Haha, I don't think it's an embarrassment. I don't think anyone outside of this message board knows or cares what he has to say (nor would they if anyone else was in that position). Before I respond, by “anyone in his position” do you mean a president of an NHL franchise or his specific job here?

Here, which I understand isn't a very high bar. Haha. Although I suspect it isn't that much different in most organizations. The level of involvement and control among all these front office guys I am sure varies greatly among different franchises. Jonesy isn't a polished guy and no one should have expected him to be. That isn't what he is there for. I am certain we could find a better president but this is the Flyers, that isn't what they do. He may turn out to be doing a great job, but until he does I will assume he is just cracking jokes and farting like he did on WIP. A different franchise likely wouldn't have hired Jonesy but the guy they do hire probably is going to do roughly the same stuff that Jonesy is doing, just will be more serious with his comments publicly.

I don't think this is a huge PR mess anywhere other than on these message boards, and again if you have ever had any experience in having seen or heard Jonesy anywhere, you would not be concerned about anything he says, good or bad.

The issue isn't the sentiment, it's that the guy who was entirely hired for his communications acumen somehow worded it in the worst way possible. And if the deadline in a week is a flop, it will tie in smoothly with the "the rebuild being BS."

Furthermore, I would have to question why players need to be reminded by the front office not to tank. I thought Torts just naturally got that out of guys.

This team’s fan base has eroded the last ten years in ticket sales and tv viewership because they keep doing the same crap over and over again. The President of the organization just said that he has lied to the fanbase all year and it will continue. If this quote gets out, and it will, Jonesy being Jonesy is not going to be put next to it in every publication. Context is never included with such a quote because of the higher emotional response. This was as bad a quote from a new administration as you can get.

Don’t take my word for it. Just watch the PR cleanup that the franchise will do over the coming days and that will show what a crapshow Jones just created. I wouldn’t doubt if it doesn’t start immediately.

Let’s strip this down to it’s bare bones.

The question that Jones was asked was “has the team exceeded your expectations?”

A response including “we're saying one thing to everyone as far as our messaging and that is that we're rebuilding but we made sure to tell every member of the team that that's BS” in any context is bad.

It’s a statement that just doesn’t need to be made.
