I always wanted to know what an Opening Ceremony looks like in a really poor country.

(crosses off "things to ponder" list).

Is this the first time a significant chunk of an Opening Ceremony was overtly political?

Cant say I ever remember something like this before with a huge Global Warming segment, etc...

They focused on the melting polar ice cap, but I wonder why they didn't mention antarctic ice? I mean, it's almost like they dont know that a spherical earth has two poles. Hmmmm........well....I'm sure that's just an honest and coincidental omission.

Probably honest, coincidental omission similar to the omission of the fact ice loss in the Arctic is greater than gain in the Antarctic.

No, definitely not; like about 12 to 20 other coincidental/unilateral omissions in same piece.

It's because penguins are old hat and Polar Bears are the new ****.

That or they think Ancient Aliens was right to say the melting ice in Antartica is caused by buried alien cities turning on.

Russia was allowed afterall

Total BS.

A sports entity connected with blatant pee-pee passing in Sochi should have been banned. I feel like Putin gets away with whatever the **** he wants to. No wonder the Russian people revere him, even if it's in some sort of creepy totalitarian "untouchable gangster" sort of a way.

Rio Opening Ceremony was terrible, including a reference to the "city of Florida" during one of our after-school specials about the harms of global warming. I quit watching after the US entered in the Parade of Nations. Couldn't take any more.

i dont even have time to sit and watch the farce……with the russia dope news and the joke of a "refugee nation" competing …..wow……the allure of me as a young kid looking forward to the olympics is dead.

i might be more entertained if there was another munich '72 hostage takeover …but then again, all that stuff is 'normal' now and im bored with it all and dont really give a **** it seems

You sound like my dad. He's also beyond the point of caring about the Olympics.

I still like to watch if only to criticize.

The most loathsome part of tonight was the fact that NBC tape delayed it by 1 hour, which makes no sense given Rio is only 1 hour offset from EDT.

Here's the networks official response:

"We think it's important to give the context to the show. This opening ceremony will be a celebration of Brazilian culture, of Rio, of the pageantry, the excitement, of the flare that this beautiful nation has. We think it's important that we're able to put that in context for the viewer so it's not just a flash of color. And so we will air that on a one-hour delay."

Riiiiiiiiiggggghhhhhhtttttt............

I'm sure it has absolutely nothing to do with being able to have a 60 minute lead time to knowing when the best options are for carving up the broadcast and inserting commercials (you know.....the thing they make money on).

Another absurd political nod.

A "refuge" team? Really?

I don't have much time to watch the olympics, it's why I gave up on baseball years ago. I spend most of my free time in the NHL offseason being outdoors.

Even if I'm at home, I'm usually in the pool or something. I like to be outdoors during NHL season too and where I live allows me to be for most of the year, but hockey is my first love, so I am more than fine sitting inside for that.

The last time I seriously watched the summer Olympics was 1996. I had a crush on a bunch of the gymnastics girls. I even thought the dream team was cool, I think I followed basketball a little more than casually back then.

Do NBA players even participate in the summer olympics anymore? That's how out of touch I am with the whole thing.

Ah, I have the same memories while I was a hormone crazed teen. I don't think I missed a single women's gymnastics event:laugh:

Yeah, though it doesn't have the same appeal. Most of the elite players already play on the same NBA team.

I couldn't watch. The IOC went down the same path as MLB with it's overt cognitive dissonance. I just don't care anymore

My buddy's brother is down there now working for the press. He says Rio is gross. The entire city smells like sewage and the pollution is awful. The dedicated press room (see room with just lots of tables and chairs), which holds over 500 people, has 1 toilet.

I wanted to watch the torch lighting and maybe some of the samba dancing but they kept delaying...and delaying...and delaying. It was supposed to end at midnight but after midnight there was no end in sight. Finally I went to sleep and taped the rest, I couldn't take it anymore. Turned out it only lasted twenty minutes more but sheesh I had a real long day and wanted to get to bed.

The refugee nation thing is definitely political, there's always been athletes screwed over by wars and hostile takeovers. Almost seems like the only reason this team exists now is cause this is the most criticized Olympics ever with the Zika/bad water/other problems. And unless any of these ten athletes are long distance runners I doubt any have a serious chance at a medal anyway.

I'll watch the womens USA soccer games and thats it. Just don't care about any of the other summer sports.

I read an article that they have about 1.5+ million tickets unsold.
