And yet these outliers are their rebuilding plan. It's the equivalent of someone's financial plan being to win the lottery.
I'd like to clarify-and I'd hope people know my tendencies by now- that I was in no way endorsing the Flyers throwing shit at the walls in later rounds and praying something sticks. Just pointing out another example sort of relevant to the topic at hand of top centers outside the top of the draft. Obviously scouting and drafting in general were different then, and 2003 as a whole was an outlier draft class.

Samo did appear to be the favoured piece. However my point would be that relative to Tippett, most of us clearly preferred Denisenko. Though a few posters like Magua did highlight the shortcomings.

I know I didn't want Denisenko as anything but a throw-in, but I think an important point is Tippett and Denisenko weren't wildly different profiles: great tools that can leave you wanting. Age + NHL games was also a factor. Sometimes, the coin lands on Denisenko (who is having a good AHL year; maybe his story isn't finished) and sometimes it lands on Tippett. People can re-write Tippett's history, but he was a #10 pick -- with insane tools, who was basically the same size he is now when drafted -- who didn't stick in the NHL until his D+6 year. There was a disconnect.

I hated Tippett in his draft year, and later when I scouted Harley. He did flatline in the OHL, and that's a fact. Now, his AHL instant production? Absolute blind spot (seemingly by Florida too) -- when you produce that fast, it's a good sign. It's not like I watched Springfield Thunderbirds games. I feel like I've been upfront coming around to his positive presence -- I like watching him now -- and realizing that I got his strengths/flaws right, but I under/overestimated each respectively. I also had Necas, Vilardi, Thomas, Robertson above him, and that still looks more than fine.

The same people who want to throw eggs are the guys who thought MacEwen was better offensively than noted bust Frost last year. They have their own issues they're working through and god bless them.

Same people who thought that maybe just maybe Robert Hagg might be better offensively than Shayne Gostisbehere because Hagg leeched a handful of points early one season playing heavy minutes with the top line. Well, at least they can take comfort in the fact that Hagg was at least the better defensive player, right?

Wait, what's Hagger up to these days anyway? Oh yeah, that's right, he can't get on the ice for one of the worst defensive teams in the league.

5 buyers at the trade deadline and their available assets

A deal with the Wings would be nice if we could pick up Cossa or Wallinder and a pick. IDK what they would want from us or what the pricetag would be on both or either of those things but of the five teams listed these guys are the ones I'd want the most.

Trade Fisto if at all possible for anything.

Trade Walker and Hot Rod no matter what, this team can still sneak into the playoffs without them if that is the teams goal. Under no scenario should either be on the team after the deadline.

If they can move Risto, can always circle back to Walker in the offseason.

I've resorted to listening PHLY a bunch this season.

I am going to rip my hair out if I hear "But the locker room" one more time.

My pitchfork is sharpened and ready for the deadline.
#bucklein cuz its gunna happen

"in the end we decided we owed it to the room to not make any changes,

ps we were never rebuilding anyway suckers!!!!"..

Who is hot rod?

No team is taking Risto. Do you really want to retain 50% on him for 3 more years? I do not.

To get Ristolainen off the Flyers they are going to have to retain. What’s the difference whether it’s 3 years or 2 or 1. Who else do they need to save the retention slot for over the next two seasons while they are paying Hayes? They will still have one to use.

arent we using one on TDA?

or am i remembering that wrong

Had a chance to hear Torts speak tonight at a season ticketholder event. Was pretty eye opening and made me view him in a much more positive light. Coatesy and the fans asked him better questions than 95% of our beat writers.

He came across as very honest and humble. I’m usually pretty good at sifting through bullshit and he really seemed like he was being truthful.

He even took some responsibility for the Frost situation and while he didn’t delve into specifics, he indicated that the conversation with Frost opened his eyes to how some of his actions were being perceived and motivated him to change (as the perception didn’t match his intentions). First time I’ve really heard Torts say anything like that.

He also spoke on how coaching needs to be much more of a two way give and take conversation with each player now versus when he was first breaking into the profession and how he has learned you have to let guys be creative and be themselves on the ice and not micro-manage.

Doubt it’ll change the opinions of most in here, but it was good to hear him say these things.

Based on some things he said (this is me reading the tea leaves), I’d imagine Laughton is gone by the deadline and I think at least one of the right shot defensemen will be gone too. Risto was the only defenseman who didn’t come up at any point in any of his answers, hoping it’ll he him, but obviously Walker makes more sense.

The diff is things and the landscape can change. Too many other variables. No need to dumb him and retain until they are legit cup contenders. Ride it out for now is the smart play.
