Seems my laptop just went belly up. So I’ll need to get a new one.

I don’t use it for much aside for web surfing.

Any thoughts on buying a refurbished Mac? Stumbled upon a website (macofalltrades) and seems i can get something for around $600. 16gb mem. 500 gig storage.

If all you're using it for is to surf the web why not save the money and just use your phone?

The problem with Macs is they semi-recently moved to an in-house chip. I'd want to get a MacBook with the M1 chip if the discount Is good enough. Traditionally, I found that used Macs were not a great bargain but the price you are quoting sounds great if it has the M1 chip.

Popped into a small private pc repair shop which ive bought a computer from in the past.

Walked out with a refurbished hp for $175.
8gb mem. 1 terra of storage

I don’t need all the storage and i would have preferred 16gb memory but whatever, it’ll be an upgrade over what ive been using.

You can’t beat that price. It’s almost disposable at that price. Can you have them put in another 8gb? I agree you really need 16 in todays world

Yeah unless you're doing something that requires Windows specifically (Though you can pretty easily setup a Mac to dual-boot Windows) and / or can't afford it (Though you can get the previous year's Macs on sale / refurbished pretty easily too), I kinda always recommend Macs. Or Chromebooks if all you're doing is surfing the web. Chromebooks are hella good for that. I only recommend Windows for people who are like, I want to game. That's the only reason my main desktop is Windows.

I have seven computers in this room with me (Not counting cell phones and tablets) and not one of them will ever get Windows 11. Well, maybe my work laptop will, but that's because that's not my call.

Nah, I asked him, but I guess the computer only has enough slots for 8gb?

Now that I've figured out how to stream youtube through my TV I really don't need a lot of memory on my laptop. Yeah would be nice, but not that big a deal.

As long as you just use it for streaming and email type stuff it’s fine .

It's really this board, a rutgers board, and Etrade.

Little bit of email.

Oh, and since February Ukraine news.

Everything else I do on my phone, or more recently TV.

Any setting recommendations for a newly purchased refurbished HP?

-Make sure Microsoft Defender is on and set to auto-update (Unless you trust yourself to check for updates occasionally). Microsoft Defender Antivirus in Windows

-Download a different browser to use besides Edge. Popular options include Chrome (Google Chrome - Download the Fast, Secure Browser from Google) and Firefox (Download the fastest Firefox ever). I'd lean towards Firefox, but preference for one over the other is personal. Edge is fine too, I prefer Firefox and Chrome over it though.

-Once you have one of those browsers, install a few extensions. (Chrome: Chrome Web Store, Firefox: Add-ons for Firefox (en-US)). Some that I like:
uBlock Origin: Insanely good ad-blocker. Makes surfing the web so much better (And safer)
Privacy Badger: Blocks tracking elements on websites.
(You should use a password manager and have that extension installed on your browser as well)

-Install a few good free software options. I like Foxit for reading PDFs (Free PDF Reader & Viewer - Online Download | Foxit Software)

This is the team thread, not the dunk on and attack posters thread. You won’t find that thread anywhere on HF btw

Besides you guys should be enjoying things atm, without needing validation from critics
What do you mean, everyone loved this poster, I didn't see anyone attacking it.

First Sabbath now the Dead? You are really rocking and rolling lately. Great work.....as is your usual.
*whispers* I don’t like The Grateful Dead even a little, but the poster is from a fancy cover band of theirs. *ducks away*

Listened to Sabbath since I got the (low quality) cassette tapes from Columbia Music Club way way back in the day.
