He still young and still trying to figure it out. Historically, bigger players are slow to start.
Hopefully for the team and the fans that he figures it out sooner than later otherwise it can become concerning.

He will. Loosing his spot for no reason to freaking Dach, didnt help though.
From what I've read here,many thought Dach would be better or equal to Suzuki.

Yes last year before he lost a full year to a knee injury. Now we have people saying he's throwaway trash 10 games into a season.

Suzuki and Caufield are wallflowers. "Slaf" is expected to dig pucks out of the corners while those two prance around. Of course he's going to get lumped up. I'm honesty done with Suzuki as a captain. Its my opinion as a fan,

Pretty sure I read it much more recently than that, probably during camp. Regardless of when it was read or posted Dach has to be better than he has been to verify what he is. IIRC he was ready to go if Montreal made the playoffs, not that that was ever in the cards, but if he was, why so slow to get back as it's been a while. All the years of playing hockey and coaching, don't recall any forgetting how to play as that is how Montreal has appeared. Everyone pretty much just stepped right back in to what they were the previous seasons, perhaps it's how the train and practice as from what I've seen, they always appear slower and less intense than the opponents, until the match against New Jersey.

He needs to be our Tage Thompson. That’s what he should be. I’m sorry but he’s pretty much invisible this year so far. 1 goal in 13 games or whatever? That’s not acceptable. Not after his second half last year.

Not to mention Tage literally had a very mediocre season last year after putting up 94 the year before. Progression isn't just a straight upward pointing arrow, even when players set a new standard, they take some time to equalize.

Tage Thompson was also a 27th overall and panned under a different organization. Yes patience but I'm not sure he's a good example.
Slaf will be fine, I'm not concerned with his play. He'd do much better with Suzuki anyway.

I don't selection rank matter in this context.
Unless we are dealing with the crazy expectation that 1OA should be absolutely able to match a 25 years old star because it's his third year. Just from the one I can think of quickly: Laf, Hughes, Hischier, MacKinnon couldn't.

Not match, but surely the ROI needs to be greater, otherwise why did we pick him first? That either happens with certainty or quality, not sure Slaf provides any of those but it was a bad year so.
Anyway, premature thread he's going to be fine, it's just that drawing such conclusions doesn't prove anything, you could also use Hugh Specimen as an example and the comparison would be of similar value. IE none.

He'll be a good consistent player... one day. It's going to take a lot of time. Hopefully ppg on a yearly basis but what horrible luck to end up picking 1st overall in the weakest draft in history.
On top of that looking at the next 2 years you have two hall of fame talents. To top it off the next year the Canadiens draft a dman whose potential might be a 2nd pair dman.
Just two years wasted without an elite superstar to build your franchise. whereas all the elite teams of the past end up needing less time to rebuild. This will take half a decade before this team even competes.
Don't see this team competing for a playoff spot for at least 3-5 years. The worst part with Slafkovsky is he's not exciting to watch at all. There's beer leaguers in Saint Leonard that will bring more excitement.

Well it's not about Slaf being fine or not. It's mostly about how easy it is to like Tage Thompson (and many other players tbh) if you were allowed to skip the 4 years he spent struggling to establish himself.

It's a bit disappointing that he hasn't continued his encouraging progression from last year into this year, especially given the contract he received.
He's clearly not yet able to be the engine on a line and is falling back into bad habits we saw at the beginning of his sophomore season.
Yet this is a player who has shown he can take leaps forward mid season. Leave him with Suzuki where he has shown the most progress.
