? I thought jeeze he's F-ed if he has to give the riot act this early in the season, that my friends is foreshadowing... Keefe knows this team is done with him, we know they are done with him, Trotz knows they are done with him...
The team needs a coach who prevents them from really only showing up when their "Oh Shit" meter goes off. That's basically what happens. When they play a good team....they are worried about getting embarrassed to some extent and the Meter redlines. When they play a bottom feeder...complacency sets in and they don't really amp it up until they get behind and we get an "Oh shit we better start trying now" rise in effort and execution.

They have been allowed to be like that since the days of Babs...so is it Marner and Matthews leading that? I have no idea...but it's coming from deep within the top players for it not to be worrisome about their maturity and character.

Could the reason why they play one way vs a bad team and another way vs a good team have to do with good regular season teams tend to have great players, great players tend to take risks to score, maybe its easier for the stars on the Leafs to play vs good team because good teams have more risk in their game because they have players that take more risks?

It's possible I guess. I tend to think they are like me and I am a gigantic procrastinator in life. I really don't get moving until I have to...big character flaw that I could never fix...

In addition bad teams tend to trap and park and rush - Leafs kryptonite - as part of their everygame strategy to fill the skill gap.

If a coaching change is to come, my preference is Coach Q, then Barry.

But, I don't think it changes a thing. This core, as a group, does not have it. Just have to let it play out and be disappointed I guess. Change the coach, don't change the coach, whatever.

Quennville and Stan Bowman. People will forget about the past if they’re successful

"Hey guys, here's what we're going to do. We're going to play team defense like our lives depend on it. There's nothing deadlier than a stifling defensive team with numerous gamebreakers ready to pounce on your mistakes as you gamble with the puck. We'll all score less but we'll win more and have a higher probability of winning in the playoffs. The only trade off will be on your next contract but you'll probably be champions. Sounds worth it, doesn't it?"

Lol nice “subtle” shot at Montreal

Are the players struggling because of the coach? We have not looked good this year, I 100% agree.

People just need to make their minds up about if it is the coach or players.

I am told Keefe's systems suck, so I am assuming we need to ease up on the players, what player can play well in such a bad system?

But then I am told that the players aren't playing hard enough, so should we move onto coach #3 and just give the players a pass again?
It is a tricky balance……..does the coach look bad because of the players or are the players playing bad because the coach is incompetent. Sometimes it can be a bit of both.
Usually the coach is the easiest to change but you are right that it would be on to number 3 with this group. Tough questions ahead…….the first one being do you trust Shanny and Dubas to make these tough decisions

Then start making moves? Bringing in Trotz doesn’t absolve the players, it’s a recognition that the model has failed.
^ this.

I'm all for Trotz right now. I would like Trotz to have an objective look at the players and know who is the problem and who isn't. If he identifies a problem with a core player, we have time to make a trade in the summer (with an experienced GM, I would hope). If we don't do anything this year, bringing in Trotz, or whoever, for next September may be too late to make a move if the new coach identifies the problem personality(ies).

is there really all this silence from the media talking heads about Keefe’s job? I don’t see any speculation about his future or rumours that he could be axed. Friedman, Mac, Dregs….

Because just like Sockboy, if you speak out as a reporter against the regime you will lose access.

It seems like the players might be tuning Keefe out at this point, but I'm not sure Dubas has the stones to fire him.

I think it's less than they have tuned him out and more that message is confusing. Players want to know exactly what the expectations are, and with Keefe, it's unclear. Players want consistency, and Keefe is all over the place. Mixed messages and inconsistent approach doesn't work well.

He's just not a good coach.

Friedman says he thinks Trotz may want to transition into being a GM. Says one thing he heard since last summer that Trotz may have a plan that starts with coaching then transitions into the gm role. He says its more complex than a regular coaching hire.
