At the end of the day, we are all on this forum because we have some interest with this team. So most should be exciting for the season, whatever the previous results are
We're all here because we have some interest in the team - 100% correct. Being excited, that's something else entirely. I mean I'm happy hockey is back and I'll be watching so there's that. But I'm also reasonably sure how the next 82 games will play out for us so that makes is all somewhat unexciting.

We'll cruise to the playoffs, if we show signs in the 1st round that this team can raise their level of compete to what's required to go deep, then I'll really be excited. Until then, there's a limit to how excited I can be.

I am hoping our playoff opponent won’t be determined by Christmas, at least. Last season was terrible, just dragging on and on when we already knew it will be Tampa.

Yeah good point, I'd forgotten about that. Let's hope we're cruising to 1st overall (or at least 1st in the division) and it's the scramble for wild card spots that makes things interesting.

Dubas brought in Reilly, Acciari, Lafferty, McCabe & Schenn last year for character, grit, experience, depth, toughness, etc. and this group barely got by TB and got smoked by Florida.

Yet somehow, the different look of 2 rookies with some compete (but little experience), an injured (and rebounding, hopefully) Klingsberg, Domi & Bertuzzi we've got the secret recipe figured out? Come on, don't fall for it again.

Why did you use deadline acquisitions for your argument, when it's a start of a season sentiment. So we won't make additional moves this year, this is it? Come on. Doesn't even make sense. Why even watch then too.

The regular season is always exciting. Great hockey

Playoffs come and the goons get rewarded as the rules change and the excuse it’s playoff hockey begins

No other sport does that. I don’t see the NFL…..NBA or MLB change rules so their stars get abused and goons prevail.

So enjoy the 82 games. We again have a great team.

One day the NHL will realize you have to promote your stars and not goons. Open the ice up …make it olympic size. Let the stars shine.

Also get rid of the shootouts. It’s a team game not a circus. Imagine if the nba decided OT with a dunking contest? It’s pathetic to decide team games like that IMHO

I'm the biggest sucker in the world I guess, because despite all the setbacks and gut wrenching losses, this team, this year, has me curiously excited. The addition of the kids, a top 9 that has so much intrigue, a different mix, there is much to keep me engaged this regular season. I sense an evolved maturity with our "stars" I haven't heard before, this could really be our year. The right moves at the deadline, who knows...

This is what I’ve said every year since the 80’s

(That probably means the Leafs lose in round 1 to the sens after blowing a 3-1 series lead)

The new vet guys perked my interest but the young guns on the 3rd line made me sit up and really take notice. Really think these additions are going to add some life and a new dimension to this team. Fingers crossed on the goalies. I think Woll could be our future but can he stay healthy, and Sammy was pretty good last year but Im not totally sold on him at this point. The D group make me a little nervous and Im not sure how Tre goes about remaking it in the vision he talks about...big, long, mean, but if he can, I like our chances.

Back to the topic...I wasn't too excited when it looked like we were running it back again which we are in some respects but the new additions to the team definitely intrigue me and have me a little excited, which I wouldnt have said up until very recently.

Good summary. It's pretty easy to predict how the regular season will go - more wins than losses, another top 10 finish overall, the naive/gullible crowd will get overly excited when we go on a meaningless run in November, the Pauls among us will rave about Marner posting "super crazy elite" a couple of thousand times, we'll add a player or two at the TDL and that'll be that.

Those of us with a functioning brain and memory know that it's the same coach, the same core and whether we finish 1st or 10th overall or how we do in November means dick once the playoffs start. This is a good regular season team with a core that has been unable to play at a high level in the playoffs, that's the beginning and the end of it. Will this year be different? I guess you never know but nothing that happens between now and April will be a part of the answer.

Best think we can do is to try to forget that the playoffs exist. This is a team with a lot of talent that is fun to watch and wins much of the time when the stakes are low so as long as we can forget about the annual playoff failures, there will be entertainment.

I asked you yesterday what you're basing this on and your silence speaks volumes. It's too bad, I was hoping you had some straw we could grasp on to because regardless of how excited some people are about Domi, Bertuzzi, Knies, Minten and whoever else, in the playoffs, this team will go as far as our young stars take us.
Jeez, you've done a 180 from last year.

Always pumped for start of a new season. The past is irrelevant and I'll worry about the playoffs in April.
That's a good way to be for sure, makes the season more enjoyable if you can forget about how badly we've sucked in the playoffs with this core. I wish I could do it but I just can't erase the memory of Marner playing historically badly in game 3 as yet another season turned into a missed opportunity. Out of all our playoff failures, that was the worst one for me.

Jeez, you've done a 180 from last year.
Really? What was I saying a year ago? I imagine I was saying I'll judge the team by how they do in the playoffs, I've been saying that for a while now.

For sure.
So much changes from year to year that it's silly to dwell on the past when you've got such an excellent team to enjoy.
People still weep about a puck over the glass 5 years ago, 'let it go'.

Agreed, no need to bring back embarrassments from 4 playoffs ago. We have the most recent example.

No one weeping for his pathetic display in game 3 vs Florida or any other playoff failure.

The weeping and cringing is for the next "scared soccer player moment" that will cost us series.

LOL, the only one "weeping" seems to be you.

Also, how many times do you have to be told that the MTL series wasn't 5 years ago? You keep posting the same nonsense over again, don't you ever learn?

You know what would really get me pumped, if Marner or Matthews said something along the lines of what Mahomes said last week. For those that missed it, what he said was something like this - "if I play better, everyone will play better".

That's what leadership and accountability sounds like!

Well, a team that has Matthews, Marner, Nylander all 26 or 27 years old needs to win more than just 1 round. They need to get to the final. If you’re happy with just 1 or 2 round wins, then good for you.
I agree. Given that they're in their prime, anything less than conference finals will be a disappointment. With the trades to upgrade our defence that Tre will assuredly make, this team has what it needs to succeed if those 3 elevate their games in the playoffs.

knies and minten are giving me a reason to watch regular season again. not that i dislike the team or anything but after so many years of the same script its really nice to have a few young guys that can hopefully really show out and make a difference, i think the way the play will rub off on everyone. my favorite season in recent memory was 2016/17 with 2nd year willy and marner/matty rookie just for day in and out viewing.
When was the last time we had 2 rookie make the team.

Next yr Cowen may join the team.

All 3 of them hustle there asses of and get involved physically along with there skill.
Iam so excited to watch the games this season.
Keep up the great work boys .

Cowen on the Knights.

I hope so, show the way mathews .
