The recent wave of injuries is one reason for Briere to be patient.

The other are a few big names like Tanev, who will have suitors, when the losers have to turn elsewhere, they'll have fewer options as they approach the TDL.

Ristolainen’s contract is not tricky at all. The Flyers are going to have to retain to move him whether this year or two seasons from now. The Flyers don’t have that many more awful contracts left to have to worry about retention slots.

I mentioned it earlier in the thread, they don't seem too keen on retaining or retaining that much because they're retaining so much on Hayes and have a buyout on DeAngelo, which the latter shouldn't matter at all since we're in a rebuild (they are not rebuilding)

Dead cap space is meaningless even if they aren’t rebuilding. What high price free agent is going to want to come here without Michkov? Even waiving Ristolainen doesn’t matter because the small savings they get from dumping him in the minors would pretty much pay for an entry level NHL defenseman from the Phantoms.

The only reason to not dump Ristolainen is because they actually like him as a player.

We going to act like EP, Miro, or “lucky bounce” Makar would have been stars if we selected them? We know the team is cursed. It wouldn’t have mattered who we got. If Mario Lemieux was on the Flyers he would have died of cancer in the 90’s. That’s just how things are
Totally understand where you're coming from but if the player is good enough they will develop just fine. See Giroux's career and couturier once he requested to play up the line up. Michkov will be fine but his career would flourish quicker outside Philly

What's the rush to dump Risto? His play has been fine this season on the third pair, now we'll get to see him on the second pair with Sanheim.

Given the lack of size and experience on defense, there's no rush to dump Seeler or Risto unless someone makes "an offer you can't refuse." Walker is redundant to some extent, and they're not going to pay him big money, so he's a logical candidate to move at the TDL.

Keeping Risto buys a year or two to see how Bonk and Attard progress, if they are pushing for PT at RHD, Risto will be much easier to move next TDL or summer with only two years left on his deal and the cap rising.

It would be one thing if people were offering a 1st rd pick, but that's far more likely next summer. By summer 2025, the cap will be $8M higher than this season, so that 2x5 won't be that hard to move.

Risto has become a solid RHD.

People continue to act like he’s Keith Yandle.

Here's what I don't like....we are once again bundling all of our eggs into the Trade Deadline and Draft baskets. You have to find ways throughout the year to start moving the needle so that you focus on one or two larger scale deals at those times. So take advantage of Tampa's injury situation for example. If you can offload Walker, Seeler or Risto do it....weaponize your capspace while you do it...you are getting relief from Hart's contract on top of what you already have.

Can't imagine Yandle was used much in the final minute with the Flyers holding a one-goal lead - as Ristolainen was Tuesday night. I don't understand the venom he recieves.

I went to the grocery store this morning. On my drive, I hit 4 cars, 3 poles, 2 dogs, and a nun. But when I got home, I carried all of the bags inside in one trip. I’m a bag specialist. I don’t understand why everyone’s angry.

(They’ve legitimately transformed him into a fine 3rd pairing guy, albeit by cutting his offensive balls off. I have nothing against him as a player. The problem is the cap hit and the inanity of the discussions around him.)

No birds? Cause you know they're all government drones because you're contracted to work on em?

@Striiker

As much as I love tk, this person isn't wrong
I think it depends on what else is going. I wouldn't trade him just to trade him and I don't know what a package for him would look like. I think it also matters what other moves we make. If we do nothing big sell-wise and extend him, then yeah it's the same shit as every year. If we jettison other major things and amass young talent/draft picks then signing him as the piece who will be at the end of his career when things happen but still contributing then I don't think it is that big of a deal.

This is something I harp on because of how dumb it is.

Waiting is bad unless you are trading a singularly unique and attractive asset that teams think is valuable enough to try to win a bidding war over. Stone or Eichel, in recent memory. Guys who can change a team in the short or long term.

For a regular old deadline rental, simple economics come into play. There are a finite number of teams willing to give up premium assets for a rental. Once the top name is off the board, there are fewer teams in the running and thus fewer assets available, meaning the price goes down, not up.

Your best bet is to try to set the market and get your trade off early, not wait around and hope some GM wakes up one morning and goes "well, we weren't a buyer yesterday, but today I think we are one Sean Walker away from the Finals!" It doesn't work that way.

He’s a 3rd pair 5 million dime a dozen d man.

Not what rebuilding or contending teams want.
I don’t care if they trade him, but Risto is better than dime-a-dozen. I’m sure there are plenty of contenders who’d like to have him on their right side.

I'm hoping for better than "solid" for over $5M a year (not to mention the 1st, two seconds, and PPQB they've been looking to replace ever since that it cost to get him). Gudas was better, didn't cost the draft capital, and before this season, would've come at almost half the salary.

Love Gudas' hardness but he's not close to the player that Risto is. He's a complimentary but limited piece.

Five million for a defenseman with Ristolainen's skill set in his 11th season is about average.

That is why it isn't that important to move Risto with retention at the moment. You can ride his contract out at this point. I would not retain unless a very good deal. Not a cup contender so Risto doesn't kill you.

There is a rush to move Seeler, or do you just let him walk?

Just because the cap is going up doesn't mean a GM will waste on Risto. They won't. A 1st rd pick. Funny.

Stop with the Attard fluffing. He is a none factor going forward.
