While I'm as excited as ever I can understand how some fans wouldn't be.

And I can also understand why.

The Leafs have been to the playoffs seven years in a row. They failed spectacularly every time. Hard to get worked up when you've been made the fool so often already.

Everyone is counting on some combination of Boston and Tampa taking big steps back.

Without Buffalo and Ottawa taking big steps forward. I'm not buying it. Gotta think the guys in Buffalo and Ottawa are hungry.

Once either of those teams make the playoffs look out.

Because, whoa Nelly, all bets are off at that point. Meanwhile our lovable Leafs losers keep Leafing along. Regular season heroics and postseason flops.

I can't blame anyone for not being excited about that.

I'm not afarid of one team that hasn't made the playoffs in 6 years, and another that hasn't made the playoffs in 12 years.

Do you know how long I have heard people like you say some variation of "look out for the sabres."

About a decade, about 10 of the 12 years they have missed the playoffs.

I know it the grand scheme of things it means nothing but It's a gave day and I can't wait for puck drop

You're probably right.

Remember when the Leafs missed for all those years. Then they drafted MNM and everyone was like "just wait until they get into the playoffs". Lol... Seven years later and we're all still waiting for them to actually do something in the playoffs now that they've gotten there.

Oh well, there's always next year, right?

Go Leafs Go.

Agreed. Those teams getting to the playoffs is a successful season. They are just happy to be there at that point. Learning experience, all of that.

If the Leafs lost to the Sabres or Sens in round 1, it would be the most alarming loss of this core IMO. We're the better, more experienced team with the most to lose if we don't go deep. Neither of those teams out skill us, which would mean they outworked us.

I don't think we need to be concerned with all that. If it happens big changes are coming most likely with Shanny going and then a core change.

Yes I do remember, I also remember they acquired a #1 goalie named Freddy Andersen which the Sens don't have, and the Sabres have never done, or even attempted in 12 years, no Matt Murray saying no to them does not count

Expectations very low, only so much shuffling a GM can do without moving a core piece, we're still in cap hell at the end of the day.

I do like the Bertuzzi and Domi additions, and Klingberg finally gets Rielly off PP1. The D is somehow worse overall though and big question marks in goal.

The one positive is I don't see one standout favourite in the East, it's pretty wide open.

What fans don't like to admit is that hockey is a sport (when compared to all the other major sports) that is the most likely to produce upsets in the playoffs. A string of great goaltending (for instance) can take a mediocre team pretty far. People unfairly blame the captain, the lack of goal scoring, leadership, personale, coaching, toughness, defense, etc.

That is why we tune in every year. We too like to see playoff upsets (SJ vs DET 1994 was a good one). That is why those of us that are not completely jaded are back every season to cheer on our team...

I am, as always, thoroughly excited about the new season.

I'm not excessively optimistic about our chances of success in the playoff.

But, as usual, I expect to thoroughly enjoy most of our regular season games, and thoroughly stress out during most of our playoff games.

And I can almost guarantee that I will continue to bemoan the Tavares signing, curse the several Dubas stupidities, and point out various mistakes by players, coaches, management, and posters.

This team can go on a run
if they get lucky

How so? They can't afford to re-sign anyone other than the stars and single-year, depth players. Everyone in between walks at free agency.

And "make it work" is debatable. As in, they've won one round in 7 years so no, it's not "working".

Again, I wouldn't say that's quite true.

A number of guys who left in free agency, Hyman, Barrie, Holl, Kerfoot, ect COULD have been extended. The team has chosen to spend money elsewhere

I don't think Pageau would cost anything but salary. His contract is awful.

He makes $5 million to be elite in the dot, score 40 points, play a solid checking game, kill penalties and be a top notch shorthanded threat.

What's awful about that?

He'd be an outstanding edition to any team looking to shore up their bottom six with an excellent third line center. If the Leafs were able to pick him up at the deadline, it would be a great move.

Everything that you just said indicates that you haven't really watched him play the last two seasons. He has never recovered from the hand/wrist injury he suffered against Tampa a couple of years ago. He is mostly ineffective at this point. Lou will never trade him because Lou has turned into a mostly uncreative, stale GM, but most islanders fans would kill to dump that salary.

Five million is a fairly hefty price tag of s caphit for that type of middle tier/class of player to begin with in today's NHL, and that's not getting into the particulars of his game.

The team is always just different enough to think that something might be different. Bertuzzi and Domi (especially Bert if hes healthy) are significant adds. We need JT to hold on for atleast one more year and find a way to add one or two top 4 d for the playoffs.

We're currently paying more than double that for a worse player.

Anyone who has an active account on a hockey forum is lying when they say they are not excited about the upcoming season. Delete your account and start playing video games or something if you truly are.

I didn't post here for most of the summer because I was playing Baldur's Gate 3. I didn't make announcement about it because it wasn't that important.

They always find a way to make it work…….just not very well in the playoffs.
For the record any team that has their cap structured like we do is in cap hell……sadly we are the only ones
