Hughes is not a generational player. There have like 20-25 in NHL history, and he ain’t going to be one of them.

If the Rangers take him, he has the potential to be the best player in franchise history. Still won’t make him generational unless he wins multiple Cups, multiple Harts, multiple Rosses - as in three or four or more.
Hughes is definitely not a generational talent...but imho Henrik is.

If Henrik is and Hughes isn't..then Hughes by definition can not be the best player in franchise history

this is a dumb conversation that's been had several times already in these threads. "generational" means different things to different people, let's just leave it at that. Instead, I'd say that I think it's doubtful that either Hughes or Kakko is the best player in the league in any one season which puts them below players like Crosby in the "how good are they" chart

I'd say

Crosby
Ovechkin
Richard
Gretz
Lemieux
Orr
Howe
Hasek
Lidstrom

Some other players on the borderline (Harvey, Potvin, both Hulls, etc), also might have forgotten someone obvious, but that's about what my list would look like.

Jagr?

I think he fits the bill more than most of those guys. Dude was the freak of all freaks.

Brian Leetch. Elite since day 1, last D man to score 100 points, dude is underrated even by Rangers fans smh

He has the most wins... and saves. Did I miss something??? I'm no fan but jeez

I think it gets kind of subjective but to me he was a talented and good goalie but massively massively benefited from playing most of his career behind some insane rosters and players. There was barely a time in his career that he wasn't on a good to great team. Of course he was part of those teams and helped them win the cups they did and all that, but stuff like the wins record and all that is kind of pointless to use as a reason for him being an all time great or generational. You can be the most talented goalie ever and get stuck with a bad team for most of your career and never sniff a wins record ors omething

That's like 250 years worth of generations, there should be approximately 4 generational players in 100 years. Human generation is 20 to 30 years on average.

While I understand your argument, I'd say a hockey generation is ~10 years (22-32). And you can have generational players in different positions

I mean the semantics of these types of conversations aside, it’s still absolutely bonkers to me that we’ll be drafting a prospect with the potential to be the best skater (to keep Hank out of the convo) in the entire history of an Original 6 franchise.

This team has definitely waited long enough and earned it. I don’t care what anyone else says.

The only Generational players I have seen are Crosby, Lemiux and McDavid and these only reached that status for a few seasons. I think Crosby should have been much more than he was but concussions killed him. McDavid could still reach his full potential and give Wayne a run for his money but its not gonna happen in Edmonton. In fact I have never ever seen a more naturally talented player with god given ability to play hockey as McDavid. Gretzky was beyond generational he was godly when you look at his numbers. As far as defensemen go only Orr is a generational talent in my mind and there are no generational goalies. There are a bunch of defensemen and goaltenders at the level just below generational. And of course forwards of elite caliber like Jagr, Ovechkin, Howe, Bure, etc etc are also below generational.

Id say Hughes’ skating can be generational and Kakko’s puck control can be generational

Just like Kane’s hands are generational

This generational thing is one of the stupidest discussion I've ever seen around here.
Everybody have a different opinion, and every opinion have the same value.
Move on, guys.

  • I think there's some chance that Kakko turns out similar to Jagr but it's not a big chance--keeping in mind too that Jagr went 5th overall in his draft year and I don't think too many people expected him to become as great as he did. Hughes I'm kind of expecting the reincarnation of Pat Lafontaine/Paul Kariya or something like that.
There's no reason not to think that Kakko can't come out of the gate swinging next year. I expect he can do at least as well as Svechnikov, Brady Tkachuk and Kotkaniemi did last year.
