2m penalty 7 years from now, that's stopping some of you guys not wanting a elite goalie.

Come on guys, you have reimer and scrivens in net, this is a huge opportunity.

You're talking to us like we are actually in charge of the Leafs

Burke is not going to go after Luongo, unless he changed his mind over the off-season.

If Burke wanted an elite goaltender than he could have had Vokoun for a lot less than what Luongo would cost him.

Benefits of Vokoun over Luongo:

-Vokoun(36) is 3 years older than Luongo(33), which would give Reimer adequate time as a back-up learning from an elite goaltender, while still having a starting role at an age where or prospect will be in their prime.
- Vokoun only costed a 2nd round draft pick.
- Vokoun actually wanted to come to Toronto.
- Vokoun SV% .917 to Luongo SV% .918
- Vokoun salary 2 years @ 2 million/year.... Luongo $5.3million/10 years

This is just my opion, but unless Burke really wants Luongo than I think he's sitting out. Not saying that he shouldn't go after Luongo, but Vokoun was a better steal and Burke knows something about stealing (look at Calgary and Nashville).

It is more the issue of a $5.3 million cap hit when the salary cap is due to go down for next year and when there is no indication that it will rise the following year or by how much. That being said we are not all against getting Luongo, we just aren't comfortable paying too high a price for someone with that cap hit and with the potential penalties later on. If the price for him isn't that high then fine but if it is going to cost too many assets then those assets, his cap hit, and the potential penalties make him far less attractive an option.

It isn't so much the contract or cap hit but the absurd asking price that gives many of us pause.

It's not just 2 mil 7 years from now. If he retires 4 years early we'll be Royally effed for 4 years and for more than 2 mil. He has 3 good years left in him, tops.

Bernier anyone? would probably be more costly but at least we don't have to worry about a goalie for the next decade

This is what I've been saying all along. But wait for it in 3,2,1....

-Bernier has played less games than Reimer
-Burke has gone on the record saying that he isn't going to sign an unproven goaltender
-Bernier hasn't proven anything yet

Am I missing anything?

When he and Reimer were TC's goaltenders at the WC a couple of years ago,you could see the upgrade in skill when Bernier was in net. Yes I know that we shouldn't choose our goaltender based on a very short tourney because anyone can have a good few games. It wasn't that though, it was the skill that I saw there, I think we'll worth the risk.

I'm of the mindset that we do not need Loungo and his lengthy contract. We need a short term goalie.

Why not work a three way trade with moving Bozak to Vancouver and getting Theodore back here while Florida gets Luongo and fill in the rest of the peices.

Bruins fan who comes in peace. Living in Ontario I watch a lot of leafs games and personally would be shocked if BB doesn't make some kind of move for a goalie. I really don't get the hate for Bobby Lu.. I don't think TT is a good fix for many reasons ( mostly age but obviously many others. I just don't know where you are going to find a quality goalie ( which i believe Luongo still is ) at less then 5.3 and not have to give up a ton of assets. On a personal note I hope you don't pick up Luongo as I think he would drastically improve your team.
Good luck this season

Even though it's only a worry in a few years time, the new "over 6 years" contract rule will definitely scare away teams in acquiring Luongo.

He's obviously a good goaltender but I can't see many teams lining up to fork over core or good prospects for a player that may cost their cap space too much money for not even playing in a few years.

Should be interesting how it plays out though. With this new bit of information, I wouldn't be surprised to see Luongo stay with the Canucks for the year and see what happens in the summer. Perhaps it'll be a distraction but not one they can't handle.

I'm not sure if there's a "Plan B" for Burke in getting a veteran goaltender. I would suggest Backstrom out in Minny but that route is pretty unlikely as well. Perhaps a training camp tryout for someone like Dwayne Roloson wouldn't be a bad idea if Burke really wants to get a veteran in net. The problem is that without pre-season games, it would be hard to really assess his true value. Another avenue, which is even less likely, would be Jonas Hiller out in Anaheim. They have a couple young goaltenders that may be ready soon. They may need some cap space with Getzlaf AND Perry up for UFA this summer.

Might as well live or die with Reimer and Scrivens. Hope for a miracle from the hockey gods.

Hiller would be great, but:

Anaheim needs him just as much as the Leafs.
He's only 30 with plenty of life left.
The Ducks wouldn't want to do any trading with Toronto anytime soon. If they did they would probably want Gardiner.
Without Hiller Anaheim's defense would probably be exposed worse.

Gillis needs to go over new CBA...

To see how much he has to pay another team to take Luongo's contract. Each team has 2 buyouts, one this year and one they can save for next year.Gillis wants to go over the wording before he decides what he has to pay to have another team take his burdensome contract. It will be a package of picks..The new Cap/Cba has rendered him a negative value, accept it.

2.1 Mil for 3 years. Add to that there is no guarantee that the cap is dramatically increasing, as I understand the CBA the cap is tied to revenue, it's just not automatically increasing.

I'm not saying you 100% don't do it because of that but I would be offering less if I was Burke.

Luongo's contract reminds me of Future value financing on a car, which is almost criminal IMO.

Bernier isn't a clear enough upgrade on Reimer at this point.

We either get a clear upgrade or go with Reimer/Scrivens. We don't need to bring in anymore question marks.

I want Luongo. But I also don't want Burke to make a foolish move out of desperation.

If Luongo was a UFA right now, and he cost nothing but money, I wouldn't give him the contract he has now. Nobody would. So giving up anything of value for him is crazy.

If the Canucks can't find any trade partners, they'll probably just buy him out.

So if I'm Burke I either wait for Vancouver to buy him out or make them sweeten the pot. No way I'm doing them any favours by taking that albatross of their hands.

I would say his Canuk associations are stronger than his Leaf ones. This is an opportunity to stink it up over a shorter period of time and grab a top three pick. :D
