Player Discussion Tim Stützle - (C) - Part VI

Hey guys, real question does anyone remember that Stutzle vs. Kaprizov thread a few years ago? Some people were like Stu is not even comparable to Kaprizov. Which was fair given that he was like 18 and Kap was 23.

Its funny because I remember some people were like let's see what Stü looks like at 23 too before we compare... well they are pretty comparable now and it wasn't even necessary to wait until Stu turned 23.

Stu 18th in NHL 64 GP and 76 pts 34g 42A
Kaprizov 20th 65GP 74 Pts 39g 35A

As if he were in those organizations he would be buried with bottom 6 minutes and no PP time. To this day there are some that still think that. I don't know if it is in inability to recognize talent or just cope.

I think Stutzle is doing so well because his talent is greater than Lafrenniere and Byfield. I suspect he is getting more PP time than those two and that contributes to his scoring stats. Some fans of those teams are home town fanboys who cannot agree that another team selected a better player with a lower draft pick and their team made a mistake in judgement. Some posters on this sight have the same affliction. :)

His hands are better.
His edges are better.
Not sure about straight line speed but he plays faster
He can skate rings around either one of them with or without the puck.
His desire is off the charts ..

His progression has been insane.

That is the biggest reason I don't think I can actually say his success is solely linked to opportunity. Had he gone to different team and faced the "earn it" treatment, I think he would rise to challenge because of his desire/compete level. He's got that fire in him. I hope it translates into more wins next season. I also hope he works on his shooting more over the summer. His shot has gotten better, but he can still improve more. Specifically in accuracy/placement as the power might not be a rocket, but it is more than enough with great placement. Also faceoffs. And strength. He doesn't need to be a tank, but he can have Mackinnon strength on his skates.
 
Stutzle the only player in Calder voting with their age starting with a 1.

They really need to fix criteria of this award. Max age should be starting the year at 21.

It's a very small sample size, so there is a good chance it's just a fluke, but his faceoff % has been quite good recently.
In March so far it's at 55% I believe.

I would not be surprised if he became at least solid at the dot within the next couple of seasons. A lot of his problems in that area were because of shoulder injuries.

77 pts on the season 35 goals. If you told me this was his peak when we drafted him i would have been super happy that’s a #1C.

The fact that he is only 21 and in his third season, we might be watching a future hall of famer here

Kevin Lowe is in the Hall of Fame.


All Tim has to do is play another 11 or so seasons and he's a lock.

Unless they took his assist away on Brady's goal tonight, he should be at 78 points :)

Why does it feel like he doesn't get much recognition around the league for what he's done in the last 80+ games?

He's not really getting bad mouthed or downplayed by anyone, but I feel like the hockey world isn't nearly as enamored with him as they should be. Anyone who was on the fence about his potential as a superstar needs should no longer be there anymore.

I think he feels like one of those players that's been around longer than they actually have been. And what he's doing in his D+3 year is going right over the heads of most people. He's still on his ELC and that is just nuts on every level.

Point being is that he's clearly the most talented player on the ice most nights according to the eye test. He's extremely hard not to notice. And his stats back up what your eyes are telling you, that he really is that special of player. Like he is getting close to being a franchise level player if he isn't already.

This is his coming out party. If he keeps going into next season and into a playoffs he will get his due

Unless you play for a big market or playoff team where a lot more people are watching it takes time

I know this is probably the right answer, but my god... he didn't just kick down the door over the last year, he blew through it with a friggin bazooka.

But then guys like Jack Hughes seemed to generate a lot more chatter last year during his own breakout season, which is now less impressive than what Stutzle has done in his D+3 imo. And he's also on a small market team. Or like how Aho on the canes was getting heaps of praise in his D+4 season when he first broke the PPG barrier.

Stu just seems to be having the most quiet and incredible D+3 years of any superstar in recent memory. Imo. What he's done at his age is much more impressive than what Tage Thompson has done over the same amount of time, but you would never know about it if you didn't follow the Sens closely.
