And retain on him to get more assets. The Flyers don't need cap space for a couple of years at least.

The Provorov situation mirrors the Risto situation so much.

Coveted based on reputation. Teams (plural) interested at the deadline. Trade gets pushed to the summer.

The market is obviously there for him. Does Briere settle for a single or does he hit a home run?

Thanks again for your reply. I'll leave sentence 1 as a difference of opinion since I don't have time to dig into stats (not that I am convinced they will prove my point. I already covered the cap dump aspect in my previous point; i.e., not a key element of the deal. I don't see this team having a pressing need to fill roster spots, though. As it stands, they have 5 defensemen signed for next season and will certainly re-sign York, plus they should be looking to find NHL ice time for prospects.
They may trade 2 of them, and you have to go through an 82-game season, not to mention they don’t seem to be impressed with the guys they have there. Like anyone else, Walker might get hurt, he also might not. Quite frankly, that’s a non-issue, it’s a low-risk play to maximize value. The Flyers are in the business of taking expiring dumped contracts right now.

This is exactly when a good GM should smell the desperation and sell on Provorov.

Toronto has no trade chips. I mean the cupboard is bare when it comes to draft picks.

As far as prospects, Knies is probably their best trade chip, but while the Flyers could use a LW, is he good enough to be the centerpiece of a trade?
Minten sounds like a Cates clone, good depth addition as a throw-in.
Niemela sounds like a depth guy at RHD.
And given the Leaf's cap issues, we'd have to take a contract back and throw in a cheap forward (Allison?). They'd probably want to dump Muzzin if they can't LTIR him.

I'd say a late 1st rounder from a team like Toronto is good, but not the homerun I'd be hoping Briere can get. Short of a Hall-for-Larsson type robbery (Too bad Nylander is off the table), I think the best possible outcome is going to be either a top 15 pick or a pick+pick/prospect package, none of which work perfectly with Toronto.

Don't want Nylander, Marner's a different matter, Nylander isn't the kind of keystone piece you want to give a big contract to in a couple years.

I'd take Knies, #28 (or their 24 #1, if Danny thinks it's a better bet), their choice of B prospect, and the husk of Jake Muzzin for Provorov at 50%. We could probably do better, and I'd look elsewhere first, but I could absolutely see that as a fallback.

Listening to Jones on Gargano's show - it's avail on spotify.

Couple quick notes:
1. Says TK struggled in bubble/covid season because we played same teams over and over again and we didn't have any players to help him feel comfortable....this was after 20 min of telling us we need high end skill, not sure what he was going for lol

2. Danny has full say on draft picks, trades, it's his team.

3. Says trading Bob was a big mistake, and said something like "we're still paying that guy" after Cuz made a "humongous big" joke

4. Mentions Fedotov by name as a prospect, they clearly haven't given up on that kid, I feel like Danny said something about this

5. Wayne Gretzky told him that he wasn't 100% locked on Bedard at #1 or something?

6. Understands that the young generation of Flyers fans don't care about the Flyers, needs to get back to relevance

7. Says there's a chance we will pick top 10 again next year, Cuz said we should have tanked this year basically and that we hired Torts a year early

8. Backend and stars, that's basically what they are going for

9. Will reduce salary this year, said they might add to the cap department staff - reiterated for the 1,000th time - owners will give him a blank check to go get talent to add to front office

10. Says the 2020 Flyers were a bit of a fluke. He knew that they weren't winning despite Vegas gambling odds.

I’m not seeing Toronto as the team that can give the best offer for Provorov, either.

Sounds like a pretty realistic take on this team.
Blank check to add FO talent implies he's hunting for top scouts, etc., maybe raid organizations like Carolina that are cash poor.

How often have we heard the "we are gonna SPEND?" mantra? They spend on the wrong things and people. So it doesn't matter.

They're never going to win the younger generations because they refuse to get out of 2003. Their grand solution will probably be adding the letter X to a logo and getting Evanescence for an intermission show.

Thank you for sharing.

