Oh, for the "words matter" crowd:

Yeah, they've clearly learned that they need to cultivate a different perspective in order to engender different results...
In addition to today's announcement, the Flyers have relieved Mike O'Connell, John Riley and Kjell Samuelsson of their duties.

O'Connell was hired by the Philadelphia Flyers in August of 2021 as a senior advisor to the General Manager. Flyers announce additions & promotions to hockey operations staff

words do not matter. Actions matter. Only actions.

Do you mean Danny is on board with the direction Torts wants to take? torts should have zero say in the draft.

A better GM would not have had them as a bottom feeder.
All HCs have input to some extent. A lesser role in the draft, but they're still going to provide input in terms of the qualities they want in players.
Torts biggest influence is probably on "subtraction," pointing out the guys he thinks have no future.
And there are probably players around the league he covets (he'll live with McDavid) . . .

I disagree that head coaches have input in the draft. Can you provide some examples?
He covets the wrong type pf player in 2023.

His subtractions are Hayes and probably Tony D. Even Stevie wonder can see that. Who do you think he wants to substract excluding those 2?

They brought Riley Armstrong (Colby’s brother) in from outside the organization when they hired him as an AHL assistant coach in 21/22.

He’s only 38, now in charge of player development.

Or does the fact that he spent two years with the Phantoms and/or worked with Briere when both were with the Maine Mariners for some reason disqualify him from being competent?

Seems like a good idea to turn over player development to younger staff who have some familiarity with the organization’s prospects.

Nick Schultz himself is only 40, & wasn’t exactly a Flyers lifer with a very long career outside the organization.

If his development values are in line with what the team likes, then he sucks.

At this point, they haven't brought in a single new employee from outside of the organization. Pretty incredible.
Yes, because teams allow personnel to leave before the draft with knowledge of the team's ranking of prospects and/or FA targets.
And you can poach FO personnel under contract as long as you don't mind being penalized.

Yeah man, zero hockey executives have been hired this summer by other teams from outside their organization, good point.

Guys who were fired. Which makes them fair game. HCs, assistant HCs and GMs.
Once you get past the draft, musical chairs starts when new GMs hire their people from their former organization and dump people they've inherited.

And the Flyers are incapable of interviewing execs who got fired because.......why exactly?

Especially for a team as deeply conservative as the Flyers. The Richards/Carter trades are probably the most radical trades they've ever made. Even in the team's current state, it would be quite a shock for them to deal Hayes, Provorov, and TK in a single offseason.

In January it was being reported that Briere didn't feel ready/comfortable being a GM yet. It would be one hell of a confidence shift for him to go from that, to making a trio (or more) of trades which are each massive by the organization's standards.
of course he is going to say that though. especially in the shitty corporate environment he's in, being the flyers front office. I wouldn't take that comment too seriously, just my humble opinion.

I think they want to move him because of the fact that when this team will be competitive he will be at the end of his prime years *if he resigned* so they could trade him while his value is at an all time high, it's not just trading him, just to trade him, realistically the flyers won't be competitive for 5 years with good drafting and player development, that would put tk at 31 years old, so maximizing his value now is a very smart way of building a hockey team
i agree with both posts. i just think if you do trade him you have to get max value. if hes over a ppg next season he would be worth alot more.

Because they did with some of these guys, but they wanted no part of a structure where Briere had the final say over personnel.
The kind of people the Flyers will probably hire are senior scouts, assistant GMs, capologists, analytics guys, etc.

Ah no, it was no part of the structure where Briere and Tortorella had say and they had no ability to replace either. Remember? Weird how competent hockey people want no part of this supposed super-genius everyone supposedly adores and respects.

On the other side, if he gets hurt next season, or has a weird flukes bad season, his value is tanked when it comes to trading him, so it's a catch 22, I love tk, but I'm in the trade him camp for the reasons I stated prior

I saw an inmate onetime give up his tray of food to some punks i sent to the time out block. the thing is it was a rare night the kitchen sent out baked potatoes. dude gave up his shitty food but refused to give up his potato, which made it get a little physical. the food is complete shit, but he refused to give jackasses A and B his potato. the flyers are shit, but hart is like the potato, I don't want to let him go.

yea, it kind of sucks because im a TK guy, so if he does go i just hope we get something good back, but because of his age its probly gonna be a pick and lehtera type.

And this team didn't interview someone outside this organization (such as a fired exec from another team, which we confirmed is possible) when looking for a GM, why?

Pittsburgh interviewed Tulsky, Botterill, Darche, and MacKinnon from teams that were in the playoffs. While they ended up picking up Dubas for POHO and it appears he's going to manage the draft, they didn't seem to have any issues approaching guys currently in a front office role prior to him becoming available.
