Trading an infield prospect (surplus) for good arms (biggest need) was exactly what we needed to be doing. Bass and Pop are good major league relievers. Even if Bass isn’t this good he’s much better then he was a couple years ago. I like the bullpen depth. We have a good team and the farm doesn’t take to much of a hit here. Another starter would be nice but if nothing happens we fixed our biggest issue.

I am a longtime fan but not nearly as knowledgeable about baseball as many here so forgive the naivety of my question, If you are the Jays wouldn't the offseason be a better time to go all in on a guy like Otahni if the Angel's decide to move him? I ask because he seems like the perfect add to fit the needs of this team. The cost will be high of course but perhaps a little less in the off season than now and if it means someone off the roster it is less disruptive. I don't think they have what it takes to go all the way this year even with Othani. But maybe with a little tweaking of the rotation and some additional work on the pull pen that would change next year if you could get him.

Beyond that is he a legitimate possible target in the off season and if so what might the price be?

In any case, you don't want him going to the Yankees.

Very cautious deadline. Groshans for obvious reasons. Looks like Jays aren’t offering anything much better. We can always look at changes in the winter.

This site tends to do this when their model is off, so take it with a grain of salt. Could be a fair trade, could be an overpay, could be something else

Wasnt a big fan of this trade. Thought Groshans would get us something better but when you take a deeper dive, it starts to make sense though it still might be a slight overpayment;

Didnt realize how great of a season Bass is having and that he has a club option for next year worth $3M, dirt cheap.

bWAR;
Manoah: 3.3
Bass 1.6
Gausman: 1.4
Romano: 1.4
Stripling: 1.3

fWAR:
Gausman: 3.8
Manoah: 2.5
Stripling: 1.9
Bass: 1.4
Romano: 0.6

Top Pitch Velo - mph:
Romano: 96.6
Pop: 96.5
Bass: 95.2

Gausman: 95.0
Kikuchi: 94.8
Garcia: 94.7

Bass is a legit arm to add now and Pop has some long term value with heat he throws and the slider.

Also wonder Barger gets the call to take Groshans' spot.

Groshans hype isn't the same Groshans hype as it was 2 years ago. His development hasn't just stagnated in the minors it's completely tanked

He wasn’t gonna play here anyway. He is blocked by Bo. Unless he plays other positions?
3B is his likely long-term position. But we have Chapman for 1 more year and who knows if Orelvis Martinez ends up a 3B long term or not. We also drafted Tucker Toman who profiles as a long-term 3B.

They likely could extend Chapman for a few more years and let the prospects develop and see what they have. But Groshans has zero power for 2 seasons, so he would not have been ready to replace Chapman in a year either way.

He's probably a 3B, where he's blocked by Chapman for the next 1.5 and also Victor as well. In general, our farm is flush with quality infield prospects.

So if Iglesias and Thor are both added who's the odd man out? Assuming Richards and Thornton are off the roster.

Starters:
Berrios
Gausman
Kikuchi
Manoah
Stripling
Syndergaard

Relievers:
Cimber
Garcia
Mayza
Phelps
Romano
Bass
Pop
Iglesias

Someone would need to be moved off. Mayza hasn't been great but him and Kikuchi are the only left handers on the roster.

Per sources, prices on remaining starting pitchers market (Rodin/Mahle and apparently Eovaldi) is "sky high"

That last name is super intriguing to me if they can somehow talk Boston down. His stats are okay for this season but that's a guy who dials in come October. Perfect 3rd or 4th starter.

looks good but damn we really need a good LH starter. 5 righties is meh (not counting Kikuchi cause hes unreliable as hell)

who has options among the group? Just Pop and Manoah?

Ya I would have liked a bigger upgrade BUT I am fine. Seems we have a few pen arms. Hopefully there reliable moving forward. Would have loved a L bat and solid top 3 SP. See how it plays out. Then deal with issues in the winter.
