So just to be clear, the Flyers media mouthpiece says something and instead of believing what he said, we should instead "infer" what he meant.

Let's see what the actions show....

Didn't sell high on Laughton....just made him A captain a few weeks ago
Got rid of non-Torts guys....including looking at trading Frost
Added Staal, Hathaway, Poehling
Traded Gauthier for a guy playing now....when healthy

Where are the rebuilding moves under Briere?
Don't forget tried to give our best D away for Torrey Krug.

This team’s fan base has eroded the last ten years in ticket sales and tv viewership because they keep doing the same crap over and over again. The President of the organization just said that he has lied to the fanbase all year and it will continue. If this quote gets out, and it will, Jonesy being Jonesy is not going to be put next to it in every publication. Context is never included with such a quote because of the higher emotional response. This was as bad a quote from a new administration as you can get.

Don’t take my word for it. Just watch the PR cleanup that the franchise will do over the coming days and that will show what a crapshow Jones just created. I wouldn’t doubt if it doesn’t start immediately.
I think it's been wildly blown out of proportion even if it is 100% true, which again, given that Jonesy is the one that said it you can pretty easily ignore it. What kind of PR cleanup are they going to have to do? The fans already hate the team and the brass it isn't like you and I are sitting here going, "WAIT WHAT??? THIS TEAM IS GOING TO DO SOMETHING STUPID?! I DON'T BELIEVE IT!" We all expect them to botch this the same way they botched last year's deadline. Jonesy making a joke on the WIP morning show isn't going to change the direction of the team or create a PR shitstorm. FFS when Chuck held on to Martin Jones and turned down assets when the team was eliminated from the playoffs and Jones was a pending UFA and he said he didn't want to be in a situation where the team didn't have a good goalie, THAT should have created a PR nightmare but it didn't.

Make no moves, miss the playoffs , and watch the dino fans fall over each others to slurp up how smart this front office is.

Sad part is they could trade Walker and Laughton and potentially still make the playoffs, so the decision should be so easy.
you forgot be a worse team next year cuz the lightning in the bottle is gone..

then they get mad cuz

"wHy U nO rEbUilD"

🤣🤣

No, we're in the media mentions thread.
of a discussion board..

weird....🤣

The easy answer would have been:

While we certainly felt that Tort’s would have this team competing hard each and every night, sitting in 3rd in the Metro is probably about as good as we could have reasonably expected. Now, that being said, we certainly haven’t lost sight of the bigger picture which is building a team that can compete for the Stanley Cup. Are we there yet? No, but we will continue to build and we certainly hope to be there soon.

Then, if asked about moving any players between now and the deadline, the easy answer would have been:

I really can’t comment on that one way or the other since that is Danny’s department. All I can say is that we are going to do everything we can to build a Cup contending team as quickly as possible.

I mean for f*** sake, it’s not rocket science!
Remember when I was asked by someone on here what Jones should have said. And I said basically the same thing and they didn't even answer me lol good times. But this is spot on, we can do this job better than him which is sad

There’s about 75,000 different ways he could’ve phrased it better. But most of those sound like corporate BS and canned “say nothing” answers. I like Jonesy cause what you see is what you get. Still the same guy that was on the radio making you laugh for years despite getting elevated to the POHO role. This was an authentic Jonesy answer. Maybe he stepped in it a little from a PR perspective, but that’s classic Keith Jones.

Maybe if you’re a fan living outside the city who isn’t familiar with hearing him on sportstalk radio for a number of years or a fan who was used to hearing Chuckles sound like he perpetually had a stick up his ass, this would be legitimately concerning, but the majority of Flyers fans are capable of reading between the lines.

Whether they want to or not is an entirely different story. There’s a lot of fans here who want to be right about nothing having changed. They’ve put years of effort into that schtick after all…
Well summarized.

It was literally just trading Provorov, which tricked me into thinking it was a real rebuild for a couple of months this summer.

I know people give that trade differing grades, but everyone must admit the team was much better off without him sucking up all that ice time and oxygen.

Heh, Connauton and Hodgson are getting paid $475,000/$800,000 to pay for the Ontario Reign. I hope they sent Fletcher a Christmas card.

Completely meaningless such that he had to issue a statement through the new team Twitter mouthpiece today.

Wow, if anything you're the one with an air of superiority and it is very negative. Considering your impassioned pleas for everyone to be positive, perhaps you should follow your own scolding?

It’s tough to take you seriously as anything other than an agenda driven hater of the Flyers leadership when you try to spin Laughton REMAINING as an assistant captain as evidence they won’t trade him.

Two new members of leadership were named a few weeks ago… Coots (C), Konecny (A). Laughton has worn an A for a long time now. Nothing changed. They could’ve stripped the A I guess, but I can’t imagine stripping a guy of his letter would do much for your bargaining position with other teams.

