It's not the money. If it was only that, then it would be a no-brainer. The issue is 3-4 years from now, best case scenario, this contract will be weighing very heavy on this team. I rather give up another 1-2 assets for a goalie that can actually be here for 5 years+ (like Halak)

Personally, I would love to see the Leafs get Halak.

Luongo is a great regular season goalie who in the last 2 playoffs has looked average and mentally weak. When he chirped Thomas coming out of the net in the Stanley Cup playoffs he completely took a nose dive after that and has been pulled in the playoffs in back to back years.

Your nuts. Blame the goalie?? How about the nuckleheads score some goals in the playoffs lol, cant win every game 2-1. Dont blame the goalie for their woes in playoffs.

When has money or cap space ever been a problem for this team. Mike Komisarek? Pavel Kubina? Jeff Finger? We can afford to pay players a lot of money. We can afford to pay players a lot of money not to play hockey. I wish some fans would realize we're not the small market Phoenix Coyotes or something.

Pros:
1) His contract is long, but it is very reasonable for a goalie of his calibre. Try getting any other goalie with his stats for just over 5m. Good luck.

Halak has comparable stats (obviously over a shorter career) and his cap hit is only $3.75 per year.

2) He can get rattled in high-stress situations. Playoffs especially.

Toronto is as high stress as it gets and that is just during the regular season!

Luongo would bring Toronto stability in goal which you guys have lacked for some time.

No argument there. He is a great goalie, it is just his cap hit that bothers me. If there was no salary cap I wouldn't have any problem with getting him.

If Burke wants Toronto to succeed now, Luongo is the best option available.

Depends how other teams see the next year or two playing out salary cap wise. Some teams might need to shed money thus making other goalies available.

The only question in my mind is what it would take for Toronto to get him. Vancouver is not in the best bargaining position now that we've signed Schneider, and other GM's know this. There is also a limited amount of teams that require a #1 goalie. They know this too. Also, looking over the Toronto roster I really don't see a ton of players Vancouver would want or need... except maybe Bozak - but only because Kesler's return is unknown. Colborne could be a good player in 2-3 years but isn't what Vancouver needs right now. If Burke would be willing to let both go, I could live with that as a Vancouver fan.

Stop being reasonable or other Vancouver fans will disown you.

Cap isnt exactly a problem when you have about 15 million worth of terrible contracts coming off the books. Not to mention Reilly will take up a spot with only a 1 mil caphit next year.

We are more than fine financially. ZERO bad contracts on this team minus komi(which only has 1.5 years left). so one contract that is only a 5.4 cap hit isnt going to hurt us much.

Does anybody know much of Van's third tender Lack? Is he a viable option to backup Schneider or will they be expecting a one in return. Could you imagine if we sent Jussi and he turned into the next coming of Christ?

Edit: I know, a little paranoid.

I think a lot of Vancouver fans think he is capable of being a backup in the NHL now. Not sure how their coaches feel. His numbers have been good in the AHL, though they are down this season.

What kind of status is Ranger going to be if he signs with the Leafs? Regular old UFA? He wouldn't be ELC because he has played right?

I think the key for anyone, who is looking at Luongo, is not to overplay him. If they continue to have him play 65 + games a season, he won't last another 3 years.

Well that sure isn't going to be an issue this season!

Ranger is approaching 300 NHL games so there is no way he could be signed to an ELC.

UFA. He'd prob get a mil or 1.5m for a year or two if signed to an NHL contract.

I'd give him two years, huge potential and would save us alot of money.

What a score. Between him, Gunner, Gards and Rielly we save a ton on the back end next year and still have quality.

Lack is injured. He has had a groin problem since November and has been brought to Vancouver for treatment. The Canucks need a backup if Luongo is traded, either through trade or a FA.

Lack likely spends this year in the AHL. His contract is tailored for NHL action in '13-14.

If Luongo is traded we likely sign a one year vet backup like Ellis.

and yet people worry about one 5.4mil caphit from a near-elite goalie :shakehead

we're in fantastic shape financially.

Does he have #1 potential or is he career back up material?

He's huge (6'5) and dominated the AHL. Potential to be a top 10-15 starter.

Some fans who watch the AHL more than I do see him as the real deal, the next Pekke Rinne.

I am pretty far to the left and voted for Timmy.
The lols would be epic and he is a pretty good goalie. He can believe what he wants no matter how wrong or stupid.. Probably should keep it to himself though. lol
