He's really been a shot in the arm for this team.
He’s been quite good. Especially when our bats seem to have cooled off. Big part of our two wins in the series

I think with all the deadline talk we are all also sleeping on picking up DeJesus. Adding Smith and a new top 10 prospect in our system was a solid play.

2 out of 3 is a must in Baltimore. Losing the series is unacceptable. They have to bury this team. Can’t believe Baltimore is only 4 games back.

They’ve been one of/if not the best team in baseball since June. Really have turned their season around. Going to be another tough series, especially how cold our bats have been

My understanding is he can but before the ball is there he can't be in the lane.

He was standing in the lane the entire time before the ball got there. Which is what I am gathering was wrong here.

Seems like it. Sanchez set up his left leg semi-blocking the plate before the ball got there. And once it did he dropped his knee.

Merrifield was smart to go right at it and try to get that call.

Merrifield basically admitted to cheating the rule, and now will have a target on his back by teams

How did he admit to cheating the rule? He said he knew Sanchez had a tendency to block the plate so he just made it as a blatant as possible what Sanchez was doing when he slid.

He cheated the rule, or used the rule to his advantage. Basic cheating. Whatever you want to call it, hate it when player's do this

Ha, what?

The rule is the rule. If anyone's "cheating" it's the one who broke the rule, not the one who exposed it.

Merrifield just slid into the leg blocking the plate instead of going around it so that it's easier for the ump to see that it's blocking. If he didn't, they might not have realized the leg was left in the way. That really isn't cheating, it's almost the opposite. It's helping the umpire make the correct call according to the rulebook

He did the correct thing. He took the quickest path to the plate to maximize his chances of being safe. If Sanchez had played the situation correctly, Merrifield is safe. Sanchez knew that and tried to cheat.

He didn't cheat the rule. Cheating the rules would have involved running Sanchez over (which would have sparked an even bigger debate because the Jays could have argued that he wouldn't have been run over if he wasn't blocking the plate).

So Baldelli is upset that the umps called the rule correctly because he believes that it is inconsistently applied (even though it is not inconsistently applied, it is just rarely applicable)?

Sounds like an entitled man-child who is setting a spectacular example for his team.

How did he skirt the rule. Like was said, it’s not up to Merrifield to make sure Sanchez is playing his position properly. Actually Merrifield was doing the opposite of cheating and making sure the umpire/replay booth made the right call.

"skirting the rule"

Show me the rule where it says when the catcher is blocking the plate the runner has to try to slide around him. Here's a hint: It doesn't exist. Merrifield is allowed to slide wherever he wants as long as he's not running over the catcher or using his slide to trip him up to break up a double play potential(different rule). He's allowed to slide directly into home plate to make it obvious the catcher is blocking.

That would be like saying when the catcher has his glove too far forward during a pitch interfering with your swing you're not allowed to swing and hit his glove to draw a catchers interference call. Instead you shouldn't swing and hope the umpire sees it or swing above the glove which will result in you swinging and missing the pitch. In both case it won't be called, it's only called when you actually hit the catchers glove in the down swing
