They'll settle for something like a 2nd and 4th.

But Briere doesn't bid against himself, there's no reason to lower your price until someone makes a serious counter offer.

A decade of mediocrity.

Holmgren blew two chances to rebuild properly, once after the Carter/Richards trades, once after 2018-19. Instead he hired CF and told him to "win now."
Hextall started a rebuild at the 2015 TDL, then stalled, then traded Schenn in the summer of 2017, then stalled, then got fired.
Barber was Scott's chief advisor.
Clarke was the puppet master.
So a dysfunctional origination with no real direction is what your saying?

Barber has no skin in it, if Scott listened to him than that is on Scott and Scott only. Clarke still gets blame for the last decade of ineptitude? Guess he is a good fall back for some to blame.

Does Chuck Fletcher get any blame?

Why not Walker and 3rd/4th for a 1st?

"Market value" is what the market pays.

Ghost was not a 1st and 2nd pair D-man at that point, he played that role in Arizona b/c the other D-men were injured or worse, he's been a 3rd D-man in Carolina and Detroit (15:09 at ES, 5th on the team, 11 seconds a game more than Maatta).

He was a cap dump in the sense that LA retained on Provorov to make him palatable to CBJ, then the Flyers took Walker to match that retention. From the Flyer perspective, he was a no cost addition since he allowed them to dump Provorov's contract and preserve the retention slot.

You're presuming the market is infallible and poor negotiation/valuation has no impact.

I know you realize that isn't true.

Too complex.

Can only move players in 1:1 deals.

The cavemen that run the Flyers haven’t evolved to such fancy GM’ing

"Briere is going to bid against himself.

But also, Briere doesn't bid against himself"

You're hilarious. You can't be serious.

Clarke was the one behind hiring Fletcher.

Walker and ??? for a 1st depends on finding a team willing to trade a 1st.
Same with landing a top prospect.

Going through Wheeler's farm system reviews, the worst 9 teams so far are mostly SC contenders - the most likely candidates to pay through the nose.

After years of arguing against this, it’s nice to see you acknowledge it.

As a baseline, any trade that is net-negative for total assets is not ideal for a rebuilding* team.

*This regime still needs to prove they are committed to a rebuild.
I do not necessary agree with that as we all know 1st rd picks have a higher rate to be an NHL player.

Agree on the rebuild part.

So far, Briere has added 1st, (2) 2nds, 5th, 6th, Grans (21), Rizzo (22), Poehling (25) and whatever they obtain for Walker.

Until he starts trading picks and prospects for rentals at the TDL, I'll consider this a "rebuild."

The point is that if they have to add to Walker to get a first, like in your example, then they should be targeting at least as many assets coming back. Try to get a second draft pick instead of settling for just the 1st.

Volume of draft picks is an underappreciated art in the NHL.

If the option was Walker for a 2nd and 4th
or
Walker and 4th for a 1st, what you prefer? Me I go with option 2.

More volume is good, not disputing that at all. I always wondered why GM's don't try to acquire more late rd picks as I bet many GM's do not value them at all. When making a trade just say will do it if you include your 5th in 20xx. How many times will a trade fall through for that type of small ask?

A treasure trove indeed.
Not a bad start, considering he's been on the job for less than a year.
Basically what Hextall got for Kimmo and Coburn.
Then Hextall declared "mission accomplished" until the summer of 2017, when he realized the rebuild wasn't finished.

Volume is necessary. Just look at the Flyers 2nd round pick the last 6-7 years. Lots of nothing...

8. Philadelphia can extend Travis Konecny on July 1, but the Flyers are trying to get the legwork done sooner. You’re going to see a real attempt at this. The prediction is Nick Seeler stays, and Jamie Drysdale’s arrival puts Sean Walker on the move (Edmonton and Tampa Bay are among interested parties). Rasmus Ristolainen’s stock is up, but the contract is tricky.

9. That brings us to Scott Laughton. The first-rounders going for rental centres have GMs thinking. If you’re Pat Verbeek (Adam Henrique), you’re smiling at the market, with several teams looking for middlemen. (The Rangers are looking for two of them. Going to be watching Tyler Johnson, now off injured reserve.) What that’s also done is bring out the managers who have a centre with term. Those include Nic Dowd and Laughton. The latter’s down three minutes a game from last year, and is at his lowest playing time in four seasons. If that’s the future, a move is better for everyone. I would expect teams to call on Boone Jenner, for the same reason. But he’s got a partial no-trade and you can’t see Columbus doing it without a massive return.
