The diff is things and the landscape can change. Too many other variables. No need to dumb him and retain until they are legit cup contenders. Ride it out for now is the smart play.
He’s a 29 years old sheltered third pair defenseman. His value is not going up from here. He is taking a roster spot and minutes that can be used on a younger defenseman who could actually contribute when they are “legit” contenders.

The money is already wasted. If they can get a 2nd round pick by retaining they should dump him and get as much space back as possible

Really not a fan of buying Petersen out. Just use him as the backup next season.
Yeah there isn't really a need to buy him out. I don't think it would really make an impact if we did but it also just isn't necessary. Just him to the minors to save the $950k or whatever the savings is if we get a different backup or some other young goalie gets the nod there. According to Cap Friendly the buyout caphit would be $1mil then $2mil so you are saving $4mil next year and adding $3mil in dead space the year after. Just doesn't make sense for a team not in any cap trouble or roster trouble.

I've resorted to listening to PHLY a bunch this season.

I am going to rip my hair out if I hear "But the locker room" one more time.

My pitchfork is sharpened and ready for the deadline.
I know he gets a lot of crap here, but I really like Charlie. He at least gives you stats/analytics and offers a deeper dive past “he has 7 pts in his like 8 games!”

Charlie, Jordan Hall are prob my fav two.

Who said his value will go up? Certainly not I.

What younger defenseman is he taking minutes from that can contribute?

He will not garner a 2nd with retention. He is an average at best 3rd pair with zero playoff experience. When you retain you still need to replace him, say with a 1 million dollar a year player. So how much you really saving at the end of the day? Best to right now ride it into the sunset. Then reevaluate down the line.

The Flyers now have an excuse to do what they always wanted to do at the deadline, nothing.
Nothing = daily breathless updates by the usual suspects about the sky-high level of interest in several players, affirmations of tire-kicking and phone-working, cryptic comments from Tortorella, and hand-wringing as one buyer after another fills their needs elsewhere.

Maximum retention is 50% so $2.55 at least will be saved. Approximate a mil to replace him with a Phantoms defender like Attard leaving $1.5 that can be used to sign maybe a backup goalie next year so the Flyers don’t have to use Petersen. Attard if he performs well can stay on the Flyers or they can pump and dump him and make room for Bonk two seasons from now.

Options are to waste the whole $5.1 on a 3rd pair defensemen or dump him, get an extra bottom of the roster player and see what one of the young defensemen can do at the NHL level.. That’s worth it even if its a 3rd round pick.

Hayes only.
ADA was bought out.
YOu can use 2 retains on Cam and Risto and buyout Cal at the end of year.
That $3.6M retention on Hayes bugged me then and bugs me now. There had to be some harsh feelings between the club and Hayes for them to basically give him away and pay this much on top of it. Just wish that Briere could have found a less expensive way to get that piece of trash out of here.

Attard does not factor into the Flyers plans. So now if Attard plays well they can possibly trade him. Amazing.

Flyers will not do that. They very well may buy out Cal so they can use his savings on a back up.

We disagree as where the Flyers are at currently I do not see the need to dead cap space.

2.55 per is still too much for what Risto has to offer.

So with Risto out past the trade deadline -

York/Sanheim
Zamula/Drysdale
Seeler/Staal

Risto takes Staal's place when he returns.

I still think they trade Walker because he's a pending UFA. If they really want him, he can re-sign in the offseason.

It would not surprise me to see them take back another cheaper and lesser d-man and vet, on an expiring contract, in any Walker deal to soften the blow moving towards playoffs.

Ceci from Edmonton would make a good partner for zamula and is ufa next year so future trade bait

they don’t really break down the game besides like surface level stuff

There are barely any national ones let alone that kind of Flyers content. Or at least that I could ever find.

Unless you want to dig into interviews with people who actually help develop players (Hockey IQ Podcast — Hockey's Arsenal), the best you're going to do is Jack Han as a guest on something like the PDOCast with the Flyers on the runsheet.

Good recommendation. I listen to a few of these types of pods.

As per Flyers its PHLY, a bit of STG, Jordan Hall’s pod, and Flyers daily for me

Briere and Jones have been pretty clear they want another first rounder this draft. Likely increases pressure to get Walker deal done and maybe Laughton...but I don't foresee Laughton getting a first.
