Where you from?

All three are super cosmopolitan.
Montreal is an interesting city. It's also on more NTC lists than all but 2 markets in the league. Highest taxes, language and organized crime being the likely culprits for it. Only Winnipeg and Ottawa are on more lists. My guess is that will change moving forward with the Jets being good now (Oilers used to be top 3, as they got better they aren't anymore) and Ottawa having less disfunction in ownership. Montreal will likely become the least desirable market in the league.

I think this is true for the Alberta teams, Winnipeg, Ottawa etc but not really nearly as true for Vancouver, Montreal and Toronto. Alberta and Winnipeg especially are at the biggest disadvantage here.

I don't disagree but Winnipeg at least has typically had a good amount of non-Canadians staying long-term, especially Americans (e.g. Wheeler, Byfuglien, Connor, Hellebuyck).

Guys it's an example. I'm not picking on Calgary specifically.

Edmonton, Ottawa, Winnipeg, whatever take your pick. Hell include Buffalo in there.

If I'm a fit rich athlete I'm not choosing these places unless there are unique circumstances. That's just reality
Exactly. OBVIOUSLY if I were drafted by WPG, CGY, EDM, OTT, BUF, NYI, or CBJ, I’d be grateful for the opportunity and happily play there. Assuming I’m given a choice however, I’d much rather play in a bigger city with more to do and nicer weather.

Yeah some guys like hiking/fishing/whatever and can appreciate those things but I’d bet most guys in their twenties want to be out parting and picking up girls. It’s not strictly a Canadian thing in that regard.

The “can’t handle the pressure” argument is pretty laughable. I think Canadian team’s incompetence has a far greater effect. I highly doubt a player wouldn’t want to play for a Canadian team if they’re contending for Cups every year, pressure be damned. They probably don’t want to have to deal with the pressure while being on a team doomed to go nowhere though. That wouldn’t be very fun. That’s true in all sports though. Players want to go to the team with the best combo of: weather + availability of hot women + likelihood of winning a championship.

Maybe this is a sign we see less Canadian teams in the future. Maybe only VAN, TOR, and MTL are suitable options. Which would really suck, as I don’t want to any fans to lose a team.

Citation needed.

And this has to be the first time that I hear of the Italian mob keeping NHL players away from Montreal.

I'm guessing Tony Soprano did a number on the Devils too back in the day.

It’s top 5 favorite place to play in according to the recent athletic poll of nhl players, behind LA and New York.

A pending UFA vetoes a 2-3 month rental to a Cdn cup contender? I don't see it.

I'm talking about NTC clauses, not favorite road cities. Montreal is a favorite road city. It's also one of the top NTC cities.

There are plenty of American cities ain't nobody wanna go to either. I wouldn't move to Columbus for a 500% pay increase.

Columbus is actually a fun city since its a huge college town. Its all young people, sports, bars, music, etc.

Its not glitzy, but there are definitely worse places to spend your 20s

I have a feeling that if an American were to waive to go to any city, it would be Vancouver first and foremost, so using Vancouver as an example ITT isn't really fair to the other Canadian teams who are battling against a different circumstance WRT attracting players.

People often talk about the tax advantages of playing in the States... but what about the advantages of playing in Canada and being paid in American dollars but all your cost of living and everything you pay for while playing in Canada is paid in Canadian dollars? That is quite an advantage there.

House prices in Canada are way higher than most markets in US. New York as an example is higher but I read a comparison not long ago and it’s crazy how much more homes cost in Canada.

But don't most of these players rent homes rather than buy homes where they play? Even so, if they did purchase a home, they often make back their money or even more when they sell it in the future.

Weird thing to say after 2 Canadian teams just made pretty significant trade acquisitions.
yes but with each other.

I'd imagine media attention being a fat bigger problem for players than the actual cities.
This is probably it. Lionel f***ing Messi sometimes goes grocery shopping in Miami.

Facts. If money isn't a deciding factor, you start looking at other things. I don't want to be hounded by crazies everytime I go out for dinner with my GF or wife. I bet most guys don't want 40 microphones in their face everytime they finish practice etc.

If an Edmonton or Winnipeg are a cup contender and they're willing to pay a little more, or you have family ties there then yes you consider them but otherwise it's not a top choice. Most here recognize that.
