I had quite a laugh remembering this one after Ian's article today. Rob Blake and Co must have ridiculous standards.

I think my favourite part of the article is this one:

"Though he might not ever score as many points as Stutzle, there is so much more to the game than just points. What about faceoffs? What about defense and having a two-way game? How about driving the top power play unit? Competitiveness? Hockey IQ?"

I get the point about faceoffs, and to an extent, at the time, maybe even the defense and two-way game thing, but the last three were ridiculous even at the time.
  • Driving the top power play unit: Stützle had spent the past season running and driving the top power play unit of a pro team in a decent pro league at 17/18 years old. But i guess that's nothing special.
  • Competitiveness: Seriously? Doubting Stützle's competitiveness is like doubting McDavid's skating ability.
  • Hockey IQ: I honestly don't know if Byfield has the edge here or not, but Tim is certainly not lacking in this area.

I think Timmy will still need G's help on draws this year.
He loves playing with him too listen to his interview on 32 thoughts. Great mentor for Stutzle. Giroux is a former superstar Hart level player. Perfect guy to groom and lead Stutzle. They have wicked chemistry already. To me they have to play together more than any combination. And yes for faceoffs and D zone Giroux is perfect. Lefty righty, they work well together. I like the idea of trying Tarasenko with them.

once a player quivers. You are finished.

A quiver is fear.

In Marner's case, go back and see the game.

Harry Kane has guided England to some level of success but not great, Often misses key moments. No success at the club level. Fear.

Messi, no fear, no pressure. Has won everything that can be won.

Harry Kane is not a ball transporter. An excellent player, hard on a ball. But Ukraine for example had a ball transporter in Mudryk. Who played injured. And it was enough to constantly pressure much better England. In hockey puck transporters are rare finds, in football a ball transporter as Messi comes every 25 years. And Messi is a standard now. In hockey now, scouts on any level are paying a close attention to that skill. Puck transporters - offence or defence will go very, very high in a draft order. And they went high already in the last few years. That's why I would still draft Jamie Drysdale over Jack Sanderson. Because not the defence and goalies win Stanley Cups now. But the puck transporters and the transition game will win you the cup. In puck transporter we have only Stutzle and somehow Chabot. We need one more at least. We went to the Cup finals in the past, because Alfredsson was transporting the puck and Spezza was not bad at it either.

Sanderson moves the puck really well, just like Drysdale, but with much, much better defence. I like Drysdale and I hope he has fully recovered from his injury. But the Sens hit a home run with Sanderson.

I agree about the importance of puck carrying/transporting in today's game - heck we had a generational talent at the backend once in terms of puck moving ability in Erik Karlsson.

Sanderson is not Karlsson, but he is a very balanced 2-way guy in the making. Trending towards being one of the best blueliners the Sens have had in the system.

I wanted Sanderson at the draft , and would still take him over Drysdale.

Blake has done a lot of good for the Kings, but passing up Stutzle for Byfield in part because of "culture" is a fireable offense and proof that the player-to-management pipeline doesn't result in the cream rising to the top, so to speak.

As our fearless leader once said, Stutzle has good character...

...for a European.

LA is basically the NYR of the West, so many of their highly touted prospects-Byfield, Turcotte, Bjornfot, Kupari-have had stunted development.

Let's not act like the SENS didn't take Brady because he was a 'primary culture' guy. Dumb phraseology but I don't think its that hard to understand.

A quiver is fear.

In Marner's case, go back and see the game.. It was after he shot the puck over the boards and took a 2 minute penalty.

Pressure means that you err of the side of caution. If you are playing soccer, you shoot the ball a tad slower and more in the middle of the net.. you play it safe. Thomas Muller Germany 2010 world cup.. caused elimination in the Semi finals. He went on to win in 2014.. Has enjoyed tremendous success at the club level.

Fear means you miss and miss badly.. you sky the ball above the net or way wide.. Baggio. Marner and the puck

quiver means you never win, fear means you can hurt your team.

Harry Kane has guided England to some level of success but not great, Often misses key moments. No success at the club level. Fear.

Messi, no fear, no pressure. Has won everything that can be won.
No offence but this is moronic.

Byfield will most likely be a primary culture guy, while Stutzle projects as a secondary culture guy.

what the f*** does that even mean, man lol
It means they went through their Spotify play lists and Byfield listens to Johan Sebastian Bach, while Stützle apparently left out Johan when he did the search and ended up with plain old Sebastian Bach belting out some classic skid rowe tunes.

well, you have your primary culture and then right after that, you have your secondary culture.

What's not to understand. Unsaid of course, is after that you have your tertiary culture guy, but that is an entire other kettle of fish.

wake me up when Toronto wins a cup.

with 10 seconds in yesterday's NY liberty, Washington Mystics game.. Score tied, Washington has the ball out of bounds with 11 seconds left.. See the inbounders face.. quiver.

She launches the inbound pass... misses her team-mate.. Game goes into overtime.

NY wins, wins the series 2-0... Washington gone.

Quiver = losing.

Let me know when the parade is: I will set up a chair on Young street.....

don't cross conversations.

Kane sends penalty kicks flying over the goalpost.. He misses near in shots.. quiver... fear.

Some players respond well, others do not.

there is: Pressure, Fear and performance

Pressure is Muller (Bayren and Germany)....
2010 wide open, soft shot at Spain's goalie.. Germany loses game and is out
ditto for 2018 and 2022.. both times he missed..
at the club level he does well, but is careful to be an assist man, so he is not burdened with goal scoring.
So pressure makes him tense up. He softens his shot and shoots at the midile of the net.

Performance: Messi... no need for explanation.. Hits everything, scores everything, wins everything... ergo Michael Jordan, Tom Brady, Sidney Crosby

Fear: Kane, Baggio, Marner.. Wide misses, choking.

How a player plays, versus his performance are different.. Even a defensive defensemen can choke.. He panics, takes a penalty, or is caught flat footed, etc. choke..

Patrick Maroon.. little offensive skill.. come playoffs, he shines. No choke.

Watch a replay of yesterday's NY liberty, Washington Mystics game.. see the last 12 seconds... Fear/Choke...goodbye series.
