I keep seeing anecdotal stories and comments regarding a movement to "stop tipping". I hope that never comes to fruition.
The difference in service I receive when the server knows they going to be tipped well is night and day.
A pet peeve of mind is having an empty glass while in the middle of my meal.... it's happened a couple of times where I completed my meal without a drink and a server nowhere to found....there is no better way to ruin a dinning experience than that right there.
Service is an art and since the pandemic the service has been going progressively down hill...I suspect part of the push for a non-tipping culture is a response to tips being lower....I've seen articles blaming inflation, the economy, a normalization from a pandemic bump...no the service sucks everywhere and that is why the tips are down! I have never seen worse service than I have over the last year or so and I dine out a lot. I could only imagine how bad the service would become with no incentive of a tip and standardized compensation.
You already see it in places that "pool" tips. Those places, unless very small quaint establishments, always have shoddy service. There's always one or two who cares and 4 who don't.
Service has gotten so bad over the last year I question whether casual dinning is even worth it...if I can eat at the bar, I often chose that because bartenders almost always provide good service in comparison to an average server these days.
Higher end dining always has better service but that's not what I'm talking about.
So yeah, "let's do away with tipping". Because I don't care about providing good service and still want to be paid.