Someone ask Hilferty why Briere can't go on the radio and say the same things.

It is an informative interview. I just finished listening to the first 30 minutes. Of course, Gargano is giddy & slobbering over Jones the whole time.

Was very interesting to hear Jones say he talked to Gretzky that morning & Gretzky wasn’t sure about Bedard at #1.

Jones himself seemed surprised about it.

I am begging you all to take the nanosecond to think about the subtle market corrections here. Now it’s not just “We wanted Gretzky, but Hextall insisted on Samuel L Jackson’s character from Unbreakable.” Now they knew ‘19-20 was smoke and mirrors. Vegas may have been fooled, but not the professionals who are now ~inside the building~.

This has nothing to do with the transcriber. Your effort is appreciated. Thank you.

That’s like the first time I think I heard Gretzky doubting a player. Usually he’s saying how everybody was better than him.

I finished the interview this morning.

Jones is terrific: Very clear, well-spoken, & intelligent. He’s not flying by the seat of his pants. He has a vision of how the rebuild will proceed.

He again stressed that the defense corps is the most important element of a team, something I have said for a long time. So I’m loving that he emphasizes the same thing.

He was adamant that there are Niskanen-like players out there (not elite, but important players who make others better) & they “will find them.” He was so emphatic on this that he almost certainly has names in mind. There are players out there he wants & thinks they can get.

Mentioned they will be reducing their cap (i.e., trading high-priced vets).

Indicated they will be looking to add draft picks by trading these higher-cap players.

He doesn’t want to give up on young players too quickly & have them blossom somewhere else. Mentioned Frost by name & cited his strong 2nd-half numbers.

Called Provorov a “commodity” that other teams want.

Kind of downplayed the importance of goaltending a couple of times, which was nice to hear considering some fans have gone off the deep-end saying the Flyers need to “build around” Hart. Pretty clear that Jones doesn’t share this philosophy.

Jones is so incredibly well-connected & liked in the hockey world that it should be a real boon to the organization. He can gather intel & opinions from everyone, & you’ve gotta think it will help grease the wheels on trades & ultimately that players are going to want to play for his team.

Stressed that both he & Briere think player development is a huge priority & said they’re “making changes there.”

Seems to want better cap management, so could imply some changes there, too.

Sounds like Jones the President is free to say things Jones the shill had to swallow, I suspect that comment about 2019-20 is one of them.
Didn't mention his talks with Clarke and Lombardi, did he?

The issue with defense isn't that he wants to build from the defense out, but what kind of defense?
A TB forest of giants, Colorado jet pack guys, or Florida and Carolina and low cost smart veterans?

It would be a huge change if the organization started hunting undervalued young veterans instead of overpaying second tier guys.
It would mean they've finally learned how the cap works.

The entire point of this arrangement is to keep Clarke and Lombardi where they are, and Jones is smart enough to know it's dumb to ever mention them.

It's funny watching the usual people getting fooled by a management group that hasn't changed at all.

The team's ongoing obsession with Niskanen shows the continuity. All the same people obsessing over the exact same things. They found a dman who played well for half a season and they act like they found Rafalski laying around. Or like they're Carolina. Methinks the guy who considers Hagg and Risto to be Peak Dman isn't going to be doing anything to build this new and improved D group ready for a modern game.

I listened to the Briere interview posted earlier as well as their Jones interview.

I thought that a little cringy at several points, including the Blues idealization which the host actually called out after the interview.

But there are good signs. When asked what player Briere IDs as a future flyer type he literally said Mackinnon. Jones said that they don’t want players like him - tail end of their career guy. He wants fast skilled guys.

They don’t seem to be all on goalies and they want strong D. I think it was Jones who cited Dallas and Carolina.

I am willing to wait and see what they do. Or at least try to do. They have been left with a lot of trash so it’s going to take some years to get any real direction. This off-season will be telling in trading the right players for picks and then making the right picks. For example - I can see them not picking Dvorsky based on what I’ve seen.
