It boiled down to him using a toilet once, and a lineup of fans were waiting for him outside of his stall to autograph cards and their cast while he was taking a shit. He just didn't want that relentless attention anymore.

Hope these fans were children. Imagine being an adult and waiting outside of a public toilet for another adult to finish his job, just because you want his signature on a card or something, yikes.

Alright, I laughed a hell of a lot.

With that said, I'm pretty sure I'd take Toronto/Montreal/Vancouver over 90 percent of NHL American cities.
As Canadian who live in Toronto and Vancouver I would take Edmonton or Calgary over them any day of the week. Also I mention weather in a previous post but I would also rather the cold weather than the risk of earth quakes and hurricanes. There pros and cons both ways but if a player is drafted by an American team and he meets an American woman and gets married he going to go happy wife happy life and stay in the USA. I never even got into the tax advantage of some states

He was a pending UFA, but when Jeff Petry was traded to Montreal, him and his wife absolutely adored it. They really embraced the city and everything it had to offer and Petry was about as proud as anybody could be to wear that jersey and represent the city.

Obviously the tight pandemic rules made things extremely difficult for them, especially his wife to the point where they asked for a trade.

Toffoli signed with the Habs (He's Canadian) and his wife (although has a French name) is absolutely American and from California. They loved the city as well and were sad to leave. Every time the Devils play in Montreal his wife posts pictures and videos of the city.

Honestly it really depends on what you're looking for. If your only criteria is low taxes and year 'round mild weather, then Montreal ain't for you. ...But if you enjoy culture, amazing food, great architecture, cool vibe and and full hockey experience, then Montreal is one of the best markets in the NHL.

To each their own.
exactly

Doug Weight and Bill Guerin loved it in Edmonton, unfortunately, the Oilers were a small market team pre-cap era and couldn't afford them

How is this an argument at this point? All things being equal (and that equal is enough money to live in the top 1%) those individuals will always choose better weather and a fancier lifestyle.

Not surprising that some of these guys don’t want to be in Winnipeg, Edmonton, Calgary, and even Montreal to a lesser extent. Not shitting on those cities but it is what it is at this point.

again, I'll ask...like who?
The pool of players you're talking about -- star UFAs not from Canada -- is far too small to give any useful information about where players want to sign. You're advancing an argument without even bothering to think it through.

Wow, its too bad these teams dont have control of every player they draft til they’re like 27 or something to help insulate them from this issue.

Oh wait…

Sucks to suck. Draft better, build better, most players will suck it up and put up with bad weather and high taxes to win. You think Chicago or New York are tropical paradises with zero income tax?

What free agents were clamoring to go to Tampa or Florida when they were rudderless messes?

Yuuuuuuup. It's a shitty excuse.

Nope.

And I probably know like 50 adults in their 40s who would do that to McDavid or Draisaitl.

pretty impressive then what the Oilers have done lately considering they have to compete with all the big name UFAs bolting for Vancouver, Montreal and Toronto over the past few years :sarcasm:
Oilers are doing great, and then you have Winnipeg and Vancouver too. Exciting times for Canada, I think one of these teams will return the Cup to Canada, and honestly I’m here for it

Not going to speak on the other Canadian cities but the only American cities with an NHL team that are 'fancier' than Toronto/Montreal/Vancouver are probably NYC, LA (I guess you can also include the Bay Area with SJ) and Chicago depending on which ones were talking about.

Toronto dwarfs both Montreal and Vancouver but a place like Montreal is 100 percent on par with cities like Philadelphia or Boston.

Can't believe how someone would want to be that famous.

I also wonder if this is a reason as to why Pettersson's allegedly wants out of Van. Guy always looks super uncomfortable with the press.

I wonder which player(s) this is in reference to. Most of the names floating out there don't seem to have clauses that I can tell.

Pettersson has stated he loves Vancouver, the guy is an athlete and wants to play for a competitive team. Something he didn’t get to do under the Benning reign

You're talking about Québec (la ville). Not Montreal. You can live in Montreal without ever being exposed to French if you can afford earphones.
There are a lot of jobs available for english only speakers in downtown or west island. No french needed and I see remote positions for US companies written in english on french websites. There is a demand for being fluent in english with no accent

Just saw his hit on NHL network during the All-Star festivities

He mentioned he has spoken to 1-2 Canadian Team GMs who have expressed that they might be handcuffed because alot of the players they are targeting have some Canadian teams on their "No Trade Clauses"

Also reflected on how the two big trades so far Lindholm, Monahan are from Canadian to Canadian teams because those players dont mind playing in Canada and perhaps why Canucks and Jets targeted them.

Mentioned how Kuzmenko had Calgary and other Canadian Teams on his no trade clause but luckily waived it to eventually allow the trade to Calgary.

Thoughts?

Is this going to be a problem for Canadian contending teams at this years trade deadline?
Is that what no trade clauses means? Who knew?
