People saying Hughes is a generational player but will need a couple seasons to adjust?

Just kind of odd, no? Wasn't the case with Sid, Ovechkin and McDavid.

I don't like to hear that about a generational player.

Still expect Devils to take him.
I have never thought Hughes to be a generational player. I always thought he'd be more of a Matthews or Tavares than a McDavid or Crosby. Not stylistically, just in terms of overall production. Although he could turn into a McKinnon, too, where after growing and adjusting over a couple seasons he absolutely explodes.

Either way, I've never considered him a generational guy. One of those guys who could score 1000 points and end up in the HOF, but not the truly generational talent.

Hughes isn't generational. The word "generational" is thrown around almost annually these days.

Generational: McDavid, Crosby and Karlsson (among D-men he's generational to me)
Franchise: Ovechkin, Matthews, Doughty, MacKinnon, Eichel and a few others

I would rank Hughes and Kakko in the franchise tier myself.

Id consider Ovechkin as Generational but that's just imo

He is absolutely a generational goal scorer. He's one of the top goal scorers to ever play the game.

Whether someone believes that's enough to be a generational player overall is a different argument.

Watching Kakko in this tournament, it looks like he's out to prove something. Truly a beast out there.

The Rangers win either way.

If the Devils go Hughes, the Rangers take a force of a player who's ready to step into the league and dominate right away. He very well could even be better than expected.

If Devils go Kakko, then the story will be about how Hughes was passed up at #1 every time they line up and how Hughes will be out to prove the Devils that they made a mistake. More motivation for a consensus #1 pick - who's a more of a natural center than Kakko.

If he needs time to adjust, he's not generational. Generational means you are among the absolute best players in the game from the moment you enter the league as a rookie and throughout your career. So Crosby, Ovechkin, McDavid(on track) and Malkin is a borderline case. That is all.

I said this other day, would love to have an elite young player with a chip on his shoulder who truly hates the Devils haha

People who use this word often don't understand what it means. I think Matthews and Eichel were better prospects than Hughes and I don't think either of them are generational.

Ovechkin has a chance to break Wayne Gretzky's goal record....if that's not generational...what is?

Hughes is not a generational player. There have like 20-25 in NHL history, and he ain’t going to be one of them.

If the Rangers take him, he has the potential to be the best player in franchise history. Still won’t make him generational unless he wins multiple Cups, multiple Harts, multiple Rosses - as in three or four or more.

Imagine how horrid it would be for the Devils if they pass on Hughes and Kakko is a bust and Hughes goes on to be a Hart generational center and reminds the Devils they passed on him every time we play them.

That would be franchise suicide.

Hughes will be rightly upset if he isn't selected first, but he'll also send Shero a fruit basket for reprieving him from playing in New Jersey.

Neither guy is a generational talent and I can't think of any trusted observer who would use those terms to describe either Kakko or Hughes at this point.

If they somehow reached that level, awesome. But that's not what the expectation is, or should be.
