Re: Luongo can handle the pressure in Toronto

Of course he can. We've set the bar so low. On his average night he still could help this team out.
------------

People are splitting hairs here. Lu is still a top goalie in this league, and he is also nowhere close to age 40. What is the problem? We don't want him because we'll never get 8-10 good years out of him? Are you kidding?

He's a gold medal winner & a cup finalist, but you just want someone else?!

The problem isn't his play but his contract.

The fact that there's unfounded fan discussion is enough of an indication that he wouldn't play well on the Leafs? Well, given the variety of opinions this board, I assume you could count out most players with that burden of proof.

The fact is it's a job. At all of our places of work there are likely a few bigoted people. He won a Conn Smythe and had some of the best years any goaltender has EVER had. Debate on whether Burke would feel comfortable morally in trading for him is short-sighted and pure speculation.

I'll give you some better reasons... Chiarielli, Julien and the Bruins brass came out and said that Thomas' side-show negatively affected the team this year. The Bruins were looking to trade Thomas because they believe that their team is better with Tuuka Rask between the pipes. Tim Thomas has already committed to taking the whole season off, regardless of a trade or amnesty etc. I can tell you that it is highly unlikely Burke or any NHL Gm for that matter would take a chance on a 40 year old goaltender who has been off for a full calendar year as their starter.

The side-show, that's a good reason.

Conflicted political opinion, no.

Like I said earlier in the thread, I don't think his views alone would prevent Burke or anyone else from signing him. There are surely lots of guys in the NHL, some in the Leafs organization even who share the same beliefs.

The problem is that Thomas is a loudmouth about it who alienates teammates(and anyone with a working brain), snubs presidents, and uses his fame as a soapbox for bronze-age ideals.

Conflicted political opinion, no.

Conflicted political opinion becomes a side-show when you ensure that everyone knows about it via social media and public displays of protest that involve your teamates and the organization that pays your bills.

A guy could be a racist, sexist homophobe who has extreme political views... but if he keeps it to himself and no one knows/is affected by it, of course its a non-issue.

If Burke and Thomas came together and agreed that politics would never be an issue, would you (or anyone) still be uncomfortable with the trade?

There on ice issues as well.

But Thomas giving you his word that politics wont be an issue is like Alex Semin giving you his word he'll try his hardest everynight.

It's a nice thought, but past history suggests its a pile of feces.

It's a limited history, but I mostly agree.

For me the Lou deal is off unless they take Komisarek. I don't even feel Komi is a "bad" player by any means, its just the salary and we have too many guys in the system.

Bozak + Komisarek + 3rd, best offer final offer.

re: Thomas, I don't care if he sleeps with Captain Kangaroo pants has a blanky and truly believes he is an alien in a man's body. He is the better option than Lou!

Sadly I think it will be Luongo with Reimer going to the Canucks.
I think this because the Canucks will need another goalie as Eddie Lach is injured long term.

I am not a Luongo hater at all. I think he will be good for the Leafs.
However I really like Reimer and would love to see him get another shot, but with a veteran there to support and mentor. I was always against the two young goalies fighting it out idea though.
I'd prefer to keep Reimer and deal Scrivens, but I just have this feeling Reimer will be gone. I hope I'm wrong though.

Hard to see Timothy Thomas even wanting to play in this type of a season. Would be a weird and surprising move if he came back after saying all those things after last season. Tim Thomas has been watching this farce and now for him to play in this league... I don't see that happening, not this season. He is laughing out loud somewhere.

For sure. Depending on how ratification goes and how much of what the league wanted it got will determine exactly how much of a deal breaker Luongo's contract is. However based on what I understand when it comes to the sentiments of Leafs management and how they've been setting themselves up for the new CBA I really do doubt Luongo would be coming here anytime in the foreseeable future. That doubt is only added to with the value Vancouver will be looking to get out of Luongo.

Just my two cents, but I don't see it happening. Shame, he's a great goalie.

I guess the other logical option would be waiting it out to see what happens with amnesty etc.

It won't happen this offseason, but the list of names available next season could be surprising.

A guy like Bryzgalov could easily become a victim of the new amnesty.

This isn't a situation where Thomas has sorta made it known about his views.

He's taken very strong stances on his views, even snubbing the President of the United States of America because of them.

If he's that stubborn, he's not going to back down about his views. If anything, going to Toronto would be a spring-board platform for even more idiotic rants from his crazy brain.

At least with Bryzgalov, it's space cadet banter. With Thomas it's hateful and anarchistic rhetoric.

Nevermind the Leafs, the NHL has no business with him in it.

Komisarek doesn't need to be included IMO. We have tons of cap flexibility in the short term, and we have 2 amnesties to use where he's the only obvious candidate. I'd rather clear a roster spot up front since we have too many spare parts.

If they are looking for a short term replacement for Kesler, I'd rather Connolly be the player going the other way instead of Bozak. It's time to see what Kadri/Frattin can do in the show and he's expiring so he still gives them the relief they need.

This is all assuming that we are taking the brunt of the long-term cap hit, though the suggestion by some that Kadri may be included leads me to believe that we might not be.

I think the NHL divorced him, I think he is a great goalie but the NHL is done with him as much as the bruins and the majority of people in the US who follow hockey I am sure. On the flip side of this I am sure a lot of players share at least similar views just they aren't dumb enough to spread them.

Backstrom may also be someone we should target -- he's in the last year of his contract and he'll be 35 this year. With Hackett and Harding in the fold, I wouldn't be surprised to see Minnesota willing to unload him.

Cody Franson + ?

gillis was on team1040, and he said that eddie lack is basically fine, just gonna double check his groin and will be ready for camp.

You think the Leafs are comfortable going with two inexperienced goalies..well I guess as the saying goes. Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. How many more years will we go without a legit goalie..We haven't made the damn playoffs for 8 years. it's getting ridiculous how cheap we've gotten in net.

I don't care about the next great European goalie (Gustavsson), or the next up and coming guy ( Scrivens, Reimer, Toskala etc.), I want a legit #1 goalie so we can have a team comfortable playing in the third period and not blowing games left right and center.

Which really needs to stop. His contract isn't as bad as people are making it out to be.

No one is making it out to be bad. A contract can't be considered good if you're hoping the Player retires before it ends.

So thats why we don't get him? Because people are going to be upset or hope that he retires before the contract is up? Why are people more worried about the contract then the contribution on the ice? Wow I'm shocked sometimes at my fellow Leaf fans, mind boggling the mindset we have sometimes. Anyway I don't want to hear people complaining when we don't make the playoffs, a lot of you don't want the contract so..then live with the results of having Reimer and Scrivens as our back-up. Just saying..
