Are you claiming Pageau is a better player than JT right now? If so, I do not agree.
Oops - mea culpa. I thought we were talking about Stamkos.

This is literally absurd. I'm not even sure how to react to someone comparing Pageau to Tavares. These two players shouldn't be referenced in the same conversation. Tavares at $11 million is infinitely better value than Pageau at $5 million.
As above. My mistake.

What fans don't like to admit is that hockey is a sport (when compared to all the other major sports) that is the most likely to produce upsets in the playoffs. A string of great goaltending (for instance) can take a mediocre team pretty. People unfairly blame the captain, the lack of goal scoring, leadership, personale, coaching, toughness, defense, etc.

That is why we tune in every year. We too like to see playoff upsets (SJ vs DET 1994 was a good one). That is why those of us that are not completely jaded are back every season to cheer on our team...

Since 1993 and the Bettman reign beginning every Canadian team has been upset by an American franchise every year...EVERY YEAR....hmmmm
It appears that upsets are a phenomenon of US TV ratings.
Even when the Raptors won, they were put back in their place very quickly. When TFC won, they were quickly destroyed,
Coincidence, Me thinks not. 😏

I really hope for you that this is a joke.

If it's not a joke then you might want to accept that complex things exist. You don't have to let it end there though. You can do research and educate yourself.

I am, as always, thoroughly excited about the new season.

I'm not excessively optimistic about our chances of success in the playoff.

But, as usual, I expect to thoroughly enjoy most of our regular season games, and thoroughly stress out during most of our playoff games.

And I can almost guarantee that I will continue to bemoan the Tavares signing, curse the several Dubas stupidities, and point out various mistakes by players, coaches, management, and posters.
Do I make mistakes?

Raptors put in their place? If the NBA did not want a Canadian franchise potentially winning and being successful, they wouldn’t have granted a franchise to Toronto. It’s not like Toronto put a gun to their heads and forced a team to be born into the NBA. There is no conspiracy.

All this conspiracy stuff has always been stupid. It's just an easy way to justify losing without having to admit that maybe your team just isn't good enough.

Five million is a fairly hefty price tag of s caphit for that type of middle tier/class of player to begin with in today's NHL, and that's not getting into the particulars of his game.

That's is clearly the difference in our take on this: I don't think he's anywhere near the "middle tier" for what he does. I would put him very near the top of the tier of checking/face off/penalty killing forwards.

The pre-injury Pageau, yes. Post-injury Pageau is unfortunately a completely different player. His game has fallen off a cliff because he can barely handle the puck or shoot anymore.

That must explain why he's plummeted from a career-best 43 point season in 2015-16 all the way down to an embarrassing 40-point season last year.

Poor Islanders, now that he's fallen off a cliff and unable to handle the puck and shoot the puck, they were forced to shell out $5 million to Pageau last season to watch him stumble to a career-best point per game total.

The funniest part of all of this is this: You actually took the time to respond to my post and tell me that I clearly hadn't seen him play the last two seasons! Too funny.

I get it, you see the points and come to that conclusion. Totally understand. But he really isn't the same player anymore. Honestly, go to the Islanders board and ask them. This guy was hugely underrated when the Islanders acquired him, and he was one of their best players in the two runs they had before the injury. But he is so much less effective at this point. A bunch of extra assists don't change that. He can no longer do things with the puck that he used to be able to do because of the injury.

You can't win this, the stats simply don't back you up.

Granted stats aren't always everything, if they were then the eye test and the advanced stats and would always line up and they very, VERY do not.

But in this case the stats are so against you that you can't possibly win

Why would anyone not be 'thoroughly unexcited' about Pageau?

I mean, there is the fact that I have watched every Islanders' game for the last couple of decades or so (so many Tavares games), including every single one of Pageau's games as an Islander.

On edit: to be clear, I'm not saying that Pageau is a bad player. The issue is that he just doesn't play to his salary anymore. If he was on the last year of his deal, I agree that he would be a good pickup for just about any team, but with two extra years on his contract his salary is going to be a problem. He just hasn't been able to be as effective as he was prior to the hand surgery. Had he been healthy at the end of that Tampa series, there is an argument that says the Islanders could have beaten Tampa on gone to the Cup final that year. At this point, the Islanders are closer to the AHL cup final than they are to the NHL cup final.

I really hope for you that this is a joke.

If it's not a joke then you might want to accept that complex things exist. You don't have to let it end there though. You can do research and educate yourself.
Start by researching Kerry Fraser.

So you’re saying Bettman isn’t pro-American?

I'm only saying that those who don't want anything complex in their life reach for conspiracy theories to explain things.
Yes, you’re right, it’s only my opinion. I have absolutely no proof that he is against Canadian teams. It’s mostly that I can’t stand him. He seems very arrogant and acts like he’s smarter than everybody else.

Sounds very similar to the stuff lowly educated folks say about current politicians when espousing conspiracy theories like WEF 5G etc.
Hint: seeing as he’s a lawyer and has ran a sports league for 30 years and was #2 in the NBA during its 80-90’s boom under stern I’m gonna guess that Gary is in fact smarter than most people he interacts with, especially in the media which is where you’re insight to him comes mostly comes from. (Not saying any one specifically just general of course)

Are you not thinking just a bit that US TV ratings is imperative. Is Bettmans job to make money or promote fair play.
