Nice comment Friedman "so lets say he happily goes to Toronto (and who wouldn't happily go there?)"
WTF?

Everyone in the "media" loves poking fun at us or insulting us. It's annoying as hell, but to be expected I guess.

I want Luongo. Hell I want anyone other than Scrivens and Reimer heading into this season.

so the penalty is 2mil after 10 years, when the cap is 80mil.

So basically no penalty lol

Either of them please. Both more proven and better goalies then Reimer.

Let's just hope Burke doesn't blow up the rebuild again in acquiring this proven loser if it happens. I have faith even Burke wouldn't repeat the same mistake again...

Hey! For those that think he's going to be dealt here:

When do you think Lu will be here and for which players?

1. Before camp
2. Just after camp, but before the 1st game
3. In 2 weeks time

Which
One?

You mean in 7 years, highly doubt the cap will be 80 mil.

And if he decides to retire early...like say 40! It only gets worse.

if he retires the canucks get the cap hit , not the leafs no?

To wit, part 2: If Luongo were to play the next seven years of his deal in Toronto before retiring, the Leafs would be paying him $43.666 million in salary but only counting $37.31 million against the cap over those seven years, a cap savings of $6.356 million. So if Luongo retires with three years left on his deal (because his salary falls to $1.618 million in the 10th year and then $1 million in the last two years of the deal), the Leafs would get charged that $6.356 million on their cap spread evenly over the remaining three years of his deal.

As for Toronto, the Maple Leafs will pay Luongo $43,666,000. (I'm not pro-rating this year's lockout-infected salary. Going for the easy math here). The total cap hit for those seven seasons is $37,333,331. The difference is $6,332,669. Divide it by the three unused years in Luongo's contract, and the penalty per season is $2,111,890 -- slightly larger than Vancouver's.

Well, 2 million cap hit isn't bad, depending on the health of the league and the cap at that point in time.

I don't get all these people worrying about contracts and $ commitments... who cares? I wan't the best team possible, you worry about those issues when they arise.

If the current group the leafs have is the one they start the season with I am going to be pretty disappointed.

It's hilarious how people are perfectly content passing on great players for the stupidest of reasons.

True, but take into consideration the cost of acquiring Luongo vs Thomas.

I'm an advocate for getting Luongo (hence I voted him in this poll) but not at the price some Canucks fans are asking.

I'd be willing to give up a good amount for him but not to gut the team for him. This cap recapture stuff isn't a big deal but it certainly doesn't help Luongo's value.

I'll guess well see what happens. I'm hoping he gets dealt here for a reasonable price. If not, a goalie like Thomas is a good backup scenario while we give Reimer the reigns. Certainly any veteran backup thrown in the mix would be preferable to Reimer/Scrivens since that is a major roll of the dice.

Is anyone listening to Norm Rumack right now? He seems to have this agenda that bringing Lu to TO would be a mistake because Florida is his apparent first choice. Keeps harping on the point that would we as Leaf fans want a guy whose first choice is another team?

I really don't get this mentality as the NHL is a business and the players are essentially employees of said business. Not every player has their choice of where they want to play any more than the average joe doesn't get to choose any job he wants. That doesn't mean the player or joe isn't going to perform to the best of his abilities while there. It all comes down to character and integrity - two things I believe Robert possesses. I'm sure he just wants to win in a starters role.

Has the league given any indication yet as to when teams will be allowed to sign free agents and trade players? I think that after the last lockout it was allowed to day the CBA was ratified but honestly cannot remember. I'm wondering if it would be the same this time or if they will pick a day later this week?

Given the new CBA, isn't Luongo potentially even more expensive to trade for than he was before the new deal? Don't want either of these guys.
