And this team didn't interview someone outside this organization (such as a fired exec from another team, which we confirmed is possible) when looking for a GM, why?
Because they've been grooming Briere for the job.
Obviously, he must have impressed the PTB since this was initiated a couple years ago, it wasn't an overnight decision.

OHHHHHHH, so they do have the ability to hire outside the organization, they just choose not to.

I guess you can retract this post now:
Yes, because teams allow personnel to leave before the draft with knowledge of the team's ranking of prospects and/or FA targets.
And you can poach FO personnel under contract as long as you don't mind being penalized.
...seeing as the explanation of why they don't even try to hire outside the organization is "they don't want to".

Who are these "Power That Be"?

Not Dan because he just got hired.
Valarie? The one with no hockey knowledge?

Just trying to figure out who started grooming Briere a few years ago.
Valerie is the one that had him go to Wharton, so she does belong on the list.

Oh ok. So the non hockey person who....was drawn to Philadelphia for the chance to oversee the arena's upgrades, including the installation of a 4K Kinetic scoreboard, new LED video and lighting systems and upgrades to the mezzanine, main concourse and suite levels.

Sounds like the perfect person to determine who a good hockey GM will be.

Just catching up, first, love the idea of Provorov and taking advantage of a Toronto 'splash' definitely retain half salary and scoop up everything they have available.

Also, saw a bit about cronyism and culture, and I explained to my uncle a few weeks ago, Flyers Culture TM, doesn't need to be old guys and broad street bullies team make up. I think it comes down to the experience and loyalty that Ed Snider lived and breathed. It's not a mistake that Paul Holmgren, despite knowing Ed Snider for 40ish years, never waivered from calling him Mr. Snider. We can point out that maybe he was too close, ala Jerry Jones, but two stories stick out in my mind as to what Flyers Culture he created.

First, during Rod Brind'Amour's speech for the Flyers' HOF, he told a story about his rookie year, when he had a bad game or an altercation with an official, and the ref told him to 'Shut the f*** up, rookie' and after telling Snider post game, dude bolted into the refs room and said don't you ever f***ing talk to one of my players like that again.

Second, Steve Downie had a small freak out on Twitter because of how the Coyotes handled an injury with him, and what a second rate organization they are. They tried to deny him treatment or something to that affect, then he told a story of a time on the Flyers when he was concussed, had an overnight in the hospital and Ed Snider was there when he woke up. He was a kid/rookie, but he was a Flyer, and Ed Snider made sure to make it known he cared about him personally.

Jones and Briere (and Schultz et al) aren't "Flyers" the way Holmgren, Clarke and Barber were.

That is, while they certainly identify with the team, and respected Mr. Snider, they weren't lifers, they played the majority of their careers elsewhere, have been exposed to a lot of different organizations, and aren't locked in to a "Flyers way."

And of course, while Torts may have respected the Flyers over the years, he's a complete outsider.

So this group isn't tied to the multiple decades group of players and employees that have been the core of the organization. They've distanced themselves from the advisors, Briere just fired two Flyer "lifers" and so on.

I would like to see Briere raid the Carolina, Florida and Colorado organizations for pro scouts, three value oriented groups with different but complementary strengths, just don't get the amateur scouts from Florida and Colorado, steal them from TB.

That’s such crap. Briere has spent 14 of his last 16 years as a Flyers/Comcast employee. He's never been in another front office. Jones since 1998, besides a career sabbatical immediately post-retirement, has been a Flyers/Comcast employee. That's 18 years.

The idea they aren't immersed in the "Flyers way" is eye roll worthy. Jones is about as by-the-book as it gets with that shit. Briere, who you can have the tiniest sliver of hope about, trained under the tutelage of the old heads you now lambast. The fact you have to portray Torts as a "complete outsider" also speaks volumes. He was acquired specifically at the behest of the advisors. He's a superficial outsider -- they found the most principally alike man they could.

Jones was a Flyer for two seasons (and 8 games) out of a ten year NHL career.
Started as an in-studio analyst for NBC in 2005-06, then became a color commentator for the Flyers. In fall 2021, Jones joined TNT/TBS as the lead ice-level analyst.
So he's been national longer than a Flyer announcer.

Briere joined the Maine Mariners in June 2017, Comcast but NOT Flyers affiliate. Flyer player from 2007-2013 out of a 16 year career.
Feb 2022 named special assistant to the GM - i.e. put in place to replace Fletcher by Comcast.
Briere was a tough little smurf, more like TK or Marchand than Caufield or DeBrincat.
I expect him to bring that attitude to the kind of team he wants to build.

The Advisors may have thought they had someone alike in Torts - until he opened his mouth and said the emperor had no clothes and basically got Fletcher fired and the advisors banished. Torts does not have the same approach as the advisors, I'd say he's more similar to Brind'Amour (a former Flyer!) in that he stresses fundamentals and an aggressive forecheck, but plays young players and holds everyone accountable. Like Cassidy, he expects everyone to block shots and play defense.

Oh, for the "words matter" crowd:
Danny Brière said:
"I'm excited to announce the promotions of Alyn, Riley and Nick," said Briere. "These three have been around the organization for some time, in particularly, with our current prospects and young players, so I know they will each provide the direction and leadership that is necessary to get our future assets to the NHL level."

Yeah, they've clearly learned that they need to cultivate a different perspective in order to engender different results..

That Briere quote is anything we need to know. They think they all are doing a good job. They believe its an easy way with a few Draftpicks and the fans will come back.

It becomes clearer and clearer. And Briere hasnt done shit and we already know how it will end! See you in 5 years

This is just one of a thousand ridiculous posts from a man trying to write his own alternate Flyers universe, but the fact it's time stamped 2:42am makes it extra sad.

briere played the majority of his career in philly.

To not interview any gm candidates is negligence. pure and simple.

we both know that will not happen, probably give Sam Morin a promotion and hire justin braun.

6 of 16 seasons is the "majority" of a career? Briere played for five different teams and I think at least 6 different HCs.

Rod Brind’Amour played in Philly for 9 years & over 600 games.

By the logic used on this board, he must suck.
