My thing with Seeler is that he’s a third pairing defenseman and should be compensated as such-three years at two million per is the top rate for a player like that. Unfortunately these guys get to thinking that they’re second pair players and want to get near four million a year. At that point they’re over their skates. Best to let them go and use up the cap space. The Flyers have a habit of overpaying down the roster defensemen. CIP-Risto, AMac, TDA and others. That has to stop.
Honestly AAV doesn't really matter right now. They aren't and shouldn't be making any big moves so a high AAV isn't a big deal if the term is short. I don't think they should re-sign him or Walker but it isn't the end of the world as long as it is 2-3 years max (and it is only one of them).

I'm awe of how this team can't help themselves but fall in love with every mediocre depth player on the roster and resign them all. Is there another rebuilding team that does this? Serious question.
Tough to answer when the Flyers were never rebuilding. Just shuffling chairs on the ole Flytanic been going down since 2012

Kevin Hayes stats show the wisdom of the7 year deal

At 6-foot-5, Hayes can be a physical presence in a checking-line role, a complementary wing in a top-six role and a power-play presence because of his shot. He also has the size to play in the corners and the skill to set up in the slot.

What a bio for Hayes...who wrote it?

Getting a 6th rounder for that contract is already looking like a steal. 22 points for 7.1 mil a season. Ouch.

I wonder if there is a situation where Walker alone gets you a 2nd, but including Seeler gets you that 1st, maybe you add on a late round pick.

Also, I think being “good in the room is important”, considering how much time these guys spend together - a season can go downhill quick if you have the wrong mix in the locker room. It’s not the end all be all, but it’s not to be completely discredited, it matters.

Looking around the league, most comparable players are in the 2.5 to 3 range. Seeing as how this is going to be his first and likely only big contract, he’s obviously going to want to get as much as he possibly can.

His agent will argue he's been a 2nd pair guy this season.

Better to invest in a counselor whose compensation won’t count against the cap. Can’t pay top dollar for JAGs who look like they try hard

Friedman on 32 Thoughts:

- Philly likely to add a CHEAP goaltender and veteran forward at the deadline.
- they will not budge on contract or trade negotiations. Friedman expects Laughton to stay in Philly.
- said he heard on Sunday that Philly has their eyes on the playoffs and want to acquire pieces to make that happen, but not high end assets used to acquire it.
- said they touched on Zegras, but they don’t want to spend the assets to acquire.
- although there’s a bunch of noise regarding Seeler, Walker, and Laughton, if teams don’t match, then they’re not moving. Philly also won’t budge on contracts negotiations. Walker wants 5 years likely around 30 mil and Philly doesn’t want to go that long. Seeler wants somewhere above 3 and Philly doesn’t want to go that high.

He expressed a little concern that they’re backing themselves into a corner. If they won’t play ball, then it fully comes down to how Briere can handle everything caving in at once.

They are going to get their shit pushed in in the 1st round (best case), lose both Walker and Seeler for nothing because they have set some unrealistic internal valuation they absolutely must reach (DB trying hard not to seem like a mark), and probably lose a few picks to acquire some shit veterans at the deadline, all the while claiming they are rebuilding. What’s not to like?
