Tim Murray Signs Contract Extension

Tim Murray doesn't think his decisions through, guys. HF told me so just tonight.

TBH, though. 5 years for Moulson was a bit much. He should have offered more per year for a shorter term. Now he's got a dead weight winger that they have to showcase on the PP just to get a whiff at the net. On top of which is going to be a cap crusher when Eichel and Reinhart are due for a post-ELC deal.

Frankly, a bit surprised he got this after what I thought was a pretty poor summer. He signed a player to a big deal that we will likely be an anchor by Year 4. Beyond swapping out Kulikov for Pysyk he failed to adequately address the blueline. Further, he didn't build sufficient forward depth such that Moulson, Des, Fasching, et al. will have far too big a role, and we are unprepared to withstand inevitable injuries. Quite simply, I don't think he's done a good enough job of roster building.

I find much of the love for him to be a bit over the top. He is aggressive and a great interview, though, so he has that going for him.

I love listening to Tim Murray as a person, but as a GM he hasn't been great. The ROR trade was great, but moving out the amount of prospects he did is going to hurt us.

Sensible, I guess. Would have preferred to see results first

IIRC he was give a 3+ yr contract? That would mean 16/17 would be the final year with him hired mid 13/14 season.

Buffalo had been gutted so it takes longer to turn things with the bottom being end of 14/15 season.around.

What do you think he should have done ???

He made a bunch of moves the year before. He brings in a winger and trades a RHD for a lhd.

He has a couple og young goalies in his system so he brings in Nissan as back up.

I have a feeling he likely had talk of an Ennis trade that was held up due to him being injuried.

As you see right now he is about !2M under the cap so it's hard to bring in high salaried players. That likely waits till February where a team could retain what's left this season making them in essence free this year.

Sure it's nice to have deeper veteran depth but vets cost money.

The only issue I have with Murray is the hiring of Bylsma. I expect him to correct that mistake some time within the next 81 games.

Murray is human.

I can understand the thought process around his biggest mistakes (Bylsma, Kane trade, FA signings like Franson & Moulson).

With his contract set to expire after this season, I completely understand Murray getting an extension.

This team isn't a finished product. But, it's in a better place now than it was when he took over.

If he had a Regier like personality, and the hockey moves stayed the same, you'd see much less love for him. People love the personality and the stark difference from Regier. As for hockey decisions, he's been positively mediocre at best.

If I was going to mention a biggest mistake outside of Bylsma, it's clearly the Myers trade. I was a huge Myers fan and approved of the trade. It's been a disaster.

But, people forget how risk averse and infuriating Darcy was. Aggressive management is going to have strikeouts and homers... I'm fine with that.

The blueline needs a lot of work still. But this forward core he's built... it's very good. And the lack of scoring, is a product of a terrible system.

The jury's still out on him as far as I'm concerned. I like his boldness and that he seems to have a vision for the team, but he's taken a lot of risks along the way. The risk is necessary to build a contender, but if too many of them fall flat, we'll be set back 5 more years at least. The Myers trade is already looking like a complete flop.

I don't think people forget how conservative Darcy was, I think they want everything fixed yesterday and are a bit unrealistic about it all.

Especially given the salary cap.

The one good thing with Murray is that even with guys he's overpaid, most are on deals that are short enough to not really cause major cap issues.

For me, you want Chicago cap issues where the problem is having a few elite guys that eat up a bunch of cap and having to manage the rest of the roster around those elite guys.

Moulson and Franson are his only mistakes and we have staple players like Larrson and ROR and Okposo that wouldn't have happened without him. His drafts have been fine, it's not his fault they lost lotteries. He had almost nothing to work with when he started and we have a pretty good 23 man roster when healthy. You can't expect to have depth immediately as well, especially when all your first round picks year after year are already on the team. Remeber Darcy's first round picks? I don't, they never made the team. That's step 2 and we haven't gotten there yet.

This.

What has he done except for gloriously sucking.

Look at the roster and cap situation the day he took over and look at what they have now.

That's why he got an extension.

Using your logic, Babcock should have been fired after last season because the Leafs had the worst record in the entire league.

The jury is still out on this guy, but I probably do think he deserves more than just the end of this season to show what he can do. Every GM makes bad trades, or brings in the wrong coach - the key is how you adjust. Murray does not seem like the kind of guy that is inflexible or will change course if something is not working. Too early to tell with the maturity of this product right now.

Agreed. I'm fully on board with Murray, the direction he's taken the team, the aggressive moves he's made (good and bad)... but if he doesn't recognize Bylsma was a mistake... I will begin to lose confidence.

I don't need a good NHL system to produce the scoring you seem to require to judge talent.

This. Even last night missing two of your top 3 or 4 forwards, and ROR clearly laboring, they have talent up front.

Even with garbage offensive flow, structure and lineups, they still hit multiple bars, a breakaway and samson just missed on a trickle.

The people going off on this tank crap are ridiculous. This is what a borderline playoff team looks like when devastated by injuries.
