I was really hoping he'd stay and become a local legend like Leaf players used to be, but unfortunately we couldn't do any winning. This is not a player you like to lose, its a big loss, and in the cap world it happens. No cap limit, its not question you keep him. But this is the NHL and thats why its the most competitive league.

Liked Zach a lot, seems like an extremely good person and worked his sack off every day. Not much skill but had speed and wasn’t scared of anything. At the end of the day, this was definitely the time to see him move on. Can’t complain after trading Greg McKegg (basically nothing) for him.

Every time I see the Energizer Bunny in that tv ad I think Hyman!

He showed up for every shift and showed he loves the game.
Just a real shame it did not rub off on the 3 young guns who are still all ME guys.
At least now will enjoy watching the Oilers when on the late game on Saturdays.

Definitely a fan favorite. Big, hard working, fast and kept improving. Seemed like a great person off the ice too from the little I've read / heard. Wish him the best with the Oilers.

Zach appreciates us, the fans, too.
Dear Leafs Nation,

February 29th, 2016, is a date I’ll never forget.

It was the day of my first ever NHL game and the day I officially became a Toronto Maple Leaf. I’ll always remember pausing before putting my jersey on for the first time and reflecting on how special and lucky I was.
Ever since I was a kid my dream was to play for the Toronto Maple Leafs. And in that moment, it became reality.

Like most of you, I grew up a Leafs fan. I went to games at the ACC and idolized my favorite Leafs like Mats Sundin, Gary Roberts, and Darcy Tucker. I cheered on the team through the exciting playoff runs of the early 2000s and the disappointing years when we didn’t make the playoffs.
Because I grew up here, I understood how incredibly lucky I was to have the opportunity to play for the Leafs. I knew that I wasn’t just living out my dream but the dreams of all my friends and of every little kid that falls in love with his team.

Throughout my time in Toronto I can undoubtedly say that every time I put on that sweater I gave everything I had. I want to thank all of you for supporting me, motivating me, and believing in me.
The passion that exudes from Leafs Nation is contagious, and its one of the best places in the world to play because you guys care. So thank you for your continued support, thank you for investing yourselves in the team, and thank you for making a Toronto boy’s dream come true.

I’m excited about joining the Edmonton Oilers in the next chapter of my life, but I’ll always call Toronto home.
Zach Hyman

Loved Zach Hyman over his tenure here.

But there is no way on earth having watched him over the years I would give him a contract anywhere near that.

The one good part about Dubas screwing up our cap is that he doesn't have the ability to get in on all of these awful UFA contracts.

We will miss his tenacity and work ethic. Two traits we lack as a roster.
For the money and term he got in Edmonton, it was clear he was going to leave.
Best of luck, Zack. Except against us.

Wish we could’ve found a way to keep him.

I am happy that he didn’t become the one who gave the hometown discount. It should never have been him, especially considering the fact that far more talented players who didn’t give a hometown discount themselves don’t come close to giving even a tenth of the effort he does. I would’ve walked away from these spineless cowards as well if they asked me to be the guy to take a hit on my contract.

Great player. Great tenacity.

I wish him well.

Hope his body holds up for the term he got.

Man what a motor! He took a lot of flak here from some and he showed everyone he deserved to be in the top 6. Two coaches, both found their son. There is no replacing a Hyman, he’s over paid now, but what a treat to watch. As a early backer of his heart, I’ll miss you man!!!!

He will get a standing o when he returns.
