To bad the habs are on a decade + rebuild and it won't happen.
Decade? Sorry to disappoint you. We are not the Buffalo/Ottawa. We have trouble finishing in the bottom 5. It took us back to back record breaking injury season for us to finish in the bottom 5.

Nice try!:laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh:

It’s so insane the rope he has been given.

If he’s not fired tomorrow it just further cements Dubas is starting off his tenure here in a very, very bad way.
Sully has to know where the bodies are or some other blackmail fodder nothing else makes sense. He doesn't even coach anymore he's just there.

Dubas isn't in any rush to fire Sullivan.

Because firing Sullivan and bringing in his own coach starts the timer on Dubas existence in Pittsburgh.

Dubas has one bullet in his gun, which is firing Sullivan.

Once that bullet is used and Dubas brings in his own coach, then he will no longer be able to blame poor coaching for the Penguins poor performance.

Dubas will then start to face scrutiny regarding his own job performance after he brings in his own coach and that coach fails.

Keeping Sullivan as coach lengthens Dubas honeymoon grace period as GM of the Penguins.
Next time a Pens fans laments why Sullivan isn’t fired yet, read this.

He isn’t as dumb as people think. He knows this isn’t a playoff roster and the microscope would be on him.

Who could've predicted this?! I get wanting to keep Crosby and Malkin as Pens for life, but you had to know that continuing to sell 1st round picks year after year was a bad idea when the team's window has clearly closed.

Pittsburgh now is basically the mid-2010s Red Wings or the late 2010s Sharks. It's gonna be a looooonnngggg rebuild.

Thread title should be changed to „The Pittsburgh Penguins are getting old“.

I get major San Jose Sharks vibes from a few years back, desperately trying to give the old core more chances at glory and not seeing there is no way they win anything with that core anymore and not seeing that being in the mushy middle doesn’t help your rebuilt.

Yeah I mean the generational talent is still clearly there, there's just no 'spark' of youth getting ready to take over.

We're seeing it in LA with Kopitar and to a lesser degree doughty--future hall of famers still stand out but you can see they cant carry the load in the same way they used to vs. a bunch of young legs. Yet, if they were 2C or at least not leading the league in icetime per game, you know they'd help a team. That's what it looked like from my extremely small sample size of the whole game yesterday, anyway.

I'm a big sentiment guy and believe some of these heroes should retire with their OG teams, but I agree with you, major late Joe Thornton vibes.

Especially since they don't even seem willing to admit that they need to rebuild.

If they're just willingly, internally admitting that they're all gas no brakes until Crosby/Malkin are gone, I guess that's their choice... But it's gonna be really, really ugly as those guys deteriorate and then retire.

It was weird to me that Dubas took the job, honestly. The guy's reputation up to that point was blowing a large portion of Toronto's contending window, and he follows it up by taking a job that anybody is doomed to fail in? Pittsburgh is a 35+ core with a rancid prospect pool. He's going to be the scapegoat as the team inevitably descends into hell.

Yup. Huge mistake trading for EK. With him, and Crosby and Letang they will be stuck in the middle for those contracts. They will draft 10-15. Not good for a rebuild.

Middle of the pack teams are contending for a playoff spot. The Penguins aren't.
And miss the playoffs and draft 10-15. Not where clubs have the best chance to get elite talent during a rebuilding phase. Those three high end players might be old but they are now and will continue to be good enough to raise the level of the roster to the middle.

Their rebuild phase should be now while they still have decent years left on the core group. But there still competing for a playoff spot. Sane for Washington.

I think with a different coaching staff the Penguins have probably made a deep run within the last few years and are a playoff lock this year.

The underachieving by this group and the fact you see players consistently leave it and find consistency with other franchises when used appropriately ala Freddie Gaudreau, Jared McCann, Teddy Blueger etc.

It drives me nuts to see the last few years of Sid, Malkin and Letsng totally wasted because of ownerships’ refusal to fire an awful coach who does not belong and overstayed his welcome.
