Just don't see what's going to be different this year. Same coach, same core, pretty minor changes with some good names coming in and some good names going out. I was hoping for something that shakes things up after so many disappointing playoffs' but I don't see it.
Well at least we have a competent GM now and its going to take time to undo the mistakes of the past, rebuild the prospect pool and reshape the team into a true competitive winner. .

I'm also not very excited until we can get out of Cap Hell and we get a real coach.

But every season does bring some new hope even if change is limited and optimism is low for ultimate success.

They aren't going to rebuild the prospect pool as long as Auston Matthews is a Leaf.

It won't be priority anyway

3 days until the first pre season game.

And the 3rd day is almost over.

It's nearly 2

I think its a way better team than the start of last year. The roster at the end was a bit too little too late. Build chemistry with the team we have now and we shall see who gets added or subtracted in the year. Stick to the core deployement and tinker with the periphery. Stop moving Mitch and Willy too much.

Can I ask you, why do you think the GM that never got out of the second round and made Calgary what they are today is a "competent GM"?

I've liked his moves for the most part (some bad ones like every GM), but why is one GM incompetent and the other competent?

If that's the logic you are using I could ask you why Dubas is any better since he's also never made it out of the 2nd round

100%. I thought last year, post deadline especially, Keefe and his staff never really gave anyone runway to build chemistry. There was waaay too much juggling going on. That coupled with the loss of foot speed, I thought really hurt us in the playoffs.

Great to see them get the first round monkey off their backs. That was important, but I thought lack of cohesion and speed were issues that were really noticeable after the deadline.

Not that Florida’s success last playoffs in any way indicates we will definitely achieve the same, I do think it continues to be worth mention that they are team that shed their first round demons just to get swept in round 2 one year prior, loaded with players who have long been questioned whether they have what it takes and got all the way to the cup finals a few wins from the ultimate prize. The parallels are very clear.

I look forward to seeing how our identity forms this season, and how we bolster our roster throughout to put ourselves in the best position to make a deep deep run. Hopefully this time not at the expense of speed

Which team would you rather GM right now, Calgary or Toronto?

Both teams performed poorly and both GMs failed, but I think one guy did a much better job giving his team a chance to win.

I'd rather GM Toronto.

Toronto easily.

Even with the contract issues of our current core, Toronto does a good job at attracting NHL UFAs (eg Brodie, Bertuzzi, Domi, Samsanov, Bunting, Tavares, etc) and I can't think of a player that clearly WANTED to leave (either by requesting a trade or walking in free agency).

All the key players who walked, such as Bozak, JVR, Campbell, Anderson, etc, weren't guys the team put much (if any) effort into keeping. Calgary had Gaudreau walk, Tkachuk demand a trade, and then half their current core has indicated an interest in leaving.

The issues we do have are ones that can be fixed by turning over the core (if needed). Calgary will always be a team that struggles to attract UFAs and convince people to stay longterm.

Well Dubas never faced Marner not re-signing, and Matthews demanding a trade.

How would Dubas have dealt with that situation?

Hopefully, he wouldn't have traded a young star for aging vets and signed them to bad contracts, but I guess we won't ever know.

I am now excited, let this Debbie downer thread title die. We all love hockey, plenty of intriguing angles, I’ll buy in for another roller coaster because I love the sport and it only takes one run to change the narrative and live in infamy. Kill this summer thread :)

Yeah, even less excited than I was going into last season. Just one too many disappointments.

I want to believe and I'd love to just enjoy what will certainly be a strong (regular) season watching stars like AM and Marner do great things but you can't force it. It's either there or it's not, and until this team shows in the playoffs that they can and want to win it all, I just can't.

Yep, feel sorry for those that can't get behind it. Going to be a long winter.

Literally every team is different. This quote has never really been applicable to sports but it won’t stop people from using it incorrectly
Yep, lots of turnover. That quote doesn't apply here.

This is the quote I'm applying to this year, :wg:

Based on this position I have taken for 7 decades of support for my Leafs dating back to the 1960's.

The Leafs are in the entertainment business now and not the winning business, and so wake me up when winning becomes the #1 priority because for me ..

Meh grit is why. People are pretending Dubas didn't bring in nothing but grit last deadline and honestly several years in a row. Like we added Foligno for grit ffs in 2021

Wouldn't winning provide the greatest(and most lucrative) entertainment?
What is their #1 priority if not winning?
Where specifically do you see they are trying to 'fool' us?