In my opinion you have to listen to the full interview for context. The way I interpreted it is that Jones expressed there is a delicate balance between telling the fan's its a rebuild and keeping players' moral high. If I recall correctly, in one segment of the interview Jones was asked if he thought the team was a Stanley Cup Playoff contender (or something along those lines) and Jones said "no". Then the radio host asked if he'd tell that to the players and Jones responded roughly "I'd tell them that what I just said is BS".

I'm giving Jones the benefit of the doubt that externally he has to tell the fans its a rebuild while internally he has to tell the players that we are going to the playoffs and we are going to make a run. Ultimately it'll come down to how many UFAs are traded away at the trade deadline that will determine which path they were on and to whom they were not telling the truth to, the fans, or the players.

Just playing devils advocate here. As far as I am personally concerned every UFA should be traded to help the team in the future. It'd be awesome if we could weaponize our cap space too and get back some expensive yet serviceable players on short-term deals. If we stand pat and don't make any trades I'll be severely disappointed. I want my cake and to eat it too, I'd love a playoff run and picks in the upcoming draft/s.

I think that actions speak louder.

It’s hard to care at this point, but well… there is some care left there - so to speak.

In terms of a “rebuild”

- We have seen them move nobody of real value, contention vs age/productivity windows be damned. Provorov, and Hayes were deemed troublemakers, or wanted out. They have so far held on to Laughton, and with talks of extending Walker/Seeler… It’s not really promising.

I am willing to hold off until the deadline passes, but it’s clear imo they value a playoff appearance this season more than the maximum amount of available assets for the future.

- The Cutter Gauthier move is a disappointing one to me. They had 2 years to work out a deal with a team, and the best that was available was a cripple in Drysdale? Talented yes, and a potential to be something truly solid - but nobody is going to convince me that they didn’t want an NHL ready player in return to placate the fanbase. Not after selling a fanbase ready to burn Comcast alive - on Cutter being a foundational piece.

- I can’t help but to bring up Konecny, but the upcoming contract extension that’s for sure coming is foolish. It may pay off, but for a player that has somewhat of a reckless play style, smaller stature, and decent miles.. I’m not sure it’s a smart investment.

Some of these points are hypothetical scenarios, so of course we will see - but it screams a lot more to the perpetual half ass retools we have seen time, after time.

It’s just.. we are still completely bereft of high end talent. Outside of maybe Matvei coming over. The focus should be 100% on trying to fill that void, yet there is conversation about whether it’s smart to extend a couple of third pairing defensemen?

Those are gimme moves, yet the Flyers have us discussing such minutia because it’s just the norm. I don’t know how many times we’ve had to talk about a clearly non NHL caliber fourth line player over the years.

Again, these are basic moves a competent organization makes. Yet the Flyers just fall on their face time, and time again.

Hopefully they prove me wrong this deadline - and do something (gasp) to actually try to address the elephant in the room that’s constantly minimized or ignored.

They expect to find high end talent in FA, trades, or with the acumen of their scouting/development staff.

They are milking a gullible fanbase. Playing every side as much as possible to ensure ticket sales. Keeping alumni content, and happy.

Success is really irrelevant here.

I'm not going to get too worked up about what Jones said. I don't think it proves anything one way or another as far as the idea of rebuilding goes. The only thing I think it really is is an admission by Jones that they either lied to the players or the fans, and if they're lying to the players, that's understandable - though I don't know why you'd publicly admit it.

I'll take a page out of @JojoTheWhale's playbook and say that Seeler and Walker are the low hanging fruit. Those are the moves that every GM should be getting right. The harder to swallow moves, ie, trading Laughton last draft, moving Konecny and/or other guys who are useful now and probably for a few more years in the future - those are the ones that really tell you if they're rebuilding. You can't rebuild just by selling off spare parts and expiring contracts. You have to make some moves that hurt now with the eye on getting better in the future.

And no, that doesn't mean trade everyone and tank necessarily. It just means trying to line up the primes of the majority of your roster so they all happen at the same time.

“I like Jonesy because he’s a very stupid man who’s very upfront and clear about being a very stupid man.”
I think Jonesy is actually a pretty smart guy. I’ll gladly take leaders who actually interact with the fans and give them some insight into things over the sheltered leadership giving canned answers like Chuckles.

I do understand why teams are so hesitant to be transparent though; especially in this city. People are always looking to spin the quotes your offer in the worst possible way.

That's fine and all..but why put that out in the world we have these days with social media and all..in terms of actually trying to make moves at the TDL I feel, and just my feeling, that it puts you in a weaker position when your asks for players already seems overly high
